In series with this junction, there is of= course the junction at the main gang connection which connects the long li= nk to each cartridge. Performance of the MTP connections for each cartridg= e varies as seen in the attached plot from David Nidever. The plot shows that for MTP5, starting at about MJD 58000, the peak through= put for MTP5 across all carts dropped by about 20%. This reflects the addi= tion of the extra junction to recover from the rodent damage. Ideally, eac= h fiber in each MTP connection will make fiber-fiber contact. But we don't= think fiber-fiber contact is achieved in most of our connections. (We hop= e that improved polishing methods combined with spring replacements during = upcoming retermination will help.) Without physical contact, the tip of ea= ch uncoated fiber will suffer Fresnel losses of about 3.5%. Thus the two f= iber tips will together cause about 7% reflection losses at any given conne= ction. The liquid, which has a refractive index close to that of the fiber = core, is meant to fill the air gap between fiber tips and ideally eliminate= the reflection losses. So we will need to observe for a few weeks to collect sufficient throughput= data across enough carts to see if the throughput "ceiling" increases abov= e 80% for MTP5.
