Subject: 2.5m obslog 20211027 (SJD 59515) From: dgatlin@apo.nmsu.edu Date: Thu, 28 Oct 2021 11:49:32 +0000 (UTC) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday October 27, 2021 (SJD 59515) ---- Observing Team ---- Dylan Gatlin Audrey Oravetz (R) Aidan Gray (R) ---- Observing Plan ---- FSC tests ---- Observing Summary ---- We were closed most of the night, but opened twice for FSC tests. Notes: - There was a lot of parts and cardboard boxes in the enclosure today. I tried to weigh down the cardboard, but some of it blew around in the wind. As far as I could tell, all the important stuff hadn't moved, but I can't be sure. - The manipulator arm was blowing around in the wind, and at one point blew itself completely to its leftward limit. I tied it town with a ratchet strap. ---- Observing Log ---- Started afternoon APOGEE cals, including a 30-read FPI Took a BOSS bias and dark Primary A/C were out of spec for the mirror numbers, the rest were in spec 23:25Z Started ventilation, high wind Ready to open, some high wind 02:34Z opened 03:29Z On field using the command tcc track/pterr 270, 70 obs /rotty=obj /rota=0 /magRange=(12,13) At 270, 70, we had a pointing error of ~+3.3s in RA and -19.6" in Dec Optimal focus was at 483 04:21Z Closed due to wind gusts over 40mph 08:53Z Restarted ventilation as wind started to die down Slew to 270, 70 again We took a set of data where we slewed the telescope rotator to 0 and 180, and did equivalent rotations in the FSC's axis to find the center of the axis of rotation. After completing this test twice with consistent results, we realized that we were using the spectro instrument in tcc, not the fsccam. We switched instruments and reran the test after refocusing. Focus for the fsccam instrument was ~100 lower than with spectro. We were done with our tests, and tried find a star off-center in the FSC. When the FSC moves off-center, the camera rotates, so we ended up getting confused and had a hard time keeping track of our coordinates. We also noticed that once we got back to center, +RA points to the left like you'd expect, but +Dec points down in the FSC camera. This confused us enough that we closed up the telescope at 11:45Z. We discussed a plan for tomorrow, the day staff will improve the alignment of the axis of rotation of the FSC, and we will build a plan to track stars off-center in the FSC. ---- Mirror Numbers ---- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A: -0.1340 0.0040 Axial B: 0.0000 0.0310 Axial C: -0.1870 -0.1180 Trans D: -0.0450 -0.0362 Lateral E: 0.3315 0.3315 Lateral F: 0.5345 0.5340 GALILS Commanded: 14350 -2550 4400 50700 -8800 -8400 Actual: 14350 -2550 4400 50700 -8800 -8400 SETMIR VALUES PrimDesOrient: 0.0 -59.3 -8.75 -512.73 1906.51 PrimOrient: 0.01 -59.26 -8.77 -512.68 1906.6 SECONDARY: ---------- Focus: 0.0000 Air temp: 5.39 Altitude: 29.999980622851602 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A: -9.4410 -9.4440 Axial B: -9.4690 -9.4730 Axial C: -9.4960 -9.5010 Trans D: 0.0960 0.1000 GALILS Commanded: 4637050 4636150 4655400 -50 -3450 Actual: 4607287 4607369 4607187 -50 -3450 SETMIR VALUES SecDesOrient: 3657.0 0.0 0.0 0.0 42.22 SecOrient: 3657.03 0.05 0.01 0.01 42.65 ---- Telescope Status ---- 23:20Z Started ventilation 02:45:14 encl25m : open; 04:18:14 encl25m : closed; 09:01:15 encl25m : open; 11:34:15 encl25m : closed; No interlocks bypassed Status at: 1:48:59Z Telescope stowed at: 121.0, 30.0, -0.0 mount Instrument mounted: 19 Counterweights at: 557.6, 559.3, 577.3, 577.0 LN2 autofill systems: Connected and turned on 180L LN2 dewar scale: SP1 205.0 lbs, 18.7 psi ---- Software Used ---- Get Versions, 10/27/21, 22:29:22 -- STUI software: STUI : 1.7.13 alerts : 2.1.6 apo : FAILED boss : 6.0.1-alpha.0 -boss.specMec : 3.0.4 guider : 4.0.0 ecamera : FAILED fliswarm : FAILED hartmann : 2.0.0 hub : 5.0.0a0 mcp : 2.1 -mcp.plc : 34 -mcp.azFiduci : v1_147 -mcp.altFiduc : v1_147 -mcp.rotFiduc : v1_147 sop : 0.1.0-alpha.0 tcc : 1.4.0 apogee : not availble apogeecal : not availble apogeeql : v1_7_0dev STUIAdditions : 3.1.9 -- done --
