But since all the machines have access to the same accounts and data, I think you should be able to run the procedure (or at least the parts that require IDL) on that machine. You can do that either with the observer account (I think preferred) or the sdss5 account. As a reminder, different virtual machines all have the same users and access to /home and /data but may have different software installed (although the base image is the same). VMs are more relevant in terms of what is *running* on them than with respect to what one can *do* on them. - sdss5-hub has emacs installed and I've also installed it on sdss5-bhm. - The tccdata directory is now at /home/sdss5/software/tccdata/master, which is a git repository with the idea that changes to it are committed to GitHub. Conor can provide more comments on that. Again, the tccdata directory is accessible and writable from any machine either as the sdss5, observer, or personal observer accounts. - If DS9 is important, maybe we can spin a dedicated VM for the observers to use and install software on it. We have some free CPUs, I think, and maybe Shane has already done this. I think an sdss5-observer with a couple cores may be a good idea and there you can install X11 software. That can also be used for observer scripts or anything else the observers want to run. I would prefer to keep the production machines free of windowed software. But since all the machines have access to the same accounts an= d data, I think you should be able to run the procedure (or at least the pa= rts that require IDL) on that machine. You can do that either with the obse= rver account (I think preferred) or the sdss5 account. As a reminder, diffe= rent virtual machines all have the same users and access to /home and =C2= =A0/data but may have different software installed (although the base image= is the same). VMs are more relevant in terms of what is *running* on them = than with respect to what one can *do* on them.- sdss5-hub has emacs installed and I've also ins= talled it on sdss5-bhm.- = The tccdata directory is now at=C2=A0/home/sdss5/software/tccdata/master, w= hich is a git repository with the idea that changes to it are committed to = GitHub. Conor can provide more comments on that. Again, the tccdata directo= ry is accessible and writable from any machine either as the sdss5, observe= r, or personal observer accounts.- If DS9 is important, maybe we can spin a dedicated V= M for the observers to use and install software on it. We have some free CP= Us, I think, and maybe Shane has already done this. I think an sdss5-observ= er with a couple cores may be a good idea and there you can install X11 sof= tware. That can also be used for observer scripts or anything else the obse= rvers want to run. I would prefer to keep the production machines free of w= indowed software.Thanks,Jos=C3=A9 On Oct 19, 2021 at= 03:02:50, asimmons@apo.nmsu.edu wrote: =20 =C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0= =C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0APACHE PO= INT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M =C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2= =A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0= =C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2= =A0OBSERVING LOG =C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0= =C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2= =A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0Monday October 18, 2021 =C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2= =A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0= =C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2= =A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0(SJD 59506)---- =C2=A0Observing Team ---= -Audrey OravetzViktor Malanushenko (R)---- Observin= g Plan ----APOGEE MTP mapping continuationInstrument block and = short pointing model with engineering camera---- Observing Summ= ary ----The first half of the night involved completing an updated = mapping of the MTP fibers with locations on the APOGEE CCDs.The= second half of the night, we went through the motions of the instrument bl= ock procedure and a 20 pt pointing model to test the engineering tasks = with the new sdss5 servers. **None of what we did was actually implemen= ted**.Here is what we need help with in order to update the instrum= ent block on sdss5-hub:** We need access to emacs, and IDL on s= dss5-hub.
