Subject: 2.5m obslog 20200601 (SJD 59002) From: kpan@apo.nmsu.edu Date: Tue, 2 Jun 2020 11:25:56 +0000 (UTC) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday June 01, 2020 (SJD 59002) ---- Observing Team ---- Kaike Pan Dan Oravetz ---- Observing Plan ---- Update engCam instrument block, then take a new pointing model ---- Observing Summary ---- The sky was clear for most hours of the nights, but we did close for one hour due to nearby radar and thick clouds. The seeing was between 1.0 to 1.5". We updated the instrument block with a set of grid data and a set of ring data. Completed a new pointing model. Notes: 1. I could not make new fiducial table effective due to the MCP global memory and the message queues were deleted although the processes were all running (after MCP rebooted via power cycling the crate). 2. Although all three conditions, west door position, the telescope position (121/5/0), the hatch door, were double checked and confirmed at right positions, the building enable LED didn't light up. We bypassed it to open. 3. We had a communication issue in getting mirror numbers (see log). ---- Observing Log ---- Afternoon: ========== Reduced the fiducial data and install the new tables as v1_142. When try to make the table be effective on mcp, you had an error of no such files. It tracking down to the problem: the global memory and the message queues were deleted. Likely from mcp rebooting via power cycling the mcp crate. Homed M1, relaxed three times. Homed M2. setup the engCam, homed the stage. Take boss bias and dark. Since the engCam is on, no cal data tonight. Guider dark looks fine. APOGEE evening cal looks fine and dither mechanism work properly. disk space is fine. Please contact the server administrator, root@localhost and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log. == 01:01Z: started ventilation. 02:15Z: open enclosure. When open, the building enable LED would not light-up. We double checked the telescope is at the correction position: 121/5/0, the hatch door is fully closed. The west and east door was fully up. So we bypass the building to open. 02:55: took another dark. frame 03: 30 sec flat. Count at 21K. The camera is very dirty. frame 04: 50 sec flat. frame 05: 60 sec flat: frame 06: 55 sec flat. Count 40K. focus the engCam: started ring data for the instrument block. Frame 29. Grid data started at frame 29. ring data started at frame 159. 04:50Z: close for nearby radar and thick clouds. Instrument fitting looks reasonable. iim_scale (-16742.16687.9) ==> (16738.1,16684.0) Rot_inst_ang -89.76 --> -90.06 Rot_inst_xy: (-0.005350, 0.001900) ==> (-0.004590, 0.001885) We also used IDL code, converted by Dmitry, to fit the date. Here are comparison. Igor IDL code iim_scale: -16738.1 16684.0 16738.0 16683.8 rot_inst_ang: -90.06 -90.06 rot_Inst_XY: -0.004590 0.001885 -0.004595 0.001873 As one can see, results are very much the same. Dmitry's code is more convenient for use. I would like to convert the fitting code to python which may give us more flexibility in data file format so that we can just copy the data from STUI log. 05:30Z: re-open. 05:50Z: set the focus to -240. The seeing is about 1.4" (but we saw 1.0" measurements later on). 06:50Z: started pointing model data collection. The first frame is 179. started the data collection for the pointing model. We using the grid: Grid25-87P132 (132 stars), mag range from 8.4 to 9.9, number of exposures = 2, exp time = 2 (but keep change during the first hours due to clouds), settling time =3 sec. Rot type = Obj. We used attended mode so we can retry missed stars due to clouds. During the pointing model data collection, we had a strange error as below: 08:54:49 OBSERVER.kpan 444 tcc f text="Could not start the slew: Could not compute a slew for axes: rot; initializing all axes" 08:54:49 CmdDone: OBSERVER.kpan 444 tcc track 179.9200000, 66.6900000 obs/pterr /rottype=Object/rotang=0/magRange=(8.4, 9.9) But retry worked fine. 10:15Z: data collection completed.
