The trouble with the lossy fiber appears to be the fiber itself.  =
Unplugging it from the light source, there is clearly light at the =
source and the power LED is on indicating power going to the light =
source.
On the other hand, I don't have a good feel for how much visible light =
the lossy fiber should be losing.  I would guess that its fairly dim so =
as to avoid overwhelming the cameras.  Shining a bright flashlight down =
it, I don't see any illumination in the slit end.=
