Subject: 2.5m obslog 20170608 (SJD 57913) From: kpan@apo.nmsu.edu Date: Fri, 9 Jun 2017 11:47:50 +0000 (UTC) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday June 08, 2017 (SJD 57913) ---- Observing Team ---- Elena Malanushenko Kaike Pan Dmitry Bizyaev (star-in-fiber test) Jose Sanchez-Gallego (engineering tasks: guider ect). ---- Observing Plan ---- Fri 9 JUN 2017 57914.0 1.00 02:51 11:15 13:03 21:27 Both APOGEE-2 ( 8.4 h) ---- Observing Summary ---- 3.1 hours (APOGEE/engineering) was lost to clouds. After we open, we tested recent fixes on software, then observed two APOGEE-led plates. APOGEE: ===== cart 6, plate 9980, field 030+60. SOGTF. 4XAB/BA for APOGEE and 4XC for MaNGA. due to an issue on new sopActor and threatening weather, we didn't get dome flat on the plate. cart 2, plate 9978, field 049-06. Dec offset: 20". 5XAB/BA. MF: [38, 57, 198, 259, 277], FF: 70. 5XC for MaNGA. Note to developers and engineers: ================================= 1. Both hubWatch and DOS were running during afternoon, but MaNGA data weren't reduced. hubWatch seems didn't detected new data on red cameras. So we restarted both hubWatch and DOS. 2. APOGEE dither mechanism seems lost communication. Both dither and shutter showed status of "off". "apogee dither init" recovered the communication. 3. We are running test version of SOP, guider, gcamera, hartmann, mcp, platedb. After we open we found the guider applied corrections with wrong sign. Jose traced back the issue to the phi output by platedb actor and patched a temporary fix, and plans to have a fix and test tomorrow. See log body for details. 4. We have new version of stageManager, before it is tagged, here is a temporary procedure to restart actors (see log body for more details). setup "actor_to_restart" git stageManager "actor_to_restart" stop setup "actor_to_restart" "version_to_use" stageManager "actor_to_restart" start 5. "goto Gang Change" didn't take Dome flat and we were forced to close due to threatening weather. Jose had a fix on the issue. We will test it when we open again. Yes, we confirmed it was fixed when you opened for last 2 hours again. 6. We accumulated 4K dust-hours. ---- Observing Log ---- ============================================================================ AFTERNOON CHECKOUT ============================================================================ All systems alive and responsive. I ran new test version of STUI,1.7.1b7 from my user account on sdss-obs2. 00:32:43 -- APOGEE: Evening Cals STUI crashed at 00:35. Reopened. By the time of the restarting, Apogee proceeded to the end of the first dark. So, I have re-started Apogee evening calibration, used sop script. we have one extra dark. STUI on the telescope laptop was restarted today because it used lots of memory. DOS was running, but didn't reduce data. hubWatch was also running, but didn't detected new files for new cameras. So we restarted hubWatch and screens for all fours cameras. In the process, we found that the instruction on serversAndSerivce page has a typo on runHubWatch was runhubWatch. We corrected it. Night: ===== Delay with opening because of nearby radar return and clouds. engineering work: 04:03Z enclosure open. 04:25Z gotoField. Star in fibers on gotoField, but centerUp drove stars away. we manually made corrections in the opposite direction (guider says that -10" in Dec will bring stars to centers, we manually applied +10" and see stars in centers). we had couples of stars in fibers, activating axis corrections will gradually drove stars away. So looks like that the guider applied corrections in opposite directions. Called Jose and he went online. we had thick clouds. When we tried to revert the guider actor to the previous version, you ran into problem: we could not stopped the running guider, could nor restart the guider actor with the previous version. Here is what Jose found: Brian wrote a replacement that i in the actorcore/git version, which is the one we are running for testing. The new version of stageManager can stop actors started with the old version, but not the other way around. If you need to restart an actor, until we tag, please do setup "actor_to_restart" git stageManager "actor_to_restart" stop setup "actor_to_restart" "version_to_use" stageManager "actor_to_restart" start Regarding guider corrections are in the opposite directions, Jose also has an explanation for: Whe you load a cart one of the things that platedbActor outputs is phi, the angle that the guide probe pin to the sky. That calculation is performed in sdss_python_module (in particular, in the plPlugMapM code). For LCO, the x/yfocal of the plate decrease with RA/Dec, the oposite as for plates for APO. As a result, we had to add 180 degrees to phi to keep the same angle convention. During the workshop, we merged the lco branch of sdss_python_module to trunk because Nathan needed some changes there for his new version of the autoscheduler. I missed that the LCO calculation for phi would cause problem at APO, it basically tells the guider that the gprobes are rotated 180 degrees. We need to find a better solution for this, so probably I’ll get something to test tomorrow, but for now I’ll make sure that if somebody restarts platedbActor the tagged verson of sdss_python_module, which has the correct calculation for phi, is used.
