Subject: 2.5m obslog 20150904 (SJD 57270) From: dmbiz@apo.nmsu.edu Date: Sat, 5 Sep 2015 11:41:03 +0000 (UTC) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday September 04, 2015 (SJD 57270) ---- Observing Team ---- Katie Grabowski Dmitry Bizyaev ---- Observing Summary ---- The night was lost to rain, radar returns, and clouds. Attempted to declare MANGA evening test calib exposures (an arc and a flat) as "test" and received python errors, see "problem in detail" section. Communicated with Brian C. Evening APOGEE calibration did not have any signal in the first 5 images (including flats and arcs), and then got stuck in the middle of an exposure. Exposures resumed, calibrations done again, Nathan informed. ---- Observing Plan ---- Fri 4 SEP 2015 57270.0 0.57 02:35 12:06 18:27 03:59 ---- MaNGA until 05:58 ( 3.4 h), then APOGEE-2 ( 6.1 h) ---- Observing Log ---- Afternoon: ========= All systems alive and responsive. Started APOGEE evening calibrations, gathered guider dark, etc. 23:55:24 boss exposure 4.0, file=203694, C 23:56:35 boss exposure 4.0, file=203695, C 23:58:01 sp1.motor.move= -294, -299, -293 23:58:04 sp2.motor.move= -916, -915, -914 23:58:10 Hartmann collimate output on cart #1 sp1: offset: r= -329 (In Focus); b= 0.8 (In Focus) sp2: offset: r= -631 (In Focus); b= 3.8 (In Focus) sp1: pred. move: spAverageMove= -293 sp2: pred. move: spAverageMove= -914 sp1: pred. spResiduals: r= -36, b= -0.1, txt= OK, spTemp = 14.9 sp2: pred. spResiduals: r= 283, b= 0.9, txt= OK, spTemp = 27.9 ---------- motorPosition sp1: 25973, 26266, 26004; sp2: 23577, 23099, 23796; ---------- Median spectrographs temperatures: Tsp1= 14.9, Tsp2= 28.3; Outside air temperature= 15.7; ---------- We will delay opening due to approaching radar. APOGEE evening calibrations got stuck at the first UNe, 33rd SUTR. After observing it hanged for some time, we took 3 SUTR test exposure. It updated the counter to +3. Then did it again two times. After the counter reached 40, it started working normally. Calibrations resumed, frames look as it should be. Inspection shows that all evening cal frames taken before to-be-with-sognal: flats and arcs, are all darks. We did the calibrations again. In the process of taking cold shutter was not opened manually, so accidentally we got some extra darks. No any time was lost due to the bad weather on site. Nathan was informed about the empty frames. He also suggested to call Matt Nelson if the problem continues or repeats itself. We ensured that the headers of the calibration files look consistent with the previous nights, that the signal is in spec in the frames, and decided not to call Matt until something suspicious will happen. Night ===== Ventilation postponed because of radar returns around the site. The first half of the night was with nearby radar returns and rain sprinkles. Closer to the morning it was just cloudy. 11:35Z A & B calibs started. ---- Telescope Status ---- We did not open.
