Subject: 2.5m obslog 20140701 (MJD 56840) From: doravetz@apo.nmsu.edu Date: Wed, 2 Jul 2014 10:07:06 +0000 (UTC) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday July 01, 2014 (MJD 56840) ---- Observing Team ---- Karen Kinemuchi Dan Oravetz John Parejko MaNGA: Renbin, Kai, Jose APOGEE-2: Nathan ---- Observing Plan ---- Tue 1 JUL 2014 56840.0 eBOSS until 07:50, then MaNGA ---- Observing Summary ---- Night was lost to thunderstorms. John P. modified SOP, Guider, and PlateDB such that all are using an ampersand character for survey delimiter; e.g., PLATETYP='APOGEE-2&MaNGA'. New versions are SOP v2_3, PlateDB v2_1, Guider v2_1. This is related to Ticket #1928. After John P.'s delimiter modification, we were successfully able to load cart. 2, 7815 (APOGEE-2&MaNGA) via SOP 'Load Cartridge', but we still had a problem trying to take MaNGA cals via SOP. See Log for details. We tested loading the eBOSS plate (cart. 10) and the APOGEE-2 plate (cart. 9) and they loaded OK and the SOP window displayed properly for these survey plates. DoS was not processing calib frames because the SRVYMODE header keyword was set as 'None'. Jose manually updated the plate info so that SRVYMODE='MaNGA' and then DoS saw the calib frames properly. We tested the behavior of the APOGEE shutter with the gang connector plugged into cart. 2 when MaNGA cals were queued and the APOGEE shutter does in fact close before MaNGA cals execute. Details in Log. Goto Field + Hartmanns + Calibs (no Slew, no Guider) failed after the Hartmanns, even though the Hartmanns (and the analysis, collimator motor moves, etc.) completed normally. We suspect it may be a STUI-version issue, because it worked for STUI 1.4.1b3. See Log for details. Related to the above Goto Field + Hartmanns + Calibs (no Slew, no Guider), when it DID work using STUI 1.4.1b3, the progress status of Calibs changed to 'Done' after the Hartmanns finished, even though cals hadn't started yet. The sp2 slithead latch was reporting 'unlatched' after it had seemingly latched fine. Details in afternoon section of Log. Can someone check the sp2 slithead latch? Jon B., can you please install STUI 1.4.1b3 on Landru? ---- Observing Log ---- AFTERNOON CHECKOUT: 23:04Z Tried to load the MaNGA Cart #2 under both STUI 1.4.1b3 and 1.4,and we were unable to load the cart. Resuming normal afternoon checkout procedures.... 23:12Z Ran APOGEE short dark - ok; started APOGEE evening cals; grabbed mirror numbers - ok; platedb checked; actors tested; gcamera/guider prep - done. 23:58Z Loaded cartridge 11 for collimation. SP2 slithead latch had some trouble latching and in the MCP window, it is shown as "unlatched". Unlatched the cartridge and relatched a couple of times and SP2 slithead latch finally connected. 00:22Z Took BOSS bias and short dark -ok. Took BOSS arc and flat. 01:33Z Cart bay checked and ready. 01:43Z Delaying ventilation due to nearby thunderstorm. NIGHT ===== We did not open because of thunderstorms. We were unable to load cart. 2, 7815 via SOP 'Load Cartridge'. The problem was traced to a semi-colon being used as a delimiter; "semi-colon is used by the hub and STUI to separate keywords, but that's what platedb outputs to separate survey types for multiple survey plates." Related discussion can be found in Ticket #1928. John P. updated SOP, Guider, and PlateDB to use an ampersand character as the delimiter to replace the semi-colon and then we were able to load the cartridge via SOP 'Load Cartridge.' We tested loading cart. 10 (eBOSS) and cart. 9 (APOGEE-2) and they both loaded fine. The SOP window displayed for each one was correct for the given survey. APOGEE shutter test with BOSS calibs ************************************ Does the APOGEE shutter in fact close when BOSS cals are taken? Cart. 2, 7815 was mounted and the APOGEE gang connector was connected to the cartridge. We manually toggled the APOGEE shutter open, then took a BOSS bias, and verified that the APOGEE shutter closed before the bias started. Next we queued a 1s flat and tried the same thing; with the APOGEE shutter open and the BOSS flat queued the APOGEE shutter closed prior to the 1s BOSS flat. We did the same thing for an arc, and the APOGEE shutter again closed prior to the arc begin taken. MaNGA cals problem with SOP *************************** We had a problem trying to take MaNGA cals via SOP. We tried a quick Hartmann sequence and a set of cals via Cmd='gotoField noslew nohartmann noguider arcTime=4.0 flatTime=30.0 guiderFlatTime=0.5 ', but SOP hung in a 'Running' state and produced the following error message: "This command is not yet supported." We had to restart SOP via stage manager in order to recover. In short, it appears SOP still has some bugs related to the co-observing plates. When we had the 'isManga' SOP bypass set, then Cmd='gotoField noslew nohartmann noguider arcTime=4.0 flatTime=30.0 guiderFlatTime=0.5 ' worked fine, although the status of Calibs changed to 'Done' before the calibs started and right after the Hartmanns finished. 07:19:02 .hub 0 cmds d CmdQueued=1150963,1404285542.08,"APO.karen",138,"sop",12,"gotoField noslew flatTime=30.0 guiderFlatTime=0.5 guiderTime=5.0 arcTime=4.0 noguider" 07:19:02 APO.karen 138 sop e text="This command is not yet supported." Goto Field failure after Hartmanns ********************************** Goto Field + Hartmann + Calibs (no Slew, no Guider) failed after the Hartmanns, even though the Hartmanns (and the analysis, collimator motor moves, etc.) completed normally. This happened to Karen running STUI 1.4.0 with the 'isManga' bypass enabled. When I ran the same command with STUI 1.4.1b3 and with the same 'isManga' bypass enabled, it ran properly, so we suspect it may have been a STUI-version-related issue.
