With Dan Long on site the problem was traced to malfunctioning magneto-strictive device, as well as bad replacement to it. THE TELESCOPE DID NOT OBSERVE TONIGHT because of the problem. The weather conditions were marginal for opening in the first half of the night. Spectro monthly checkout: flats, darks, and biases, were done tonight. ---- Observing Log ---- ============================================================================ AFTERNOON CHECKOUT ============================================================================ 23:30Z Start evening checkouts %... We stopped it at 126 degrees by pushing the stop button. Then we released the stop button and re-clicked "axis init": the telescope started to drift again. Looked a constant speed. Tried again after power cycling the AZ amplifiers. We tried to clear the axis from the MCP and did not produce any result. We called Dan Long who suggested to restart de MCP. It did not solve the situation. We also tried to release AZ break (in the lower enclosure) and push the telescope by hand because we thought it reached the maximum angle allowed in the enclosure, but we were not able to move the telescope (the azimuth brake was manually switched off). Dan was contacted, he checked and found that the encoders were working during our manual push, so need closer look at the situation. Dan came on site. ============================================================================ NIGHT ============================================================================ Opening delayed due to radar returns around. At the same time, we had problems with clearing the AZ axis, see above. After power cycling AZ amplifiers and restarting MCP, we hit the limit AZ-at-stow-in the enclosure, ~ 130 deg. Called Dan Long, he came on site. The problem was traced to the wind baffle that pushed telescope in one the same direction every time the axis init was issued. In turn, it happened because of wrong functioning of the AZ magneto-strictive device. Dan found a replacement for the magneto-strictive device, but it did not let to move the telescope/baffle at all. We experimented with the ALT device (not touching its alignment), checked cable - connector to the device, and even tested the wiring between the wind baffle power supply box and the magneto-strictive device. Everything looks working properly instead of both devices. The old one supplied a constant, non-zero voltage, irrespective to the position of the magnet (it explains why the telescope moved AZ axis constantly). The spare one issued zero voltage all the time. At ~ 7Z Dan suggested to call it a night. Note that although the sky is mostly clear, it would be risky to open, at least all the time from the beginning of the night, because of radar returns around. Spectro monthly checkout: flats, darks, and biases were done. 9:56Z scheduler started. A & B calibs started. ---- Spectroscopy Data Summary ---- Reading FITS from /data/spectro/56827/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - n time filename cart plt flav initialized. Any problem with communications, mcp, and amplifiers was ruled out. After a little digging it was found that the windbaffle was pushing the telescope around in azimuth. If the magnetostrictive device was disconnected the windbaffle would not move and the telescope azimuth would initialize and move fine within the constraints of the windbaffle. The spare magnetostrictive device was installed, but unfortunately the windbaffle would not move. The reading from it was always zero. Cables were rung out and swapped between altitude and azimuth but with always the same result. Even plugging the device directly into the windbaffle control box didn’t change the fact that the new device always read zero regardless of the slider position, and the old one always read -7.6V no matter where the slider was. Plugging them into the altitude A/D resulted in the same behavior, so it wasn’t the A/D. So it appears the azimuth device died and the spare was DOA. More investigation will continue tomorrow, as will fast tracking the acquisition of another magnetostrictive device. For tonight the telescope is off line. -Dan Long
