Note to engineers and APOGEE team: 1. We had a problem on the mushroom valve on the top of the 180L dewar side by SP1. The valve could not be closed after a secondary fill at sunset (see log body). We planned to swapped out the dewar, but there was no dewar in the shield. So we just let Joe and Dan know that 10L dewar need to be filled, and they agreed to take care of it. It is BOSS time, we start the first science exposure at 01:55, 10 minute before 15 degree twilight, So we can claim that no time was lost to the problem. However, due to the BOSS plate gap, we planned to start with a APOGEE plate, and APOGEE science could start at 01:35Z, so we could say 20 minutes was lost to the problem. 2. The altitude axes went over to 90:03 when a stop button is engaged during a cartridge change, at ~11:00Z. The axes went back to 90:00 after the E-stop was pulled out without any other action, then we put in the altitude pin, engaged a E-STOP again. The axes went to 09:02. But gotoField worked fine after the cartridge change. 3. First APOGEE science exposure issue: We have noticed that APOGEE quicklook reports much lower S/N on the first science exposure on APOGEE plates, usually 1/2 to 3/2 of others, and have reported this in the night log multiple times. Inspired by the discussed on today's opts phonecon: that light could be trapped in the APOGEE cold shutter if it is exposed to bright light. Because the gang connector will be exposed to light due to turning-on FF lamps (for guider flat) and/or switching the gang connector from podium to cart, it is possible trapped light is the cause of lower S/N on the first exposure. We compare the first science exposure on the first APOGEE cart, frame apRaw-0998002, to the 2nd and 3rd one: frame apRaw-09980023 and 24. We found that the first exposure have different background than the 2nd and 3rd whereas later two are similar. Then on the next cart, we take a 3-read dark before starting science but after the guider flat, we found the background on the first science exposure: apRaw-09980036, is the similar with those of the 2nd and 3rd one, 0037 and 0038, and that quicklook reported S/N of 27, 25, 25 on them. So we continue to take the short dark before science exposures for tonight. APOGEE team, please check the data and let us know if a short dark is necessary. ---- Observing Log ---- Afternoon ----------- Checked STUI actors, Cleaned APOGEE gang connector, took APOGEE evening cals, verified APOGEE archiving, Took BOSS bias, dark, collimate. B2 +4 degrees while R2 is in focus. Within +/- 2 degrees are okay. Took guider dark sequence. Checked mirror numbers, 00:10 started ventilation Checked upper and lower telescope enclosure, fiducials, balance Cart 6 is mounted Night: ==== 00:38Z loadCart: ct=6, pl=5525, sd=A; 01:05Z: enclosure open. 01:20Z: After filled 10L dewar, the mushroom valve on 180L dewar on SP1 side cannot be closed. The valve could be turned 1/4 turn to open it wider but could not be turned to close it (It would not turn at all at this direction). We attempted to close the valve right after the fill was done, no any sign of frozen was seen around the valve. Anyway, I did clean all "fog" stuff around the valve but still not be turned at all. Joe was called and he came on side, used a heat gun to warm the valve up. At the mean time, the depressure valve was open to de-pressure the 180L dewar. After about 8 minutes or so, the pressure went down to 3 PSI, and Joe was able to move the valve by using a wrench. So looks like that the valve may be frozen from inside. cartchange calibs: 01:17:48 apogee.expose=apRaw-09980011, 10, A, Dark 01:19:35 apogee.expose=apRaw-09980012, 10, A, Dark 01:45Z gotoField.
