Subject: 2.5m obslog 20130523 (MJD 56436) From: doravetz@apo.nmsu.edu Date: Fri, 24 May 2013 09:45:36 +0000 (UTC) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday May 23, 2013 (MJD 56436) ---- Observing Team ---- Howard J brewington Dan Oravetz Joe Huehnerhoff (support) ---- Observing Plan ---- 23 May 2013 56436.0 APOGEE 7.9 hours Flexible Engineering ---- Observing Summary ---- Mostly cloudy throughout the night. John P. and Paul worked on some gcameraICC/guider issues during the evening and while we were closed. We experienced a hardware problem with the FF controller box that seems to suggest there's a short. In its current state, two FF petals will not cycle open/closed and every time an attempt is made to cycle them, we blow the associated fuse on the controller box. Joe spent over an hour trying to get things working for us, but it's going to require day time troubleshooting. We tried to operate with the FF petals bypassed in SOP, but in combination with the clouds we were unsuccessful in getting any useful data, even though we did manage an AB sequence on cart. 5, 6843, 015+30_A (which is probably not good). See the Log body for details describing the problems we encountered trying to operate in the ffs-bypassed state. We had another incident this afternoon, during checkout, that the Alt axis would not move although it cleared without problem and mcp was pingable. Joe was called. He had to reboot the mcp. We're not sure if today's problem was related to the alt failure from yesterday. ---- Observing Log ---- Afternoon: ---------- 23:00Z Started the afternoon checkout. After opening we began to top off the BOSS spectrographs with LN2 and Howard noticed on his way back to the control room that half of the FF petals were open and the other half were closed. We tried to cycle the FF petals and the four that were closed (07:30-12:00 positions when facing the front at stow) remained closed while the other four cycled appropriately. Suspecting the problem may be related to the work done a couple days ago on the FF controller box, we called Joe and he arrived on site to investigate. He checked the relays and the fuses and noticed that two fuses were blown. After swapping the fuses we regained movement in the 07:30 and 09:00 petals, but the 10:30 and 12:00 petals still did not move. The replacement fuse associated with those petals had blown again. After blowing two or three more fuses it was determined that there is likely a short in the FF controller box that will require day time investigation. After discussion with Joe it was determined that we could try to operate with the FF petals bypassed in SOP, otherwise we were done for the night until the day crew could fix the FF controller box tomorrow during the day. We tried to operate with the FF petals bypassed in SOP with cartridges 5 and 6. We first tried with the two stationary petals in the closed position. We slewed to the field and the took the guider flat, but after the guider flat when SOP commands the petals open, they did not stay open. The six petals that move would initially open, but would not stay in the open position even though the FF petals were bypassed in SOP. We tried to open the petals manually with the FF bypass pendant and while that did open the six petals we wanted open, the guider turned off. We were unable to keep the guider running while the FF petal bypass was in use. We tried to take an AB sequence on cartridge 5 with six petals open, but we did not have the guider running and there were clouds. When we manually opened the two problematic FF petals and tried to run leaving them in the open position with cartridge 6 the guider flat did not look good for half the plate and we couldn't see guide stars in the fibers associated with the dark half of the plate. And with the clouds thickening, we had difficulty with guide stars in the bright half of the plate, so we closed. 09:11Z - Closed. 09:17Z - Started APOGEE morning cals. 09:44Z - Started BOSS biases and dark. ---- Weather Log ---- Wind 1 um DIMM IRSC Time Temp C Dewp C MPH Dir Dust fwhm mean sigma 18:00 21.0 -2.7 17.6 191.6 1253 18:15 20.1 -3.7 12.1 209.6 1241 18:30 22.9 -1.9 21.7 218.9 1140 18:45 21.8 -1.5 22.2 181.9 1214 19:00 21.8 -1.3 16.3 203.7 1379 19:15 23.0 -1.6 13.8 210.1 1227 19:30 21.9 -1.0 14.8 216.0 1273 19:45 21.1 -1.5 16.8 193.3 1243 20:00 21.9 -2.0 17.2 202.3 1263 20:15 24.7 -0.9 16.8 210.1 1230 20:30 23.1 -0.4 17.6 182.8 1276 20:45 24.5 -0.1 14.6 205.3 1314 21:00 23.2 -0.7 26.3 248.1 1834 21:15 22.9 0.3 27.1 225.1 1373 21:30 23.4 0.1 29.6 222.5 2431 21:45 24.8 0.5 28.2 242.7 2432 22:00 26.7 0.2 19.9 214.7 2397 22:15 23.3 0.5 18.5 247.7 2338 22:30 25.9 0.6 21.7 226.7 2055 22:45 21.8 -1.6 23.9 258.0 1936 23:00 22.7 -1.3 20.9 264.0 2398 23:15 21.4 -1.1 21.0 260.8 1853 23:30 21.9 -1.2 12.1 209.7 1975 23:45 21.0 -2.1 15.1 262.6 1790 00:00 20.1 -2.9 20.2 266.6 1778 00:15 20.8 -2.9 11.7 258.1 1612 00:30 20.0 -3.2 9.2 229.6 1613 00:45 20.3 -2.7 10.7 253.8 1472 01:00 20.1 -2.8 15.5 269.0 1479 01:15 18.9 -4.2 16.8 266.6 1381 01:30 18.7 -4.4 15.5 227.7 1476 01:45 18.6 -4.3 16.3 226.2 1719 02:00 15.3 2.3 20.8 141.4 2087 02:15 14.1 2.2 33.3 135.8 3008 02:30 13.6 1.4 20.3 131.1 1492 02:45 13.0 2.0 33.7 130.8 2031 03:00 12.6 2.2 26.8 140.7 3251 03:15 12.2 2.5 23.9 131.6 4176 03:30 12.1 2.6 22.9 137.1 4962 03:45 12.2 2.6 22.2 133.0 4738 04:00 11.8 2.9 19.3 126.5 3829 04:15 11.1 3.2 29.8 125.1 3914 04:30 11.1 2.9 21.1 144.0 2898 04:45 10.9 2.7 24.8 133.3 2197 05:00 10.9 2.8 19.2 136.6 2122 05:15 11.4 2.7 12.2 135.5 2197 05:30 12.6 2.1 16.1 156.3 2437 05:45 12.6 2.3 18.2 166.7 2519 06:00 12.6 1.9 18.4 157.3 2425 06:15 12.6 1.8 15.5 163.3 2317 06:30 12.6 1.9 17.4 176.9 2129 06:45 13.1 1.7 18.1 176.1 2212 07:00 12.7 1.8 19.3 172.4 2355 07:15 12.9 1.7 20.4 167.9 2406 07:30 12.9 1.8 18.3 168.3 2640 07:45 12.3 1.9 12.3 177.3 2597 08:00 11.9 2.3 19.0 137.5 2461 08:15 11.2 2.9 25.1 139.0 2208 08:30 10.8 2.5 22.9 141.0 1686 08:45 10.9 1.9 18.9 147.8 2364 09:00 11.1 1.7 16.3 154.6 3395 09:15 10.7 1.8 17.6 147.9 2938 09:30 11.6 -2.5 17.9 178.8 5400 ---- Telescope Status ---- Status at: 09:43Z Telescope stowed at: 121.0, 30.0, 0.0 mount Instrument mounted: cartridge = 6 Counterweights at: 285 LN2 autofill systems: Connected and turned on 180L LN2 dewar scales: SP1 228.30 lbs, 22.02 psi SP2 222.00 lbs, 20.83 psi ---- Software Used ---- Get Versions, 23:53:10 ----STUI software: STUI: 1.3b7 2013-05-17 alerts: v1_2_1 apo: v1_7 boss: v2_5_13 boss.daq: 1.3.2 boss.specMech: 3.0.1 gcamera: trunk+svn146244M guider: v1_4_5 hub: Tag: sdss3_v1_1_9 mcp: v6_6_16 mcp.plc: 28 mcp.azFiducialVersion: v1_109 mcp.altFiducialVersion: v1_109 mcp.rotFiducialVersion: v1_109 platedb: v1_0_5 sop: trunk+svn146406 sos: v1_2_0 sos.idlspec2d: v5_6_3 tcc: 2.14.0 apogee: ** not availble ** apogeecal: ** not availble ** apogeeql: v1_4_1 -----Other software sdssProcedure(sdss3): v3_06 Scripts : v3_0+trunk -- done -- [observer@sos3 ~]$ spVersion -- Other versions ---- idlspec2d (sos3) --- v5_6_4 plate-mapper3 ------ NOCVS:v5_0_16 ---- Mirror Numbers ---- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A: 5.36 5.362 Axial B: 5.21 5.212 Axial C: 5.512 5.517 Trans D: 10.359 10.353 Lateral E: 10.6299 10.6553 Lateral F: 12.2555 12.2809 GALILS Commanded: 11300 -650 5500 21900 13500 13050 Actual: 11300 -650 5500 21900 13500 13050 SETMIR VALUES PrimDesOrient: 0.00 0.00 0.00 612.35 1500.90 PrimOrient: 0.00 0.00 0.00 612.07 1500.38 SECONDARY: ---------- Focus: 0.00 Air temp: 21.6 Altitude: 30.0 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A: 7.042 7.036 Axial B: 7.056 7.041 Axial C: 7.041 7.031 Trans D: 0.342 0.334 GALILS Commanded: 1576550 1594600 1580000 -3550 -6650 Actual: 1576966 1594622 1579983 -3550 -6650 SETMIR VALUES SecDesOrient: 1257.00 3.00 5.00 0.00 115.81 SecOrient: 1257.10 3.06 4.87 -0.26 116.10
