There is/has been some effort in plate design to deal with this, but certain highly extincted regions are difficult at best. This raises a parallel question of whether we should be looking at an IR guider for APOGEE-2S. Since we are the only ones on the duPont during our 7-8 day campaigns, we could chose any guiding approach desired. Our default position is to use the existing LCO guide camera design (which is optical, of course). Any suggestions on whether IR guiding should be pursued further?
