The telescope was pinned, in 'instrumentChange' position, with the lift/latch controller in Auto mode. The lift was raised and contacted the cartridge with the pendant reading ~1200 for the force. Both the slithead latches and the instrument latches were unlatched successfully without any indication of a problem - the Instrument Latch Controller LEDs indicated that both slithead latches and all three instrument latches were fully disengaged. As the lift was lowered about six inches, the cartridge became stuck, and it appeared that the North (according to the N, S, E, W markings on the cartridge) side of the cartridge slitheads were in contact with the telescope slithead housing. The lift was brought back up in an effort to realign the cartridge, but when the cartridge had become stuck it also tilted slightly, with the N (front) side hanging slightly lower than the S (back) side. Consequently, when the lift plate contacted the cartridge when it was re-raised, the two alignment pins on the lift plate did not engage the corresponding holes on the cartridge. The lift then performed a very quick up/down motion (maybe in an effort to correct the unexpected load condition?), but we could not move the lift up or down thereafter. We loosened the lift plate alignment pins, which allowed the loosened pins to engage their respective holes on the cartridge. We switched the pendant to manual mode and slowly and carefully raised the lift a couple of inches. This allowed the cartridge to properly center itself on the lift plate. We lowered the cartridge and it dismounted smoothly without any indication that the slitheads were contacting the slithead housing. Given that a similar problem happened relatively recently and was due to a misaligned state of the altitude locking pin, we checked the MCP and noted that the altitude was reading 89:59:07. Before mounting the next cartridge we inspected the inside of the slithead housing for both sp1 and sp2, as well as the instrument latches, and did not find anything that would cause an obstruction or which was stuck (e.g., the instrument latches weren't stuck in a particular state). The next cartridge latched normally, but there was some difficulty in removing the altitude locking pin; it took more effort than is typically required. We checked the altitude locking pin housing and it does not appear to be loose. The alignment pins were re-tightened on the lift plate. We lost about 35 minutes to this problem.
