We opened for a few hours and collected data for the pointing model. We hit the limit for the dust accumulation, please check mirrors for dust. The pointing model was unsuccessful, residuals are huge and something is wrong. Also, the corrector lens is exposed to the dust while eng camera is on, so please clean it, too. ---- Observing Log ---- Afternoon: --------- Extremely dusty - about as bad as I've ever seen it. Fritz worked on a network switch in the control room today. 23:00Z - BOSS actor was in a confused state - pingable but not returning collimator info. This was not a controller issue, but the actor itself needed to be restarted from stageManager. 23:325Z - apoActor needed to be restarted. stageManager couldn't stop the running bad process, and a kill -9 had to be used. 23:35Z - APOGEE evening cals started. It was so dusty I did not blow off the fiber ends - I felt it was safest to keep the gang connector seated and protected. Gcamera dark, BOSS bias and dark taken. 00:12Z - MARVELS ThAr lamp on Afternoon checkout at the telescope was without problems. Ventilation delayed due to dust. Engcam remains mounted. MARVELS bias, TIO, ThAr taken - in spec APOGEE calibration frames checked - look normal. Night: ----- The opening delayed because of very high dust counts in the evening (~35,000) and during the night (~15,000). The dust count went down after ~ 5:30Z. We started ventilation at 6:05Z after the dust dropped below 5,000. The plan is to open at least for a short time for the pointing model. 07:10Z enclosure off The sky is clear, but the dust count is 4-5K, so we monitor the combination of the dust and humidity closely. 09:21Z APOGEE calibrations started and scheduler ran. 10:20Z collecting exposures for the pointing model finished. At this point we have accumulated 21,000 dust hours which is the limit for the current humidity (over 50%). We have to close. 10:20Z enclosure on, ventilation stopped. The pointing model analysis shows that something was wrong. The home-relaxing M1/M2 was bypassed since we have it done within 24 hours. This time we edited the instrument block i_ca1_engcam_0deg.dat file in all necessary 3 places. The preparation part went smoothly. Eng. cam worked perfectly. The cooling was checked and set to -40 C. We found a good focus, FWHM was ~ 6 pix. During taking the stars for the model the telescope drifted away from stars systematically, i.e. they came closer and closer to the edge of the chip, then started disappearing. We noticed that the calib offset was adjusted by its own and drove telescope out of the stars. Since the offset drifted away up to 8 arcminutes, we had no chance to get stars on the CCD without reseting the calib offset. We reseted the calib offset a few times during observing the grid which helped to return stars to the field of view.
