Subject: 2.5m obslog 20121115 (MJD 56247) From: asimmons@apo.nmsu.edu Date: Fri, 16 Nov 2012 11:41:26 +0000 (UTC) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday November 15, 2012 (MJD 56247) ---- Observing Team ---- Howard Brewington Audrey Oravetz Elena Malanushenko (afternoon) ---- Observing Plan ---- 15 Nov 2012 56247.0 0.19 01:12 12:24 21:51 09:05 BOSS 11.2 hours ---- Observing Summary ---- We opened for the first hour and gathered a couple of exposures on cart 10, plate 5962 in partly cloudy to mostly cloudy conditions. We closed at 02:10Z and remained closed the rest of the night due to heavy clouds. There is a key left in the splitter chassis in the downstairs enclosure (in order to activate the switches to disable interlocks). We did not remove it just in case it was there for a reason. ---- Observing Log ---- Afternoon: --------- 22:01Z Tested actors and status, all were ok. Made sop bias, dark I did first collimation with cart 14, which was in telescope. I needed to do minor adjustment of r2. COLLIMATE: Camera b1 appears to be OUT-OF-FOCUS (|mean| > 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict blue camera ring movement of -5.0 degrees for spectro-1 COLLIMATE: Camera b2 appears to be OUT-OF-FOCUS (|mean| > 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict blue camera ring movement of 7.5 degrees for spectro-2 COLLIMATE: Predict (red) piston movement of -42 steps for spectro-1 COLLIMATE: Issue command: "boss moveColl spec=sp1 a=-42 b=-42 c=-42" COLLIMATE: Predict (red) piston movement of 213 steps for spectro-2 COLLIMATE: Issue command: "boss moveColl spec=sp2 a=213 b=213 c=213" motorPosition sp1: 19653, 20099, 19910; sp2: 34285, 34449, 35147; Median spectrographs temperatures: Tsp1= 9.1, Tsp2= 8.8; Outside air temperature= 9.1; I checked the telescope and mounted cart 10. I found out that during my collimation, somebody went in enclosure. I did not know, was it affect my previous collimation or not. I do one more collimation with cart 10. I found out that I need to adjust r1 and r2, and b1 and b2 were also very much out of spec, b1=-2(-5), b2=10(+7). Kaike asked me to contact with him if I need to adjust the rings. I could not get him by telephone. And my guess was that out telescope was not at equilibrium anymore and new b-rings values were not valid anymore. I decided to leave them and check one more time later. And they changed: COLLIMATE: Camera b1 appears to be OUT-OF-FOCUS (|mean| > 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict blue camera ring movement of -5.2 degrees for spectro-1 COLLIMATE: Camera b2 appears to be OUT-OF-FOCUS (|mean| > 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict blue camera ring movement of 9.5 degrees for spectro-2 COLLIMATE: Predict (red) piston movement of -128 steps for spectro-1 COLLIMATE: Issue command: "boss moveColl spec=sp1 a=-128 b=-128 c=-128" COLLIMATE: Predict (red) piston movement of -170 steps for spectro-2 COLLIMATE: Issue command: "boss moveColl spec=sp2 a=-170 b=-170 c=-170" 23:20Z: Started ventilation. Night: ====== 00:21Z - Opened enclosure to partly cloudy skies. Force-filled the spectrographs. JohnP ran some tests during twilight hours. He tagged a new version of SOP: v1_2_15. 00:45Z - gotoField cart 10, plate 5962. Seeing 1.8". Some clouds. 01:08Z - 15 min exposure. Lots of clouds now. 01:41Z - 15 min exposure. Lost guide stars for several minutes. Declared bad because of how bad the conditions got. 01:58Z - Took another set of cals, since we needed to slew back to the field after a test for John. We declared the previous set 'test' and reran SOS to reduce the science exposures again. 151018-19. 02:15Z - Clouds really thick now. We closed, but kept the fans running. 02:54Z - Saw radar returns nearby. We stopped ventilating. 04:48Z - Started APOGEE morning cals and ran the autoscheduler. 11:32Z - The clouds never cleared. We gave up. ---- Telescope Offsets and Scale ---- --- Offsets --- (arcsec) Time Inst Az Alt Rot objArcOff guideRot calibOff -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01:07 10-5962A 50.8 82.1 227.3 ( 6.3, -0.3) ( 70.5) ( -7.2, 7.2, 0.0) boss 01:24 10-5962A 25.6 84.3 204.1 ( 6.8, -0.3) ( 108.4) ( -7.2, 7.2, 0.0) boss 01:40 10-5962A -12.8 84.7 167.8 ( 6.5, -0.7) ( 73.5) ( -7.2, 7.2, 0.0) boss 05:19 10-5962A 121.0 30.0 0.0 ( 0.0, 0.0) ( 0.0) ( -7.2, 7.2, 0.0) boss ---- Focus Log ---- --- Focus --- Time Inst Scale M1 M2 Focus Az Alt Temp Wind Dir -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01:07 10-5962A 1.000152 -1506 416 545 50.8 82.1 3.4 12 86 1.8 boss 01:24 10-5962A 1.000180 -1777 250 607 25.6 84.3 3.2 12 81 2.0 boss 01:40 10-5962A 1.000164 -1618 375 600 -12.8 84.7 3.4 11 84 1.6 boss 05:19 10-5962A 1.000150 -1484 607 577 121.0 30.0 2.0 5 104 2.1 boss ---- Weather Log ---- --- Weather --- Time Inst Temp DP Dif Humid Wind Dir Dust,1um IRSC IRSCm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01:07 10-5962A 3.4 -13.4 16.8 27 12 86 599 74.8 1584.0 1.8 boss 01:24 10-5962A 3.2 -14.3 17.5 26 12 81 408 194.3 1579.0 2.0 boss 01:40 10-5962A 3.4 -14.3 17.7 25 11 84 373 203.8 1622.0 1.6 boss 05:19 10-5962A 2.0 -13.6 15.6 30 5 104 548 233.5 1751.0 2.1 boss ---- Telescope Status ---- 23:30Z - Began ventilation.
