Subject: 2.5m obslog 20110714 (MJD 55757) From: snedden@apo.nmsu.edu Date: Fri, 15 Jul 2011 11:53:29 +0000 (UTC) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday July 14, 2011 (MJD 55757) ---- Observing Team ---- Dan Oravetz Steph Snedden Dmitry Bizyaev (APOGEE overseer) Steve Majewski (on messenger) ---- Observing Plan ---- APOGEE commissioning/Science all night ---- Observing Summary ---- Because of rain last night, no plugging was requested, yet today's MARVELS/APOGEE planning web page showed a completely different set of plates than what are plugged. We went with the observing order from last night's plan. The MARVELS ThAr lamp is extremely faint. The night started off mostly cloudy, so we tried ASDAF after opening. We observed: 30 Her - not useful data - clouds too thick. Antares - unsuccessful - the counts were either too low or too high through variable cloud. HD 177724 - a telluric standard - successfully observed. We then went to standard science plates Cartridge 4, plate 5071A - APOGEE / MARVELS 7 sequences 500s each (APOGEE) / 60 minutes (MARVELS) Cartridge 9, plate 4940A, APOGEE/MARVELS 9 sequences 500s each (APOGEE) / 60 minutes (MARVELS) missing spectra in fibers 79/80 of MARVELS ---- Observing Log ---- Afternoon: --------- 23:44Z - Actors checked. All okay except BOSS and ecamera, as expected. 00:30Z - Afternoon checkout was without problems. Cartridge 1 mounted 00:35Z - Ventilation started 00:48Z - Started APOGEE afternoon calibration script. 01:45Z - MARVELS ThAr lamp on. 02:17Z - Opened enclosure to mostly cloudy skies. Night: ----- Between the clouds and twilight, the guide fiber background was too bright to find guide stars right away. 03:02Z - Too cloudy to find guide stars so we resort to ASDAF. 30 Her ------ apRaw-01950012.fits | Fiber 203 | 200 s | Counts 14,000 - 17,000 apRaw-01950013.fits | Fiber 203 | 200 s | Counts 7,000 - 8,000 Clouds getting thicker. The following have too little signal apRaw-01950014.fits | Fiber 241 | 200 s | Counts 300 - 500 apRaw-01950015.fits | Fiber 199 | 300 s | Counts 700 - 900 apRaw-01950016.fits | Fiber 199 | 400 s | Counts 200 - 400 Signal is too low in all but fiber 203 - should be redone. Moving on to Antares. It was so cloudy we couldn't find Antares in the acquisition fiber. At this point we waited for conditions to improve. 05:27Z - We are able to see Antares and center up. It was very difficult to get the correct amount of signal because the clouds were coming and going rapidly. apRaw-01950017.fits | Fiber 203 | 32 s | Counts 10 - 15 too low apRaw-01950018.fits | Fiber 203 | 300 s | Counts 40,000 - 50,000 too high apRaw-01950019.fits | Fiber 203 | 32 s | Counts 50 - 70 too low apRaw-01950020.fits | Fiber 203 | 150 s | Counts 50 - 100 too low apRaw-01950021.fits | Fiber 203 | 300 s | Counts 100 - 150 too low At this point we gave up on Antares because we were heading into more clouds as the star set. Should be redone. 05:49Z - We thought we would try HD 177724 next - a telluric standard. Again, variable clouds made this somewhat trying. apRaw-01950022.fits | Fiber 203 | 150 s |Counts 150 - 200 too low apRaw-01950023.fits | Fiber 203 | 300 s |Counts 1800 - 2200 might be OK apRaw-01950024.fits | Fiber 241 | 150 s |Counts 8000 - 9000 should be OK apRaw-01950025.fits | Fiber 199 | 400 s |Counts 4000 - 6000 should be OK apRaw-01950026.fits | Fiber 203 | 400 s |Counts 300 - 400 too low apRaw-01950027.fits | Fiber 203 | 600 s |Counts 1300 - 1700 might be OK apRaw-01950028.fits | Fiber 241 | 900 s |Counts 500 - 600 too low apRaw-01950029.fits | Fiber 241 | 600 s |Counts 200 - 300 too low apRaw-01950030.fits | Fiber 241 | 600 s |Counts 250 - 350 too low apRaw-01950031.fits | Fiber 241 | 117 s |Counts 8000 - 11000 should be OK apRaw-01950032.fits | Fiber 199 | 117 s |Counts 1500 - 2000 might be OK apRaw-01950033.fits | Fiber 199 | 300 s |Counts 1800 - 2300 might be OK apRaw-01950034.fits | Fiber 199 | 639 s |Counts 1800 - 2500 might be OK apRaw-01950035.fits | Fiber 203 | 639 s |Counts 6000 - 7500 should be OK apRaw-01950036.fits | Fiber 199 | 639 s |Counts 2800 - 4100 should be OK Done.
