Completed dithered flats on cartridge 15 in addition to spectro biases and darks while we were closed. We observed the following BOSS fields: Cart. 18, 4989 - DONE Cart. 14, 4990 - DONE Cart. 13, 5068 We experienced misbehavior with the instrument lift during two separate instances of mounting a cartridge. Details are provided in the Log section. ---- Observing Log ---- Afternoon ========= Checked out STUI actors, telescope and enclosure, dewars, mirror numbers, fiducial crossings, guider and spectrograph temperatures. Everything is responsive, in-spec, and performing normally. Took guider dark, spectro bias and dark. Took flat and arc to check SoS values. We delayed ventilation due to clouds and radar returns in the area. Night ===== Clouds and radar returns prevented us from opening at sunset. We also had a few drops of rain fall, but it really didn't amount to anything significant to help offset the still-excessively dry conditions. 02:25Z - Started dithered flat sequence on cartridge 15. (132568 - 132589) 03:23Z - Started spectro biases (132590 - 132614) and darks (132615 - 132617). 07:00Z - The clouds and radar returns dissipated to the extent that we were comfortable opening. Mounted cart. 18. The instrument lift was misbehaving while we were mounting cart. 18. After mounting cart. 18 and lowering the lift, the lift stopped about halfway down for no apparent reason. All indications on the instrument latch controller board were normal, there were no abnormal readings on the hand paddle either. All it took was cycling the thumbwheel up and down a couple of times and the lift plate began descending as expected. 07:05Z - Opened. The lift stopped about halfway up when raising cart. 14 to be mounted/latched and when it stopped there was no excessive force being reported by the lift hand paddle and the instrument latch controller was correctly indicating that the cartridge was in fact on the lift. Since we couldn't go upwards, we decided to send the lift downwards momentarily (downward motion worked) and then when we brought it back up it crossed beyond the previous stuck height and we latched it normally. After latching cart. 14, the lift would not go down. In this case the hand paddle force reading was ~1600. We unlatched cart. 14 and then went down, which worked, and once we reached ~1/4th the way down we attempted to go back up and re-mount, but now the lift wasn't responding to going upward again. Cycling the thumbwheel again eventually resulted in the lift going up. Bottom line is that the lift intermittently and unexpectedly stops during its motion in both up and down directions and both with and without cartridge loading. Cycling the lift motion via the thumbwheel ultimately gets us where we need to be, but indications from the hand paddle and the instrument latch controller during our stoppages did not providing evidence as to what was causing the hiccups in motion, at least nothing was clear to us. We got stuck (az and alt brakes on) during a slew at about az=108 and alt=18.
