Subject: 2.5m obslog 20110616 (MJD 55729) From: doravetz@apo.nmsu.edu Date: Fri, 17 Jun 2011 11:34:39 +0000 (UTC) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday June 16, 2011 (MJD 55729) ---- Observing Team ---- Audrey Oravetz Dan Oravetz Steve Majewski Peter Frinchaboy Craig Loomis (support) ---- Observing Plan ---- MARVELS/APOGEE/Flexible Engineering ---- Observing Summary ---- We managed to get one MARVELS exposure and one and a half sequences of APOGEE exposures before we reverted to bright APOGEE standards the remainder of the night as a result of clouds. ---- Observing Log ---- Afternoon ========= 23:45Z - Checked that the actors were alive and responsive and recorded the software versions. Checked the temperatures of the spectrographs and the guider. Note that I am running STUI 1.1b3, but Audrey is running 1.1b1 (which has proven stable to unexpected crashes) so that we cover our bases. 23:51Z - Took APOGEE quartz flat prior to blowing off gang connector/port for dust check. 00:15Z - Checked out telescope/enclosure. Checked fiducials and mirror numbers. Cleaned gang connectors with air. Refrained from ventilation due to high winds and dust. 00:25Z - Turned on MARVELS ThAr lamp. 00:36Z - Started APOGEE cals. In the platedb web-app Plan Observing page, plate 4825 is described only as 'MARVELS' in the Survey section and NOT 'APOGEE,MARVELS' as we expected. When clicking the link for more detailed information on this plate, the Designs Inputs Information section has 'MARVELS APOGEE' listed for instruments. We're not sure at what point the Survey label is generated and whether or not it is done automatically (e.g. during mapping), or manually. 01:40Z - Began ventilation. Night ===== 02:15Z - Opened to partly cloudy skies and dust counts ~3.3k. 02:18Z - Started MARVELS cals. Cart. 1, 4936, N5634SGR2 ************************ We had a problem after the guider flat was taken getting guider images to show up in the STUI Guide Window. We would see the guider integrate, but at the conclusion of the integration nothing updated in the Guide Window. Note that the guider flat was written to disk. Craig fixed the problem and assured us we shouldn't experience this behavior again. We also had difficulty acquiring the guide stars as a result of clouds and twilight working against us. We verified our offsets by going to a nearby fk5 and by checking last night's offsets in the log, so we were confident we were pointed in the right spot. A break in the clouds confirmed our suspicions that it was in fact the weather conditions preventing us from acquiring the field. 03:01Z - Started APOGEE exposure sequence. 03:02Z - Started MARVELS exposure. 03:57Z - Sky. 04:03Z - Flat. Any star any fiber tests. We had a very difficult time centering up the standard star in acquisition fiber 11. When we issued arc offsets, the star was not moving in the fiber the direction we would expect. In other words, instead of RA,Dec offsets coinciding with E/W,N/S movements, the movements were in a coordinate system that appeared to be ~45 deg. rotated relative to North and East. With Craig's help we opted to use guide fiber 3 and when we began centering the star up in guide fiber 3 the arc movements behaved as we would expect and NOT the way they were behaving when we used guide fiber 11. 05:07Z - MARVELS cals. Tested the 'gotoStow' command during the cartridge change and it correctly moved only altitude to 30 degrees to make removing the gang connectors more convenient. Cart. 7, 4819, M13 ****************** 05:25Z - Started APOGEE exposure sequence. 05:25Z - Started MARVELS exposure. As a result of the clouds, the APOGEE exposure sequence was cut short and we switched to observing Arcturus and other bright standards. The MARVELS exposure was also aborted due to clouds/low signal. The rest of the night we battled clouds so we spent the time observing standards down different science fibers. 11:25Z - Closed. ---- Spectroscopy Data Summary ---- MARVELS ------- Image Cart Plate Texp Exptype Object Seeing - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - T02:18:20.660 0 2. 209072. 3384.
