Subject: 2.5m obslog 20110517 (MJD 55699) From: elenam@apo.nmsu.edu Date: Wed, 18 May 2011 12:16:41 +0000 (UTC) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday May 17, 2011 (MJD 55699) ---- Observing Team ---- Dan Oravetz (observer) Olena Malanushenko (observer) Stephanie Snedden Craig Loomis (online) Paul Harding (online) John Wilson UVA Scientist Gail Zasowski UVA Grad Student Ricardo Schiavon Gemini Observatory Steve Majewski UVA Scientist Eric Walker UVA Staff Stephane Beland University of Colorado Matthew Citon University of Texas (on call) Jon Holtzman NMSU ---- Observing Plan ---- 17 May 2011 55699.0 0.94 03:32 10:27 12:11 19:07 MARVELS/APOGEE 7.9 hours Flexible Engineering ---- Observing Summary ---- It was clear and photometric for whole night. We did Apogee tests. We have observed 3 Apogee plates for tests. Apogee focus was good. We made several tests: test #1 Offset test - to check fiber centering test #2 Apogee selected stars test- took spectra of radial velocity standard and of metallicity standard. test #3 Refraction balance -to check guider refraction correction test #4 Blank sky exposure test #5 Arc and flat with dome lamps. Guider was ok close to Moon as 11 degrees. Guider has been working until 25 min before sunrise. We think it was too tight to connect/disconnect Apogee fiber to stow and to cartridge. ---- Observing Log ---- Afternoon ----------- Telescope was checked and all systems were working properly. 01:30Z started ventilation Night ------ 02:18:16 encl25m : open; Clear, wind hight ~35 mph. 02:26:30 loadCart: ct=8, pl=4822, sd=B; 03:02:36 sop.gotoField Slewed to field as usual using sop gui Made guider flat on gotoField Set guider wavelength to 16600 A, guider setRefractionBalance corrRatio=1 There was a problem to unplug Apogee fiber from stow position (densepack hole using Apogee terminology). It was too tight for me, French helped to unplug it and it started to be possible to unplug/plug it. I plugged fiber to cartridge. Centered guider stars normally We made the Apogee tests: 1) test guiding for Apogee plates in center of field and in decenter pointing 2) got Apogee science exposures on selected stars 3) test of the refraction using 5400 A and 16600 A for guiding 4) proceed with some mixed requested form Apogee's team Details of these tests I provided in problem section. Re-connected fiber from cartridge to stow Made Apogee calibration 07:23:18 loadCart: ct=1, pl=4817, sd=A; 07:23:40 sop.gotoField = running; Found stars on GTF Set guider wavelength to 16600 A, corrRatio=1 Centered stars properly.
