French talked me through it via telephone. By his instructions, I increased the pre-load between the alt capstans and alt drive surfaces. It was moved from 2.25 inches to 2.5 inches, which increase the load by 500 lbs according to French. I did a careful top/bottom balance for the alt axis and slew the scope from 90 degree to 6 degrees several times; all seemed well. While stopped at six degrees alt, however, the scope still slip when I did an axis init. SO, I LEFT THE ALT_SLIP DETECTOR BYPASSED per Dan Long's instructions from last night. We can get through the night in the state, but this problem may need some additional attention tomorrow. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions. I preparing to drive home now.
