Subject: 2.5m obslog 20090604 (MJD 54987) Date: Fri, 5 Jun 2009 12:03:49 +0000 (UTC) From: elenam@apo.nmsu.edu (Elena M) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday June 4, 2009 (MJD 54987) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Audrey Simmons Elena Malanushenko ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! 4 Jun 2009 54987.0 0.84 MARVELS 7.5 hours ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The most of night has been lost due to clouds and scattered rain. We observed the following MARVELS plates: Cart 9, plate 3280A fibers 117/118 broken (A-plate: 117,118 Blue 20 Clear Orange 40) Cart 9, plate 3280B fibers 89/90 broken (B-plate: 089,090 Blue 6 Blue Magenta 98) Cart 3, plate 3277B - all fibers are good. DIMM worked just fine tonight. *** There was a LN2 leak coming from the red camera on spectrograph 2. We received a watcher warning at 08:13Z about the ln2temp and secondary dewer pressure. At 09:45Z, we noticed the warning. We checked the camera temperatures and issued primary and secondary fills immediately. Camera temperatures returned to normal values at 10:58Z. Dan Long was notified and came to the site. *** Note: We did not catch the watcher message because we are used to seeing a red value over the camera system (from the spectra mechanicals for sp1). However, it is more worrisome why no critical alerts were sent out. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Checkout went smoothly. Did not check spectral collimation, but it still should be in focus for a temperature similar to last night (~12C). 1:20Z ventilation Night: ======== 02:10Z enclosure is off It was light clouds on mnt, but heavy clouds and radar returns around our mnt. We are still safe to start observation and take chanhe to get data. Cart 9, plate 3280A, Marvels, FK5 used to find the guider stars 02:46Z - calibration bracket start time. File T02:46:51.490,fits QA is in spec 03:03Z - stars, Field HD89307 50 min exposure, file T03:06:27.220.fits Seeing 1.2", alt 42, =24 Broken fibers corresponding to spectra 117/118. 03:46Z - Evening 18-degree twilight. 03:58Z calibration bracket file T03:58:35.070.fits Moved to filed B, on the same cart 9, plate 3280, marvels FSonGTF 04:08Z - stars, Field HD89744, 50 min exposure, file T04:08:44.580.fits Seeing 1.5", alt 42, =16 Clouds came to us during the exposure. Broken fibers for spectra 89/90. Change cartridge. 05:00Z Calibration bracket file T05:00:53.280.fits Cart 3 plate 3277B, Marvels FSonGTF 05:21Z - stars, Field GJ436, 50 min exposure, file T05:21:11.470.fits Seeing 1.8", alt 41, = 8 Clouds were bad. Last 10 minuts of this exposure pmt dropped under 10 and guider could not detect stars. 20% of fibers show s/n better then pmt 10, and can be useful. So, we use "good" quolity but not Junk. No broken fibers. 06:14Z Calibration bracket start time file T06:14:59.160.fits 06:20Z enclosure is on, but we still keep ventilation. 06:40Z rain sensor alarm, a few drops of rain outside, we stopped ventilation and closed doors. 03:40Z started ventilation again as possible clouds go away soon, or just a hole. Cart 6 plate 3495 is mounted, pre-Selection Enclosure is off. We received a watcher warning at 08:13Z about the ln2temp and secondary dewer pressure. At 09:45Z, we noticed the warning. We checked the camera temperatures and issued primary and secondary fills immediately. Camera temperatures returned to normal values at 10:58Z. Investigation shown there is a LN2 leak coming from the red camera on spectrograph 2. Dan Long was notified and came to the site. *** Before the observations we filled primary as usually. In one hour after we filled the secondary around 4 am, it started to fill again in half an hour. Note: We did not catch the watcher message because we are used to seeing a red value over the camera system (from the spectra mechanicals for sp1). However, it is more worrisome why no critical alerts were sent out. 11:20Z - endNight rejoiced, Audrey ran it from sop as auto command and it did not complain. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 61548, plate -9999 ------- 00:22 61548 0.0 bias 01:26 61549 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:11Z 9 3280 -71.36 -0.0013 47.47 0.0029 125.31 0.0151 1.000070 05:21Z 3 3277 263.33 -0.0012 44.28 0.0031 110.93 0.0134 1.000100 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:11Z 9 3280 1.00007 -690 541 -75 -71 47.5 16.5 7 186 -- 1.3" 05:22Z 3 3277 1.00010 -986 382 0 263 44.3 14.6 18 141 -- 1.8" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:18Z 67 26 9 229 (SW) 1197 - 01:53Z 64 28 4 258 (WSW) 1281 - 02:26Z 61 27 6 205 (SSW) 1305 - 02:56Z 61 26 6 187 (S) 1336 - 03:29Z 61 26 9 185 (S) 1309 - 04:00Z 62 26 11 195 (SSW) 1458 - 04:30Z 61 27 8 189 (S) 1486 - 05:03Z 59 31 20 144 (SE) 1259 - 05:33Z 58 35 19 142 (SE) 1113 - 06:06Z 57 37 22 137 (SE) 1369 - 06:36Z 56 38 27 141 (SE) 1332 - 07:06Z 55 41 27 140 (SE) 1393 - 07:38Z 55 40 24 130 (SE) 1295 - 08:09Z 56 38 13 165 (SSE) 1315 - 08:39Z 57 37 15 164 (SSE) 1421 - 09:11Z 58 34 18 181 (S) 1449 - 09:41Z 58 32 15 171 (S) 2374 - 10:12Z 58 33 19 219 (SW) 1579 - 10:46Z 57 34 12 186 (S) 1587 - 11:16Z 56 35 14 196 (SSW) 1652 - 11:46Z 56 35 19 205 (SSW) 7758 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:20Z - Began ventilation.
