Date: Wed, 10 May 2006 11:47:02 GMT From: hjbrew@apo.nmsu.edu Subject: 2.5m obslog 20060509 (MJD 53865) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday May 9, 2006 (MJD 53865) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Observer: Howard Brewington ET crew: Jian Ge, Scott Fleming ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- There's seems to be a problem with the cartridge bay door; I had this problem during my dayshift last darkrun. When I close the door, it closes and then reopens after reaching the bottom. I could not see anything in its way. Also, during the last cartridge change of the night, I had a problem with the hand-paddle for the cartridge lift at the telescope. The thumb wheel became stuck and would not turn. I kept trying and finally it started working again. High wind and dust caused us a late start tonight. We had a dust event at 07:00Z, in fact, that increased to about 32K. Although we were closed at that time, dust in the enclosure was measured at ~10K with the handheld dust counter. Dust-hours=~30K, so the mirrors should probably be checked/cleaned. We finished three ET plates, i.e., 8027, 8028, and 8029. We had a few extra minutes, so we did another short exposure on 8028. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- I found a problem with the mirror numbers during the afternoon checkout. The Lateral E of the primary was off by 1.0; see mirror numbers section. So, I had to do the home/relax procedure for M1 to make it happy. Night: ----------- 01:48Z I did not ventilate before sunset because of high winds and dust. 02:45Z Wind speed and dust levels started to drop. 03:00Z Mounted cart 09 (plate 8025) in preparation of pulling the enclosure. 03:20Z Wind speed below closure limits for the past 35-minutes, so the enclosure was pulled and the spectro dewars topped off. 03:35Z Wind speed and dust quickly increased again. In fact, I could not see any of the lights at Holloman Airforce Base. 03:40Z Pulled the enclosure back over the telescope but continued to ventilate since dust was only ~3.5K 03:45Z Closed doors/louvers and turned off fans as dust went > 5K. 03:51Z Dust climbed > 11K 03:55Z Dust > 20K, so I went to the lower enclosure and used the keypad to increase the air pressure inside the enclosure in an effort to keep out the dust. I checked the dust level inside the closed enclosure with the handheld dust counter; it was ~10K. 04:05Z Dust outside the enclosure > 26K 04:17Z Dust outside the enclosure > 32K 05:17Z Wind decreased. Dust ~20K outside the enclosure; dust=8.6K inside the enclosure. Humidity =~35% 06:23Z Wind speed increasing again; however, the dust outside the enclosure now at ~10K. Humidity =36% 07:10Z Dust level now at ~5K, so we mounted cart 02 and pulled the building. We also needed to do some midnight ET cals at this time. 07:44Z Cart 02, Plate 8027. Had guide stars on goToField. Dust=~5K at the start of this 50-minute exposure. Seeing = 2.1" Humidity=41%. At the end of the exposure, the seeing had improved to ~1.5", and the dust=~4.5K 08:50Z Cart 05, Plate 8029. Had guide stars with cleared offsets. Seeing=~1.5" and dust =4.3K at the start of this 50-minute exposure. Humidity =39%. 09:55Z Cart 03, Plate 8028. Had guide stars on goToField. Seeing=~1.5" and dust =3.8K at the start of this 50-minute exposure. Humidity =31%. Had some extra time, so we did a second exposure on this plate. endNight finished and was happy.
