From: stephanie snedden Subject: SEGUE Phone Con Notes - Oct 17, 2006 Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2006 14:32:26 -0600 Let's have a SEGUE phone con Tue Oct 17rd at 2:30pm CDT, 3:30 pm EDT, 1:30 pm MDT, 12:30pm PDT, 19:30 Z Contact info: Dial In: 1 (800) 928-6358 (USA - toll free) International participants should dial: 1 (630) 693-3212 (this is a toll call) Passcode: 8875327 Attending: Brian, Connie, Peregrine, Kurt, Jennifer, Steph, Kyle, Jim, Jill, Robert, Tim, Carlos Agenda: M71 run 6282 and processing status Important because of high metallicity standards, but has been failing processing. Crowded-field stars are being called cosmic rays, and the pipeline is failing at that point. They are playing with the cosmic ray parameter, and Robert will try running the PAN-STARRS code on the M71 data. high-res reductions Analysis in-progress, but a variety of S/N Keck spectra need to be added. Pipeline and high-res (Keck) metallicities and Temperatures show an offset, and they wonder if they will continue to see this offset with high-res reductions from other telescopes (HET, Subaru). Tim and co. have run some tests that indicate using synthetic spectra should be used with the high-res spectra, and the offsets seen are probably from the high-res reductions, not the pipeline reductions. The results are very sensitive to the temperature that is fit. Tim suggests fixing T for some abundances tests. radial velocity work updates Spectro v5 pipeline: Craig has run a plate that had two different pluggings through the pipeline. This helped establish the RV outliers. More work being done. Scatter is worse for BHBs, and Connie is trying to understand the internal scatter from ELODIE templates. crowded field reduction status Working with run 535, which goes through the Galactic plane. Two columns have been reduced. The remainder failed to process. Robert is working on uniform weighting of colors in the photometry and sky subtraction. They should have results good enough for target selection next week. Plate drilling deadline -- end of Oct -- stripe 1188 There will be some plates at high negative b (near S Galactic pole). We should get them in time for the November dark run. Observing plan for rest of fall (SN season overlap) They are eager to get the 72 N data. This is high priority in the observing plan. Interrupt SN imaging as necessary. SSS extension -- discussion on 2 year (vs. 6 year) science They need to write up a two-year version of the SSS extension by the end of October. They also need to establish how SEGUE could mesh with the U Va program.
