Actually, there were only a few problems last night, and only one (that
I am aware of or could see from the log) was big enough to interfere
with taking data, but symptoms of it showed up all over the place:
murmur was having serious problems. Moving the log from an NFS mounted
disk to local disk seemed to have fixed the issue, so I expect that it
was NFS related.
Margaret Votava should have been listed as part of the support staff; it
was her late evening support of murmur that really helped track down
what was going on.
