Date: Wed, 24 Aug 2005 10:31:38 GMT From: observer@apo.nmsu.edu Subject: 2.5m obslog 20050823 (MJD 53606) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday August 23, 2005 (MJD 53606) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Jurek Krzesinski Night: John Barentine Dan Long Support: Steph Snedden Fritz Stauffer Eric Neilsen Kurt Biery ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- DA integration ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Bad weather prevented opening but lots of things were going on all the same. The engineering camera is mounted and will take images via TCC command. One needs to restore the nfs connection to sdssfiles1 when the Mac is rebooted. SimpleMon does see the images as they come in. Yes! We need to add cleanupMurmur to the afternoon checkout list now that the daily host reboot no longer happens. Had trouble archiving imager frames (gangs were ok). Problem traced to permissions of vxworks boards writing to sdssfiles1 and repaired. Related to changes made during the day to accommodate biasCheck. At least twice tonight we got "couldn't read /p/astrobase/fitsHeaders.tcl" when attempting a drift. Crate reboot solved it. Also at least twice one of the nodes (could have been photo1 both times) failed to start reading the drift, necessitating reboot (yesterday happened to astro). Kurt Biery spent several hours working on the spectro DA. He is still running into problems trying to read both VCI+ boards simultaneously. New fiducial tables were generated and look good. We were unable to check them in though. Complaints of cvsuser not having permission to modify module mcp were the reason given. Given that this was done from sdsshost it is not clear why anything should have changed. Jen or Brian, could you have a look? Fritz got SoS so it can see the spectro files on devel1. It is of course monumentally unhappy with what it sees (warm ccds, partial frames, etc) but it is able to access them. Murmur is exhibiting a reluctance to post large amounts of information from a given source. It isn't that it rejects it, it just lets it trickle in slowly. The result is that time stamps for lines so affected are much delayed from reality and may cause confusion. The prime example noted was that the murmur log was showing files being archived 15 or 20 minutes after a run ended, when the archiving happens almost instantly (as a check of frames on sdssfiles1 shows). endNight was torture tested again with things like over 2000 unarchived frames, but with a few tweaks from Eric it finished properly. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Getting the guider mac to see the guider directory on sdssfiles1: Right now this doesn't happen automatically on restarting the Mac. You need to go to the Chooser, select NFS, then from the list select sdssfiles1. It will ask for the usual observer password. A moment later the guider directory icon should appear. At this point the camera should be able to write to the guider directory. There was a problem with setup and csh. If using csh and setup was issued more than once, it would complain about TCL_LIBRARY being an undefined variable. Eric traced this to a problem with astroda un-setting-up a variable twice. Apparently there is a difference in how the shell environment handles deleting a nonexistent environment variable between sdsshost and devel1 (at least for csh). HgCd lamps were found to be on. MCP menu was unable to turn them off. The manual pendant for lamp control will turn them off. An MCP reboot reestablished control. im> goDrift -bias 2005-08-24 03:55:27Z: Beginning data taking leap seconds = 32 2005-08-24 03:55:31Z: beginData has failed: {id1 {}} {id2 {}} {id3 {}} {id4 {couldn't read file "/p/astrobase/fitsHeaders.tcl"}} {id5 {}} {id6 {}} {ad1 {}} {ad2 {}} {ad3 {}} {ad4 {}} Error: goDrift ends with error in beginData Crate reboot gets things sorted. We need to add cleanupMurmur to the daily afternoon checkout to make sure the murmur server gets restarted. Imager frames not being archived (same ftp error as last night, but now no frames being archived. Gangs are however being archived. permissions problems creating directory from vxworks caused by work during the day to get biasCheck to run (changing ownership to observer). Couldn't read fitsHeader.tcl for id1 when taking bias. Once again photo crate reboot got things working. Archiving messages continue long after run finishes and apparently long after the files are already transferred from the pool. Eric checked run 5508 against what was expected in terms of run length and ramp. It was ended at frame 24, with a ramp that went as far as 32 for the g chips. Run 5510 which had only a single frame, also had the proper ramps, so the single frame run yesterday which did not was a fluke, maybe due to a crate reboot during ramp writing? Kurt Biery spent several hours this evening working on the spectro DA. He has run into a bit of an impasse getting the two VCI+ boards reading simultaneously. He will continue the effort tomorrow. endNight modified to account for the 8 frame ramp added to the end of each run. This should stop the complaints about unarchived frames that really are. Right now no permissions for adding frames from pool which didn't originally get archived. We need to be able to do this. With the proper permissions set the command copyUnstoredFilesInIdReport should archive missing frames. fiducial tables: ================ John generated new fiducial tables but couldn't use cvs to check out/in. I got a little further. I could check out the old tables, but when I tried to check the new ones in I got a message saying cvsuser is not permitted to modify module mcp. > cvs ci -m "New tables after summer shutdown" az.dat alt.dat rot.dat Warning: Remote host denied X11 forwarding, perhaps xauth program could not be run on the server side. User cvsuser is not permitted to modify module `mcp' cvs server: Pre-commit check failed cvs [server aborted]: correct above errors first! Has something changed with permissions here too? Note that this is run from sdsshost. checkBias and biasCheck: ========================= From Steph: checkBias ran successfully once I rebooted the photo crates and could get a bias. Here is the output. Note the t-bars were latched: im> checkBias 5499 20 /data/photo/snedden/ Open /skycat/imager/53606/5499-20-u-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53606/5499-20-g-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53606/5499-20-r-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53606/5499-20-i-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53606/5499-20-z-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53606/5499-20-o-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53606/5499-20-l-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53606/5499-20-t-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53606/5499-20-s-bias.gif/gif {photo h3} {astro h4} The above gifs exist on devel1, but I didn't look at them. biasGen and biasCheck also ran successfully, once a set of reference bias vectors was copied to /d1/skycat/bias on devel1. The PGPlots looked like I would expect, given that the t-bars were latched. All the SoS rsync scripts pointed to: --rsync-path=/p/rsync/v2_4_3/rsync Which doesn't exist. but 'which rsync' gave /usr/bin/rsync Fritz edited the scripts, deleting the rsync-path line so that the default rsync is used. The old scripts he saved in: /data/local/ups/prd/idlspec2d/v4_10_7/bin/SAVE/ SoS now can at least rsync the files and try to analyze them. Way to go, Fritz! endNight: ========== endNight had some difficulties with the large number of unarchived frames, as well as handling the case of no ircam images. It failed, complaining of not being able to read "endFrame" - no such variable. Some quick fixes by Eric got it to the finish line. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5498 00:38Z 00:42Z 100 O 51.04 52.03 8 ignore 5499 00:52Z 01:12Z 100 O 54.73 59.62 43 ignore 5500 01:51Z 01:59Z 100 O 69.48 71.51 28 ignore 5501 02:17Z 02:19Z 100 O 75.97 76.56 8 ignore 5502 02:25Z 02:49Z 100 O 77.90 83.94 55 ignore 5503 03:15Z 03:21Z 100 O 90.50 91.88 23 ignore 5507 04:04Z 04:12Z 100 O 102.79 104.81 28 ignore 5508 04:14Z 04:25Z 100 O 105.35 108.11 32 ignore 5509 04:38Z 04:40Z 100 O 111.36 111.79 17 ignore 5510 04:41Z 04:42Z 100 O 112.05 112.37 16 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 33434, plate -9999 ------- 21:15 33434 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33436, plate -9999 ------- 21:15 33436 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33437, plate -9999 ------- 21:15 33437 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33438, plate -9999 ------- 21:15 33438 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33440, plate -9999 ------- 23:20 33440 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33441, plate -9999 ------- 23:31 33441 0.0 bias 23:57 33443 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33444, plate -9999 ------- 23:57 33444 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:22Z 67 52 17 254 (WSW) 502 - Mostly Cloudy 21:54Z 61 52 9 215 (SW) 657 - Mostly Cloudy 22:26Z 61 52 13 212 (SSW) 628 - Mostly Cloudy 00:38Z 59 50 13 214 (SW) 637 - Thunderstorms 06:55Z 51 50 8 258 (WSW) 542 - Cloudy 07:27Z 52 51 1 257 (WSW) 814 - Cloudy 08:00Z 51 50 6 241 (WSW) 286 - Cloudy 08:32Z 53 48 6 267 (W) 236 - Cloudy 09:04Z 55 45 6 275 (W) 124 - Mostly Cloudy 09:36Z 54 46 7 273 (W) 111 - Cloudy 10:08Z 55 46 4 266 (W) 129 - Cloudy ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Enclosure Never Opened Stowed at 30 deg alt, engcam installed.
