Date: Sat, 15 Jan 2005 13:06:46 GMT From: prn@apo.nmsu.edu (Pete Newman) Subject: 2.5m obslog 20050114 (MJD 53385) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday January 14, 2005 (MJD 53385) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Jurek Krzesinski Night: Scot Kleinman, Pete Newman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A few hours lost to thick cloud, then 4 plates done (1622, 1754, 1944, 1958) under variable cloud. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: ------------------- Done, spectrographs had to focused (at temp. 1.7 C). No problems to report. Night: ------ Thick cloud delayed opening until 06:30Z. During opening, the 45deg altitude fiducial was not read while moving up. We started observing under some cloud with spectroscopy. Guide stars found on gotoField with prior offsets unless noted. We saw a lot of 'Bad sky residuals" errors from SoS tonight. 06:55Z Plate 1944, cartridge 6. Done in 1 exposure, 1200s, when combined with data from MJD 53384. SDSS plate. The guider monitor efficiency meter seems to be reading anomalously low - around 10-15%, but lower than the skys should warrant. We also saw this last night on this plate, but put it down to the various software restarts made during the sp1 hardware problem. 07:49Z Plate 1754, cartridge 5. Done in 3 good exposures, 4800s. SDSS plate. No guide stars with prior or cleared offsets, but found with offsetADR -4 6 with telescope pointing to (az,alt) = (76,46). Again, the guider efficiency meter is reading low. Are the guide star brightness definitions for these plates wrong? Clouds limited (S/N)^2 >= 1.1 from 1500s exposure due to clouds on the first exposure. But by the third exposure, the sky was almost photometric and the efficiency meter was still low. We eventually realised the efficiency meter problem indicated the guider camera gain was probably incorrect, and we solved it by issuing a TCC command 'set inst=spectro' to reset the gain. We don't know how the TCC became confused about the guider gain, but that was apparently the case. Note that we think we have not issued a 'set inst=' command in many days. However, Pete thinks the problem may have begun during the confusion around the sp1 problems last night. We missed for part of the next exposure that the set-inst also reset the plate scale, but fixed it during the exposure. 10:17Z Plate 1958, cartridge 1. Done in 3 exposures, 2700s. SDSS plate. 11:27Z Plate 1622, cartridge 8. Done in 3 exposures, 3100s. SDSS plate. Guide stars found with cleared offsets. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5109 22:28Z 22:44Z 100 O 160.81 164.65 40 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): Y QA Procedures Done : Bias, flat, arc, 1944, 1754, 1958.
