Date: Tue, 16 Dec 2003 13:37:45 GMT From: long@apo.nmsu.edu (Daniel Long) Subject: 2.5m obslog 20031215 (MJD 52989) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday December 15, 2003 (MJD 52989) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington (swing) Atsuko Nitta Dan Long ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- After a 2 hour delay due to high wind, we opened to bitter cold (-10 to -12 C) and miserable seeing. Brief bouts of cloud, bad seeing, and later moderate moon held us to just four useful science exposures on two plates (6 1666, and 8 1272). However combined with the previous night's data we were able to declare 1272 done. The extreme cold caused some minor malfunction (alt locking pin sticking, alt brake not engaging properly, chiller pressure hitting 50 PSI), but nothing which interfered with data taking. Steph took a look at the DIMM. Apparently Armin's software changes over the bright time have caused some problems. Steph said she would take a look tomorrow. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon Checkout: -------------------- Spectros were focused; see problems sections for details/numbers. Night: -------------------- 02:30Z Winds die down enough to open. The spectrographs seemed to fill more quickly than usual tonight. They still took more than 30 lb of LN2 but it only needed 10 minutes to complete the fill Cartridge 3 1489 merged73 Seeing at least 4.0 arcseconds. Temperature hovering near -10 C. We thought we might be able to get one exposure on this plate before it expired, but crummy seeing, needing an FK5, and focus being nowhere near where it should be due to the telescope not being at thermal equilibrium, made setup take too long, so we decided to move on. Cartridge 6 1666 seguetest84 15.5 4.5 17.2 7.3 6.4 0.0 12.0 7.3 52988 ------------------- 21.9 4.5 29.2 14.6 needed FK5 03:29Z preCalib 03:37Z first science 03:49Z High clouds move in from the north. 04:27Z Skies clear again. 04:25Z Seeing too poor to get usable signal 05:00Z Met tower dust counter succumbs to the elements (starts reading 000) 05:50Z Seeing a little better, trying again. Still less than 2.0 (S/N)^2 Took an intermediate set of cals and SoS flagged them red (23847,48 declared bad). Looks like the cold temperatures have changed focus (they were in focus this afternoon). Had to tweak focus of the spectrographs by about -7000 to regain focus. Calib set 23853, 54 are the good ones following the focus tweak. 07:55Z This cartridge has passed beyond availability Only managed two useful exposures (23843, 23844) during the period of good seeing. The remaining science exposures had signal less than 2.0 in two or more chips (23845, 46, 55, 56). 08:00Z instChange Cartridge 8 1272 chunk64 9.0 5.5 11.7 9.4 10.3 13.0 11.1 11.6 52988 ------------------- 19.3 18.5 22.8 21.0 Done!!! 08:06Z gotoField Needed FK5 Minor trouble with altitude locking pin during the cartridge change. It got stuck about half way in. Pried it loose and tried again. This time it went in all the way, but curiously the altitude brake never came on (until a stop button was pressed). Apparently the locking pin sensor didn't sense the pin not out. All of this is probably due to the extreme cold (now -11.5C). 10:15Z No FWHM measurements from the guider in a while. The 3.5m reports 7 arcsecond seeing. 10:25Z Stopping tracking while plate pointing goes within .5 degrees of zenith. 10:46Z Reslewing to target. Field reacquired, but seeing still too poor to make it worth starting a science exposure (and we're nearly pointed at the zenith). Imagine the seeing at 2 airmasses. 11:26Z Seeing drops below 3 arcseconds. Starting a science exposure. Seeing staying between 2.3 and 3.0. Last two science exposures combined with last night's data, enough to finish plate! 13:15Z endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4322 21:41Z 21:56Z 100 O 118.55 122.33 39 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y b1-L: 1177 hot col 154 b1-R: 1054 b2-L: 1259 b2-R: 1228 r1-L: 1208 r1-R: 1233 hot col 1154, 1626 rightmost fiber cut off at upper right. r2-L: 589 r2-R: 1365 hot col 1475 rightmost 2 fibers cut off at upper right.
