But Hercules thinks he knows the cause of the problem and will investigate and fix it. We noticed that guide fiber 6 on cartridge 5 is very dirty. It needs some cleaning. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Howard took spectro biases for hours after the day crew worked on it today to fix the airvalve. the bias level finally came into spec around 03:00Z. Since the clouds were around while waiting for the bias to go into spec, we did not loose any potential science time. The sky cleared rapidly around 03:00Z and we opened at 03:15Z. The 3.5m reported 1.3" seeing, so we decided to mount the imager and try imaging. Run 3605 Frame 12 lambda=-65.8 skippy reports all is well. Focus is good from the start. Pete opened and closed the shutter many times as we imaged. They shutter operated successfully. Run 129 Lmabda -48.3 the Kent Jr says the seeing is bad. We continued imaging in hopes of the seeing imrpoving soon. It did. endDrifted at frame 186. We decided to go back in lambda and rescan from where the seeing went bad so that there are no gaps in the good imaging data in this stripe. Run 3606 FRAME 9 Lambda -51. This run has acceptable seeing from the beginning of the run. The seeing later improved to "good". Frame 167 Lambda -27 end of the science. Moon has risen -- we take donuts and then change to spectro. Frame 167 end of science in-focus Frame 187 -400 out of focus Frame 191 +400 out of focus These frames are saved for Jim Gunn at the usual place. We switched to spectro with cartridge 5. We had to fk5 to find the field. Guide fiber 6 is very dirty. While preCalib, we got goStare failed message. sp1 shutter seems to have failed -- like it did last night. mechSend indicated that the shutter was in intermediate state. After issuing few mechSend os, mechSend s, mechSend cs commands, we got the shutter to be in open state successfully. We decided that we need to ask Hercules for help. 08:39Z Hercules who went to bed 2 hrs earlier was woken up. We tried opening and closing the shutter at instChange position and all worked well. Hercules checked that the sensor positions and the shutter movement and all were well. We then went to field and did preCalib which failed due to sp1 shutter problem again. Hercules checked inside the black specmech box, the cables and air tubes and all looked fine. Hercules increased the air pressure to the shutter and rebooted spectrograph. We excercised opening and closing the shutter and it worked. We mounted the cartridge again and went to field and tried another preCalib without success. 09:50Z We called JB for help -- fortunately, he was still in the area and we were able to talk to him. While JB was on the phone, we were able to successfully do preCalib at instChange position, but when we went to field, it failed again. It looks like this shutter problem is related to the telescope position. By now, the CCD has been flooded. We decided to do many biases to flush out the charges and we also decided to mount a new cartridge to see if we can successfully get preCalib to work at different position. Around this time, (10:40Z) The sky is rapidly clouded over with thin clouds. We mounted cartridge 9 plate 1162. We noted that the CCD will take about 3 hrs to get down to be in spec from our experience this afternoon. Since we did not want to shine any light on the CCDs, we tested the shutter movement to see if we can get sp1 shutter to behave -- it didn't. Hercules by this time had a theory of what might be causing the problem. His theory is as following: There is a lip on the groove the shutter sits and travels on and at certain angle, the shutter hits the lip and cannot close. When the telescope is at instChange position, we are not fighting gravity and the shutter moves smoothly, so as when the telescope is at stow position (121, 30, 0). Hercules told us to move the rotator 180 degrees from where we were when we sent the telescope to gotoField and we were able to close the shutter. If this is the case, we are lucky that we are not seeing the same shutter problem in sp2. At this point, we have another hour before twilight. The only other cartridge available also has similar RA and DEC with cartridge 9 -- hence we will not be able to get the shutter work properly. The CCD was still having high counts. We cannot take any data. We decided to close and run endNight. We issued a command to take many biases. We will leave the spectrographs taking biases as we go to bed. endNight ran and rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame
