Date: Mon, 10 Jun 2002 11:21:40 GMT From: snedden@apo.nmsu.edu (Stephanie Snedden) Subject: 2.5m obslog 20020609 (MJD 52435) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday June 9, 2002 (MJD 52435) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden Scot Kleinman Atsuko Nitta, the swinger ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! Imaging or spectroscopy followed by a design review of SDSS Medusa pin proposals. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Part of strip 13 N imaged. Three cartridges declared done and useable signal on a fourth. Really annoying clouds and miller moths. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- We opened at sunset, then spent several minutes cleaning the results of the latest miller moth migration from the drive surfaces. We were on the sky for imaging well in advance of twilight to take biases & donuts. A few clouds lingered, and did not dissipate until after twilight. Stripe 13 N, started at lambda -15.5 to await twilight. Drift started at lambda -9.5. Lingering clouds. Donuts: Run 3229 focus frame -300 20 out of focus + -910 25 out of focus - -666 36 in focus (lambda=-5) Donuts are stored on landru in /home/jeg/Data/52435 Once again, the focus loop started itself after a setFocus command from IOP. We looked at the code, and saw that that is exactly how setFocus operates. It starts the focus loop, which makes sense for focus adjustments during a drift. It is not a good thing to have happen while collecting donuts. Do we modify the code or just remember to use tccPut set focus? 04:36Z It looks like it has cleared out finally. Run 3230, stripe 13 N 04:44Z - Restarted the stripe, but at a lambda of 12. GoDrift started at lambda=13. 04:47Z Good by lambda=14 at frame 14. Focus loop close to convergence. Skippy results good. 04:51Z lambda=15, frame 21. Start of science. 05:20Z lambda=23, frame 75. We see clouds !#%^^&$!! Still, what we got should be useful. 06:20Z Switched to spectroscopy. Cartridge 6, plate 791. While getting the cartridge out of the bay, we had problems with the bay lift not stopping at the right height. We sent it to the bottom, then back up again. Naturally, it cleared out again while doing this plate's first exposure, but since the satellite image indicated there could be a recurrence of clouds, we continued on with spectroscopy. This plate declared done. 07:50Z Cartridge 2, plate 972. Stars in fibers right away. Declared done. Note that there is a problem with taking a science exposure before the pre-calibs if the science exposure is less than 15 minutes long. Shorter exposures finish too close in time to the sos-redo results to be of much use. The new sos machine, which runs faster, should take care of this problem. 09:10Z Cartridge 1, plate 981. Stars in fibers only after the offsets were cleared. More cartridge bay problems (see the problems section). This plate already had good signal and a poor smear. We finished it, and took another smear. 09:56Z Cartridge 3, plate 984. Stars in fibers right away. Clouds through the field at intervals. Got some useful signal, but not declared done. Note that the imager is making secondary fills (from the 180-liter dewar) at approximately 2 hour intervals. EndNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- We sent it to the bottom, then back up and that seemed to help, but later when we tried to take a cartridge off the top shelf of the bay, the manipulator arm stopped and beeped before the cartridge was off the shelf. The upper limit of the arm had not been quite reached, but it would go no higher. In this case, we are not sure if it was the lift height or the manipulator limits being off. Both should be checked.
