Guider gain fix seems good. Blown fuse on flat-field lamp power supply lost some time (and possibly the exposures on plate 981). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Thunderstorms passing from the south west from mid afternoon continued to threaten at sunset, so we remained closed until ~04:55Z, when we opened under almost clear sky for spectroscopy. The first plate confirmed that Russell's fix to the guide camera gain worked as we now have our efficiency meter back (PR3863). We had problems for plates 913, 790 and later 981 in determining the correct focus. guiderFocus gave a broad minimum near the focus last use, -175, with a FWHM of ~2 arcsec. On the third plate, after the 3.5m reported 0.7 arcsec seeing, we found the correct focus was -275 and measured seeing at closer to 1 arcsec. Not sure what was going on here, but suspect poor (and possibly rapidly variable) seeing during the first focus loop, perhaps combined with false FWHM readings from not-quite-donutted images (can someone explain how to make good use of the guiderFocus "Estimated FWHM of PSF" parameter to get good results?). We had SoS warnings for large sky residuals several times tonight. There was a low probablity of aurora reported on www.spaceweather.com due to a CME crossing the Earth tonight. We used the modified procedure of taking preCalibs after the first science exposure, then running sos_redo after the preCalib to force reduction of the first science frame. This does require the SoS has fully reduced the flat and arc before running sos_redo, which introduces some delays. At least once, these delays meant we had already finished the second science exposure before getting the S/N values from the first, which meant it was too late to adjust exposure times. So, this procedure works is not yet perfect, but the gain of a more timely calibrations (including an extra guider flat) is probably worthwhile. During plate 981, the flat-field lamps failed to come on. See problem section #1 for details. Watchers running on sdss-commish were VERY slow tonight for no apparent reason. The driver's SOP was also very slow tonight. This seems to be related to repeated resends of spectro mechanical commands that we saw in the murmur log. Observing sequence: 05:05Z Plate 913, cartridge 6. Done in 2 exposures when added to those taken on MJD 52430. 06:13Z Plate 790, cartridge 2. Done in 3 exposures. SoS reported bad sky residuals for one exposure around 7400A. 07:27Z Plate 820, cartridge 4. Done in 3 exposures. SoS reported bad sky residuals for this plate, and we found the sky-substracted sky in fiber 569 showed a large step at around 7400A. Sky fiber 32 also has distinct differences between exposures. Sky fiber 270 looks really bad. We don't know why any of this should happen. 08:47Z Plate 981, cartridge 1. Not done after 2 exposures and a smear. No stars after slew, nor with cleared offsets, but FK5 star within fiber 10 after moving to it, about (5, -5) arcsec off. We also had problems finding focus on this plate, then failed to get flat-field lamps on. We eventually got postCalibs, then SoS called for postCalibs, so it is possible the calibs were taken too long after the science exposures. Some feedback on this would be appreciated, as we hope to finish this plate tomorrow night. Closed after 18-deg twilight. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3218 23:50Z 23:58Z 100 O -37.01 -35.01 27 ignore Doghouse bias 3219 01:51Z 02:01Z 100 O -6.65 -4.26 29 ignore Doghouse bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 15519, plate -9999 ------- 23:51 15519 0.0 bias ----- sequence 15520, plate 965 ------- 01:31 15520 0.0 bias ----- sequence 15521, plate 913 ------- 10.9 9.7 9.9 8.6 From MJD 52430 05:12 15521 10.0 flat 10.6 9.1 9.5 7.9 Tonight 05:15 15522 2.0 arc ---- ---- ---- ---- 05:38 15523 900.0 target 21.5 18.8 19.4 16.5 DONE 06:02 15524 900.0 target 06:06 15525 10.0 flat 06:08 15526 2.0 arc ----- sequence 15527, plate 790 ------- 14.7 16.6 13.5 13.2 DONE 06:34 15527 901.0 target 06:37 15528 10.0 flat 06:40 15529 2.0 arc 06:58 15530 900.0 target 07:16 15531 901.0 target 07:23 15532 240.0 smear ----- sequence 15533, plate 820 ------- 22.3 22.8 18.6 18.4 DONE 07:52 15533 900.0 target 07:56 15534 10.0 flat 07:58 15535 2.0 arc 08:17 15536 900.0 target 08:35 15537 902.0 target 08:43 15538 240.0 smear ----- sequence 15539, plate 981 ------- 10.7 9.2 12.3 10.2 Not done 09:23 15539 901.0 target 09:59 15540 1202.0 target 10:36 15541 10.0 flat These may be too late to calibrate! 10:38 15542 2.0 arc 10:47 15543 240.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:30Z 6 913 -41.01 0.0009 46.78 0.0010 146.42 -0.0377 1.000150 06:25Z 2 790 208.32 -0.0024 58.43 0.0003 48.98 0.0060 1.000300 07:43Z 4 820 247.24 -0.0005 79.38 0.0011 74.12 0.0012 1.000110 09:12Z 1 981 35.65 0.0011 51.56 -0.0031 209.30 0.0035 0.999920 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5383 Stays: JL5384 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:30Z 6 913 1.00015 -1480 -209 -175 -41 46.7 12.0 19 131 BG38 1.9 05:46Z 6 913 1.00015 -1480 -102 -75 -46 44.4 11.5 18 133 BG38 2.0 06:25Z 2 790 1.00030 -2961 -1371 -75 208 58.4 11.3 12 145 BG38 2.0 07:43Z 4 820 1.00011 -1085 -55 -275 247 79.4 12.4 15 206 BG38 1.4 09:12Z 1 981 0.99992 789 1605 -225 36 51.6 12.2 15 217 BG38 1.9 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:51Z 53 43 11 44 (NE) 438 - Clouds 00:23Z 57 41 11 51 (NE) 486 - " 00:55Z 58 41 0 101 (E) 434 - " 01:27Z 58 39 4 92 (E) 531 - " 02:00Z 56 42 17 128 (SE) 466 - " 02:32Z 56 37 16 125 (SE) 298 - " 03:04Z 55 36 16 131 (SE) 224 - " 03:37Z 56 34 11 162 (SSE) 246 - " 04:09Z 56 38 10 178 (S) 325 - Partly cluded 04:41Z 54 38 13 176 (S) 380 - " 05:13Z 54 36 20 137 (SE) 305 - Mostly clear 05:45Z 52 41 17 135 (SE) 686 - " 06:17Z 52 44 14 135 (SE) 787 - " 06:50Z 53 42 10 177 (S) 686 - " 07:22Z 54 43 12 181 (S) 607 - Clear 07:54Z 55 42 13 205 (SSW) 612 - " 08:24Z 54 41 14 206 (SSW) 586 - " 08:54Z 54 40 13 205 (SSW) 527 - " 09:27Z 53 40 9 189 (S) 500 - " 09:59Z 53 40 9 181 (S) 500 - " 10:31Z 53 43 10 176 (S) 541 - " 11:07Z 52 43 11 176 (S) 547 - " 11:40Z 51 45 11 175 (S) 637 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 03:30Z Fans on, doors open 04:55Z Enclosure off 11:20Z Enclosure on, fans off Status at 11:29Z: Telescope stowed at: 30 deg Instrument mounted: Cartridge 1 Counterweights at: 270 Autofill systems: On 180L LN2 dewar weights: Spectro 230 lb Imager 297 lb Interlocks bypassed: Slip detection (velocity). ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_79_2 Watcher: v2_18_0 MCP: v5_13_0 TPM: tpm_v2_12_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: 2.6.4 sdssProcedures: v1_46 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.0840 0.0860 Axial B 0.8050 0.8050 Axial C 0.0770 0.0760 Trans D -1.5230 -1.5230 Lateral E 1.8450 1.8300 Lateral F 0.0000 0.0000 Not functioning GALILS Commanded: 5400. -3700. 900. -200. 31550. 30650. We tried issuing a 'calibLamp ff on' command and using the MCP Menu to turn on the lamps to no avail. We checked the fuses in the power supply below the PMSS panels on the NW rotating rack and they looked ok. We plugged in the FF screen/lamp override control box and that also failed to light any FF lamps, but controlled the other lamps and FF petals as expected. We also checked all the related Burndy connectors we could find and saw nothing amiss. At this point (~10:15Z) we woke French for assistance. He determined we had looked at the wrong fuses and found one blown in the power supply on the SE rotating rack. Once replaced, all worked normally. The cause of the blown fuse is unknown.
