Date: Mon, 1 Jul 2002 11:18:59 GMT From: snedden@apo.nmsu.edu (Stephanie Snedden) Subject: 2.5m obslog 20020630 (MJD 52456) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday June 30, 2002 (MJD 52456) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Pete Newman Steph Snedden Support: Peregrine McGehee (by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown - night 2 ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clouds and threat of rain kept us off the sky. Shook those items that could be done in the enclosure. Weather kept us from getting a pointing model and from shaking items that need the telescope on the sky. Tomorrow we plan to start science operations using the old pointing model with the old fiducial tables. If we see evidence that indicates we need a new pointing model, we will take one. We will also combine the remaining shakedown tasks with normal science operations. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Threat of rain and clouds kept us closed all night. We worked on shakedown items that could be done in the enclosure. Notes from preFlight checks and morning close-down. - The TEC chillers seemd a little noiser than normal with what could be a bearing beginning to whine (or could just be shakedown paranoia). I was not really able to isolate the source of the noise, except that it did not seem to be any of the south-face fans. - Az slip and Alt slip are bypassed. - We note that only one of the two grade 5 N2 bottles in the lower enclosure is hooked up to a pipe. The sign above them says that "Only one cylinder needs to be turned on". We do not know the procedure for hooking up the other bottle (e.g. what position to put the switch-over valve), or if they are both supposed to be hooked up. - A question: we note that on the 28V distribution box on the SE rotating rack, there are 6 numbered outputs. All 6 are switched on, but only 1, 2, 3 and 4 indicator lights are lit. Is this correct? - The X server on laptop sirrobert was in a strange state after the reboot of sdsshost (and may have been earlier). The "X" cursor on the screen was positioned about 1cm to the right of the effective position when a mouse button was pressed. We rebooted the laptop (log in a root and use a "shutdown -r now" command), and all was well again. Wierd. - The Az Stow Center lamp's sensor needs adjustment, as it comes on briefly as the telescope slews past azimuth ~ 123 deg, but is off when the telescope is at azimuth 121 deg. The Az Stow Range lamp seems ok. PR filed. - During close-down ~10:15Z, we noted that the Rotator Slip light was out, all others remained lit. All were found lit during preFlight checks at 01:35Z. The SDU (Slip Detection Unit) was reset at ~10:15Z. The rotator slip was also out yesterday morning as well, and was reset at that time. PR's addressed: Plate database -------------- PR 3332 - List DB version. Works. Closed. PR 3668 - Track smears. Works. Closed. PR 3915 - Track unplugged plates. Not tested. We don't know how to undo changes made using this form, so didn't want to test it. Should test at shake-up (end of this run). TPM --- PR 2851 - PMSS interface. Not tested (needs an engineer). The responsible party for this PR should be the engineers (e.g. JB), not to the observers. Can be tested during the day, too. PR 3621 - Humidity sensor I/F. This PR was changed to feedback since the new TPM display windows work as advertised, but we are not sure if more channels are to be added (if not, the PR can be closed). Note, however, that there is a discrepancy between the two dewpoint monitors on-site. A new weather PR (3973) was opened. PR 3946 - Logging weather info. The advertised channels are getting logged, but there are some gaps in the sampling. The PR state was changed to feedback, to get information on whether these gaps are expected. Also, some questions/notes: - If we set explicit scales with gScale, can we revert to auto-scaling again? If so, how? Seems like we'd need gScale -autoScale - If we should not use gScale's third parameter during a scan, then gScale should not let us use it during a scan. Likewise with the setSCDDisplayFromFlavor command. - If we cannot use the third (transformation) parameter, we cannot use the fourth (skyDetermination), too. Is that right? - The autoScale parameter is not described in the IOP web documentation for goDrift, not are the gScale or setSCDDisplayFromFlavor commands. PR 2032 - resumeStare didn't. This PR was left open, as the instructions did not work as advertised. There is no goStare -resumeStare option, but a -resume option does exist. However, the exposure failed to resume properly: sp1> goStare -resumeStare 10 Error: Syntax Error: unprocessed command line parameters remain (check for extra parameters or invalid options) ftclParseArg: Error parsing the command USAGE: goStare [expTime] -flavor -stripe -plateId -quality -bias -dark -clear -init -noread -resume -force -nowait -timing -camCheck -camAttach -keep -seq -commandBeforeRead -image -noArchive -bg -comment -ignoreUngrabbed -PTWait -help sp1> goStare -resume 10 Do not use the -resume option of goStare.
