The weather didn't help any either. Despite this, we managed to finish two plates, one of which already had exposures from previous nights. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Before opening, we change the imager dewar. We use the dewar already on the dolly, sittling outside the storage shed. We then put cartridge 8 on the telescope. When trying to move the cartridge bay to the correct height for the removal of cartridge 8, the motor began making unhappy noises and did not go where it was supposed to. We call Jon, who calls French. He instructs us in using the lift in manual mode. We then discover that the manipulator arm is also misbehaving; we suspect that it is being confused by our not getting the lift close enough to the connonical height. French then gives us instructions on putting the manipulator arm in manual mode as well. This works, but is really slow. 02:17Z We opened the enclosure On our first plate, we find the focus is very far off of that predicted by the focus/temperature relation, and were often very poor at first, then improved to about 2.4 arcseconds. Wendel arrives, and works on the cartridge bay as we get started with spectroscopy. He eventually determines that the SW mirror as just on the edge of where it should be, and that the beams were not always being reflected correctly. He should us how to fix this problem. At 04:30Z, the dust rises past closing. As one of us is closing the PT, the other is closing the enclosure. Part way to the telescope, the building halts. We try moving it in each direction, but it doesn't budge. The pannel on the building drive shows "OH". We look this up in the manual inside the box, and determine that this means the inverter is overheated. We find, however, that we are unable to clear this error. The ultimate source of the problem, we find, is that one of the absorbant pads used to mop up water around the 2.5m had gotten wrapped around the gears in the SE gear box. Calling French, we are instructed to turn of the power and wait a while. As long as we are open anyway, we opt to resume observing despite the dust (just slightly) over the closure limits. After the building has had a good long while to try again (after we finish cartridge 6), we try again, and again cannot successfuly reset the building motor. By this time, Pete has arrived, and looks at the inside of the building motion controller, and finds a tripped fuse. He resets it. After this, we can once again move the building. Unfortunately, the wheels in the stopped gear box were slipping, and not turning. Moving slowily back and forth, we manage to move the gears enough that Mike can valiantly free the remainder of the clogging material. Pete finds a grease gun, and we regrease the gears. We then mount and observe cartridge 2, plate 978. We get poor seeing, and have difficulty getting good measurements on all of the guide stars. The wind is failry string, and wildly varying in direction. We complete this plate anyway. We have significant difficulty finding focus, as the winds are strong and shifting direction wildly. We mount cartridge 3, plate 984, we the weather prevented us from doing anything useful with it. At 09:30Z, we close due to high winds. The seeing was awful anyway. At first, we remove the interlock bypass (required earlier because we were moving the building while we were trying to observe). After doing this, however, we descover we still cannot move the building (even with the telescope in the desired position). We replace the bypass and move the building over the telescope without difficulty. On closing the west door of the enclossure, we head a loud bang. The source of the bang is unknown, but we are suspicious of the blue box on the upper south corner of the west door. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3236 00:24Z 01:39Z 100 O -20.51 -1.85 139 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 15643, plate -9999 ------- 00:13 15643 0.0 bias ----- sequence 15644, plate 969 ------- 03:34 15644 10.0 flat 03:36 15645 2.0 arc 04:01 15646 22064.0 target bad 04:24 15647 1201.0 target 4.6 4.6 4.2 4.8 04:38 15648 739.0 target 2.4 2.4 2.1 2.5 SoS called for postCals, but we (attempted to) close for a dust event ----- sequence 15649, plate 790 ------- 06:05 15649 10.0 flat 06:08 15650 2.0 arc 06:26 15651 901.0 target 6.5 7.7 7.0 7.0 06:33 15652 240.0 smear ----- sequence 15653, plate 978 ------- 07:22 15653 10.0 flat 07:24 15654 2.0 arc 07:52 15655 1200.0 target 5.4 5.6 5.0 4.6 08:14 15656 1201.0 target 8.4 9.0 7.7 7.3 08:34 15657 903.0 target 5.5 6.7 5.5 5.3 08:41 15658 240.0 smear 08:43 15659 10.0 flat 08:46 15660 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:03Z 6 790 209.77 -0.0021 57.49 0.0021 52.13 0.0000 1.000440 07:35Z 2 978 278.00 -0.0004 78.21 0.0032 105.09 0.0187 1.000180 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5423 Stays: JL5424 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:16Z 7 915 1.00023 -2270 -603 20 121 30.0 24.4 21 262 2.4 06:03Z 6 790 1.00044 -4344 -2588 -150 210 57.5 17.9 8 290 1.8 07:36Z 2 978 1.00018 -1776 -526 -175 278 78.2 18.3 20 8 2.6 07:53Z 2 978 1.00017 -1678 -465 -200 274 74.6 18.5 14 7 2.3 07:59Z 2 978 1.00013 -1283 -186 -250 273 73.3 18.6 8 3 1.9 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:02Z 76 28 15 277 (W) 1396 - mostly clear 00:34Z 73 27 20 272 (W) 1051 - mostly clear 01:07Z 73 27 25 274 (W) 855 - mostly clear 01:39Z 72 27 27 281 (W) 1030 - mostly clear 02:11Z 70 27 22 257 (WSW) 908 - mostly clear 02:43Z 69 26 19 276 (W) 1087 - mostly clear 03:15Z 68 24 23 272 (W) 848 - mostly clear 03:47Z 68 25 16 267 (W) 858 - mostly clear 04:18Z 66 26 16 276 (W) 1531 - mostly clear 04:51Z 66 27 14 293 (WNW) 3287 - mostly clear 05:23Z 65 27 7 282 (WNW) 2197 - mostly clear 05:56Z 64 26 9 312 (NW) 2394 - clear 06:34Z 65 17 8 327 (NNW) 1049 - clear 07:05Z 64 15 5 339 (NNW) 1339 - clear 07:36Z 65 14 20 7 (N) 722 - clear 08:06Z 64 14 6 1 (N) 803 - clear 08:41Z 59 16 17 58 (ENE) 1142 - clear 09:13Z 54 35 23 63 (ENE) 1915 - clear 09:45Z 53 38 16 79 (E) 1576 - clear 10:17Z 53 38 31 56 (NE) 1052 - clear ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Telescope stowed at 30 deg At 10:37Z: Spectro Dewar 287 lb Imager Dewar 145.8 lb ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_79_2 Watcher: v2_18_0 MCP: v5_13_0 TPM: tpm_v2_12_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: 2.6.4 sdssProcedures: v1_4_6 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.0850 0.0860 Axial B 0.8050 0.8050 Axial C 0.0750 0.0760 Trans D -1.5270 -1.5230 Lateral E 1.8330 1.8300 Lateral F 0.0000 0.0000 GALILS Commanded: 5400. -3700. 900. -200. 31550. 30650. In summary: 1. The SE mirror of the cartridge bay came slightly disoriented, causing the elevator to misbehave. Wendell was called up; he identified the problem and trained those present in dealing with it. 2. Some of the absorbant material used to mop up water around the 2.5m got caught in the gears in the SE drive box, making the building impossible to move. After many adventures, the gear box was eventually cleaned. 3. Even after #2 was solved, the building interlock override had to be engaged to move the enclosure. 4. There was a loud bang of unknown origin on closing the west door of the enclosure.
