Light cirrus much of the night. Photometric for perhaps an hour or so but satellite images showed clouds on the way so we stayed with spectroscopy. Indeed, the clouds returned. The spectrograph focus checked out ok. Most xsigma and wsigma values were in the black tonight. However, some yellow values did start appearing toward the end of the night (cartridge 4, plate 916 and cartridge 1, plate 795). The smear routine failed in a new way and might possibly be caused by starting a smear while the guider is in the process of taking an image. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- The spectrograph focus checked out ok this afternoon. The numbers can be found in the Problems section. (Sorry Robert.) Partly cloudy at sunset so we began with spectroscopy. Plate 892 (cartridge 9): It was too bright to tell if guide stars were present on the gotoField so we used an FK5 star to acquire the field. At an elevation of 85 degrees, the pointing error was only 6 arcsecs. This plate was finished in 3 exposures even without the data from last night. Plate 838 (cartridge 8): After previous offsets were cleared, guide stars appeared. Finished in 3 exposures. The first smear failed in a new and different manner. The PR was updated (3572). See the Problems section for details. The first smear was declared bad using declareSpectroExposureBad and a second smear was taken. Plate 843 (cartridge 5): Guide stars on the gotoField. Finished in 3 exposures. Plate 844 (cartridge 6): Guide stars on the gotoField. Finished in 3 exposures. Plate 950 (cartridge 7): Guide stars on the gotoField. Finished in 3 exposures. Plate 916 (cartridge 4): Guide stars on the gotoField. Finished in 3 exposures. Plate 795 (cartridge 1): Guide stars on the gotoField. Finished in 3 exposures. A 4th exposure was taken to bring us to the end of the night. Two extra smears were taken in an effort to get smear to fail again. The last smear did fail (14571) and was declared bad. Most xsigma and wsigma values were in the black but some yellow values started to appear towards the end of the night (cartridge 4, plate 916 and cartridge 1, plate 795). No problems tonight other than the failed smear. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 14522, plate 892 ------- 23:16 14522 3.0 arc 23:18 14523 2.0 arc ----- sequence 14524, plate -9999 ------- 23:46 14524 0.0 bias ----- sequence 14525, plate 892 ------- 3.5 3.0 3.6 3.1 52377 23:55 14525 0.0 bias 15.5 15.5 15.3 17.9 tonight 02:30 14526 10.0 flat ------------------- 02:32 14527 2.0 arc 19.0 18.5 18.9 21.0 DONE 02:51 14528 900.0 target 03:12 14529 1102.0 target 03:32 14530 1001.0 target 03:39 14531 240.0 smear ----- sequence 14532, plate 838 ------- 16.8 15.4 16.5 16.8 DONE 03:55 14532 10.0 flat 03:57 14533 2.0 arc 04:15 14534 902.0 target 04:32 14535 801.0 target 04:48 14536 800.0 target 04:55 14537 240.0 smear 05:03 14538 240.0 smear ----- sequence 14539, plate 843 ------- 16.8 17.9 15.8 14.9 DONE 05:21 14539 10.0 flat 05:23 14540 2.0 arc 05:39 14541 801.0 target 05:54 14542 801.0 target 06:12 14543 902.0 target 06:19 14544 240.0 smear ----- sequence 14545, plate 844 ------- 16.1 14.8 15.3 19.4 DONE 06:33 14545 10.0 flat 06:35 14546 2.0 arc 06:51 14547 801.0 target 07:06 14548 722.0 target 07:20 14549 721.0 target 07:26 14550 240.0 smear ----- sequence 14551, plate 950 ------- 17.3 16.1 15.1 16.6 DONE 07:39 14551 10.0 flat 07:41 14552 2.0 arc 07:56 14553 720.0 target 08:10 14554 720.0 target 08:25 14555 721.0 target 08:32 14556 240.0 smear ----- sequence 14557, plate 916 ------- 18.0 15.6 16.0 16.5 DONE 08:49 14557 10.0 flat 08:51 14558 2.0 arc 09:05 14559 721.0 target 09:20 14560 721.0 target 09:43 14561 1204.0 target 09:50 14562 240.0 smear ----- sequence 14563, plate 795 ------- 19.3 20.9 24.1 24.3 DONE 10:07 14563 10.0 flat 10:09 14564 2.0 arc 10:26 14565 900.0 target 10:44 14566 901.0 target 11:01 14567 900.0 target 11:08 14568 240.0 smear 11:27 14569 901.0 target 11:33 14570 240.0 smear 11:42 14571 240.0 smear 11:45 14572 10.0 flat 11:47 14573 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:41Z 9 892 250.52 -0.0035 77.93 0.0038 78.49 -0.0005 1.000260 04:14Z 8 838 30.01 0.0020 58.81 0.0013 204.93 -0.0099 1.000210 05:31Z 5 843 8.49 0.0018 61.91 0.0011 187.11 -0.0147 1.000130 06:39Z 6 844 -24.04 0.0030 60.12 0.0023 159.87 0.0083 1.000080 07:49Z 7 950 215.65 0.0008 49.41 0.0017 71.22 -0.0102 1.000080 08:54Z 4 916 -28.51 0.0006 51.41 0.0007 156.27 -0.0219 0.999930 10:12Z 1 795 206.69 0.0012 67.26 0.0026 37.99 -0.0002 1.000170 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5247 Stays: JL5248 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:40Z 9 892 1.00026 -2566 -1185 -180 250 78.2 11.1 6 3 ---- 1.5 04:14Z 8 838 1.00021 -2073 -771 -210 30 58.9 10.5 12 20 ---- 1.9 05:35Z 5 843 1.00013 -1283 -65 -150 6 62.0 9.1 14 82 ---- 1.8 06:38Z 6 844 1.00008 -789 348 -150 -24 60.2 9.3 7 104 ---- 1.4 07:50Z 7 950 1.00008 -789 329 -200 216 49.3 9.9 1 128 ---- 1.8 08:53Z 4 916 0.99993 690 1548 -200 -28 51.5 10.1 5 208 ---- 1.1 10:12Z 1 795 1.00017 -1678 -433 -180 207 67.2 9.7 7 219 ---- 1.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:19Z 57 15 2 334 (NNW) 629 - mcl 23:50Z 60 21 9 310 (NW) 733 - mcl 00:20Z 55 16 12 327 (NNW) 768 - mcl 00:51Z 55 17 6 326 (NW) 754 - mcl 01:22Z 54 14 0 260 (W) 707 - mcl 01:53Z 53 16 2 22 (NNE) 737 - pcl 02:23Z 52 17 8 10 (N) 879 - pcl 02:53Z 49 18 11 25 (NNE) 898 - pcl 03:24Z 51 17 9 17 (NNE) 869 - pcl 03:56Z 50 16 12 19 (NNE) 808 - pcl 04:28Z 49 17 15 75 (ENE) 785 - pcl 05:01Z 48 21 14 77 (ENE) 1021 - clear 05:31Z 48 25 15 74 (ENE) 1203 - clear 06:04Z 48 27 13 91 (E) 1222 - pcl 06:35Z 48 26 6 88 (E) 1258 - pcl 07:06Z 48 25 6 107 (ESE) 1299 - clear 07:37Z 48 25 3 157 (SSE) 1243 - clear 08:10Z 49 21 1 189 (S) 1263 - clear 08:40Z 50 18 5 236 (SW) 1174 - clear 09:11Z 50 19 5 201 (SSW) 1168 - pcl 09:43Z 49 20 1 196 (SSW) 1492 - pcl 10:14Z 49 19 5 195 (SSW) 1617 - pcl 10:44Z 49 21 5 181 (S) 1733 - mcl 11:15Z 47 23 6 172 (S) 1904 - mcl 11:47Z 46 24 5 143 (SE) 1745 - pcl 12:19Z 45 26 5 106 (ESE) 1958 - pcl ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:35 Doors open, fans on 01:30 Enclosure off 11:55 Enclosure on, doors closed, fans off. It didn't fail this way when I saw it have trouble a couple nights ago. This time it issued the positional offset for the second half, then did nothing for two minutes. It then issued the velocity offset, the second guider exposure, and the clearing of the offsets all in rapid succession, as the smear began to read out. I tried again at the end of the night to cause a failure on smear. This time I purposely started the smear before the last guider exposure read out. The first smear was fine, but the second exhibited the same failure as was seen earlier in the night. There wasn't time to try more times to get a better handle on how high the failure frequency is when starting the smear with the guider running, but once in two tries, is certainly more than the 0 for 5 yesterday when the guider wasn't running at all. This is certainly a new development if the guider taking an exposure can mess up the smear. In the past the guider could even be running ( no stopGuider issued ) when the smear was taken. The guider would just stop taking guider frames while the smear was in progress and resume once it read out. For now, I would recommend making sure the last guider frame has read out before starting the smear. You can keep this from costing any time by stopping the guider 30 seconds to a minute prior to the last science exposure reading out. This way SOP will still be listening to commands before it locks you out for the read of the spectrographs, and the last 30 seconds or so of the science image will be fine without guiding updates.
