Date: Sat, 13 Apr 2002 12:08:20 GMT From: long@apo.nmsu.edu (Daniel Long) Subject: 2.5m obslog 20020412 (MJD 52377) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday April 12, 2002 (MJD 52377) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: Jurek Krzesinski Dan Long Visiting: Steve Kent Brian Lee ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Looks like another spectro night. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- It was another spectro night. It wasn't as productive as the last couple of nights due to thicker clouds. We finished two plates ( 7-910, 1-624 ) and got a little on 9-892. Even thought it was only another two plates tonight, according to Steve we have tied the record for number of plates done in a dark run with a total of 44, and New Moon was only yesterday... ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- When checking the collimation numbers for the spectrographs, the error in focus was about twice the error in the calculations, so I made a change to the focus. It asked for a piston of about 6000. I gave it 4000 since the ambient temperature at the time was about 4 C greater than the night time readings have been recently. The second collimate set gave focus errors about the size of the error bounds, so it was left this way. Note all WSIGMA and XSIGMA values were in the black tonight, so it seems that was a good guess. As ususal, the details are at the end of the log. A PR was filed regarding last night's smear problem ( SOP/3572 ). Briefly, it appears the TCC is being commanded to clear the offset with velocity immediately after issue for the second half of the smear. See the problem section for details. 01:52Z Cartridge 9 892: 3.5 3.0 3.6 3.1 Fairly thick clouds at sunset gave way to slightly thinner clouds for a while. It gave us enough time to get one half hour exposure with (S/N)^2 of around 3. Clouds got thick enough that we decided to close at about 04:45Z. They began breaking up at 06:00Z and we reopened at 06:20Z. 06:26Z Cartridge 7 910: 19.2 21.9 19.1 22.6 Guide stars on slew. Some cloud trouble. Third science exposure was below the minimum for b1 and b2. Fourth one nailed it though! 08:47Z Cartridge 1 624: 33.7 28.3 34.5 27.4 Guide stars on slew. Not much cloud trouble on this one. It was easily done in three longish exposures. We took a fourth anyway since there was some time left before twilight. We spent some time taking repeated smears into twilight in an attempt to get the smear to fail like it did last night. It didn't fail in 5 smear attempts on this plate. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3125 23:10Z 23:19Z 100 O -102.17 -100.12 27 ignore 3126 05:29Z 05:36Z 100 O -7.26 -5.36 26 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 14491, plate -9999 ------- 23:08 14491 0.0 bias ----- sequence 14492, plate 892 ------- 3.5 3.0 3.6 3.1 Rare ( Moo ) 23:49 14492 3.0 arc 23:51 14493 3.0 arc 00:05 14494 3.0 arc 00:07 14495 2.0 arc 00:21 14496 0.0 bias 02:33 14497 10.0 flat 02:35 14498 2.0 arc 03:09 14499 1800.0 target ----- sequence 14500, plate 910 ------- 19.2 21.9 19.1 22.6 Well Done 06:42 14500 10.0 flat 06:44 14501 2.0 arc 07:07 14502 900.0 target 07:21 14503 700.0 target 07:49 14504 946.0 target 08:34 14505 1503.0 target 08:41 14506 240.0 smear ----- sequence 14507, plate 624 ------- 33.7 28.3 34.5 27.4 Charcoal 08:54 14507 10.0 flat 08:56 14508 2.0 arc 09:20 14509 1201.0 target 09:47 14510 1502.0 target 10:15 14511 1500.0 target 10:22 14512 240.0 smear 10:50 14513 1501.0 target 10:53 14514 10.0 flat 10:55 14515 2.0 arc 11:02 14516 240.0 smear 11:08 14517 240.0 smear 11:18 14518 240.0 smear 11:26 14519 240.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:20Z 9 892 240.90 -0.0081 82.86 0.0042 65.24 0.0020 1.000380 06:53Z 7 910 5.51 0.0006 54.67 0.0017 184.58 -0.0220 1.000100 09:10Z 1 624 150.05 -0.0007 73.22 0.0009 -37.77 -0.0137 0.999960 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- endNight rejoyced about getting two plates done ( I guess it was happy about tying the record for number of plates done in a dark run ). It was not clear why this was until later when the TCC logs were searched. The bottom line is that the TCC is sometimes being commanded to clear the velocity offsets too soon. In talking with other observers, this is not the first time smear guider frames have come back as dots. So it appears that this is an uncommon but not isolated occurrence ( for example in last night's 7 plates, only one smear was bad ). What follows are excerpts from the TCC log for last night ( MJD 52376 ). A grep was made for "offset bore". The first entry is for a normal successful smear. Half a second between the second offset with velocity and the clearing of the offsets. This explains why the guider frame from the second half of the smear showed stars as dots rather than streaks. The TCC was told to clear the offset with velocity immediately after it started. This also explains why no error was reported. The TCC did what it was told with no difficulty. The error is apparently in SOP telling the TCC to clear the offsets too soon. Unfortunately since the commands sent by SOP to the TCC are not in the murmur log, there is no independent confirmation of this. However, it is clear the TCC was commanded by someone to clear the offsets too soon. Is it possible this is related to PR 3191 where the TCC was held long enough by SOP that it stopped tracking during a smear? Could it be a side effect of the fix implemented in either the TCC or SOP? ===================================================================== Collimate data: Ambient temp at telescope 14.1 C.
