Date: Tue, 2 Apr 2002 11:36:57 GMT From: prn@apo.nmsu.edu (Pete Newman) Subject: 2.5m obslog 20020401 (MJD 52366) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday April 1, 2002 (MJD 52366) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Steph Snedden Night: Atsuko Nitta, Pete Newman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science with standard priorities. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Two plates done and good data on two more, but otherwise limited by cloud and moon. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift log --------------- Spectrograph focus and collimation were checked, with cartridge 9 mounted and 15C truss temperature. R1 was out-of-focus by -2095. The other cameras were in spec. See the extra Spectrographs Adjustment section at the end of this log for details. More binned imager scan tests were conducted, and a failure was tripped on ad4 on the fifth scan. The details were sent to Ron Rechenmacher for analysis. Note that some disagreement with Dan's notes were found. See problem section #1 for a transcript. The site weather tower dust monitor was replaced with a newly calibrated unit today, so the standard dust-count closure conditions apply again. The mumur log date was still showing 2002-03-31 when the UT date was 2002-04-02. cleanupMurmur fixed this, but the bug may cause considerable confusion on future reading of the log files, so PR 3503 updated and raised to critical/low. Night shift log --------------- Cirrus from before sunset, so we started with spectroscopy. During preflight checks, it took several attempts to get the 60 and 90 degree alt fiducials to not give too-large errors (errors were 600). We repeated several sweeps and fiducial acceptances and saw no more problems. We had not seen problems like this for some time, so is it possibly related to cleaning the drive surfaces today? The first arc exposure (14126) did not transfer from the pool. We believe the teamster had hung or died. When another arc was taken, both transferred. The spectrograph focus and collimation were checked at T=15C. By the time we opened, ambient had dropped to T=10C, and varied between 8C and 10C all night. The WSIGMA and XSIGMA values reported by SoS remained within tolerances all night. We had another occurence of PR3402 (spectro exposure time wrongly recorded) on exposure 14138 (plate 508). PR updated. Reducers: please note! We lost several hours to thick cloud during the night, and eventually gave up around 11:20Z. endNight rejoiced. Observing sequence: 01:54Z Plate 574, cartridge 9. Done in 3 exposures. Stars found on gotoField with offsets from last night. 03:45Z Plate 508, cartridge 6. Done in 3 exposures. Stars found on gotoField with current offsets. Clouds more varied. 05:24Z Plate 577, cartridge 8. Not done with 1 good exposure and 2 ruined by clouds. Stars found on gotoField with current offsets. Clouds too thick to observe from 05:37Z until 07:28Z. 08:02Z Plate 607, cartridge 1. Not done with 1 good exposure and 4 ruined by clouds. Stars found on gotoField with current offsets. Heavy cloud stopped us from about 10:25Z. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3107 20:47Z 21:05Z 100 O -148.97 -144.42 44 ignore doghouse bias 3108 21:08Z 21:20Z 100 O -143.62 -140.54 23 engineering binned scan test 3109 21:22Z 21:31Z 100 O -140.21 -138.03 20 engineering " 3110 21:33Z 21:39Z 100 O -137.51 -135.91 19 engineering " 3111 21:42Z 21:46Z 100 O -135.23 -134.03 18 engineering " 3113 22:10Z 22:24Z 100 O -128.09 -124.74 36 ignore doghouse bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 14119, plate -9999 ------- 22:49 14119 0.0 bias ----- sequence 14120, plate 574 ------- Collimation tests - ignore 23:30 14120 3.0 arc 23:32 14121 3.0 arc 23:48 14122 3.0 arc 23:50 14123 3.0 arc ----- sequence 14124, plate -9999 ------- 00:19 14124 0.0 bias ----- sequence 14125, plate 574 ------- Focus checks - ignore 01:21 14125 10.0 flat 01:23 14126 2.0 arc 01:50 14127 2.0 arc ----- sequence 14128, plate 574 ------- 13.7 13.6 16.3 14.1 02:33 14128 10.0 flat 02:36 14129 2.0 arc 02:57 14130 900.0 target 03:15 14131 900.0 target 03:33 14132 901.0 target 03:39 14133 240.0 smear ----- sequence 14134, plate 508 ------- 16.0 14.7 18.6 14.9 03:55 14134 10.0 flat 03:57 14135 2.0 arc 04:21 14136 1200.0 target 04:44 14137 1200.0 target 05:12 14138 23837.0 target Really 1500 sec exposure (PR3402) 05:18 14139 240.0 smear ----- sequence 14140, plate 577 ------- 2.6 4.3 2.7 4.3 05:32 14140 10.0 flat 05:35 14141 2.0 arc 05:59 14142 1203.0 target USELESS 07:11 14143 1800.0 target USELESS 07:45 14144 900.0 target Useful 07:51 14145 240.0 smear 07:55 14146 10.0 flat 07:57 14147 2.0 arc ----- sequence 14148, plate 607 ------- 2.6 2.6 4.9 2.3 08:09 14148 10.0 flat 08:12 14149 2.0 arc 08:33 14150 900.0 target USELESS 09:08 14151 900.0 target Useful 10:24 14152 900.0 target USELESS 10:55 14153 901.0 target USELESS 11:03 14154 302.0 target USELESS ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:42Z 9 574 49.27 0.0014 50.67 0.0017 219.66 -0.0052 1.000280 05:00Z 6 508 10.61 0.0034 59.19 0.0022 188.89 -0.0036 1.000170 05:41Z 8 577 -21.43 0.0024 59.88 0.0025 162.03 -0.0082 1.000170 11:25Z 1 607 121.00 0.0004 29.99 0.0005 0.00 -0.0134 0.999930 (last measurement recorded after stowing telescope) ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5212 Stays: JL5219 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:42Z 9 574 1.00028 -2764 -1160 -50 49 50.7 10.9 18 242 sp 1.8 02:51Z 9 574 1.00028 -2764 -1164 -50 46 52.2 10.7 9 265 sp 1.5 05:41Z 8 577 1.00017 -1678 -387 -150 -21 59.9 9.9 16 269 sp 1.6 11:25Z 1 607 0.99993 690 1680 -150 121 30.0 7.8 10 353 sp 1.7 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Note that the weather tower dust monitor was replaced today, so the readings should be accurate and standard dust-count closure conditions should apply.
