Shake whatever remaining things to be shaken. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Imaging o We got 2hr of science imaging scan before the moon came up. o We also got UCAC scan with moon. o Skippy worked tonight on the same stripe it failed last night. o We ran skyGang on last night's data and it said that we were off for 380" in nu! Why was the pointing bad on this scan? Spectro o For cartridge 5,XSIGMA and WSIGMA are within spec despite of the fact that the temperature is similar to last night and we have made no adjustment. But cartridge 1 got yellow XSIGMA and WSIGMA. The temperature differences between the two cartridges were on the telescope is 0.2 degrees. Whatever that is causing the focus to change, it is NOT the temperature. o We finished two plates and took useless data (due to high sky background) on one plate. Telescope o One az and alt abort for unknown reasons. o We recorded the new MIG values. We declared all software we tested current. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Steph did the log archiving today. The tape is on the shelf ready to be shipped. We start with imaging to test skippy and if we are lucky, we will get science scan at the same time. 32 S -16 --------- Run 3102: The first skippy showed that the rotator and pointing were in spec. frame 28 -- in focus We stopped this run because we mistook when the twilight ends and noticed that we wil hit the science area before the twilight ends. Run 3103: frame 16 -- in focus. skippy is happy. frame 40 -- rampup begins frame 52 -- science starts (lambda -16) frame 50-70 -- teamster went on strike. We forced a new teamster to do the work. frame 275 -- lambda 17.4. Ended the drift due to moonrise. For whole run, the SoKent claimed the seeing was good (~1.3" through the run). 13 N 20 --------- We went to this stripe because skippy failed on this stripe last night. Last night's startlambda was 30. Tonight, we started at 20 because the alt position was higher (~40) compared to starting at 30 (~30). Run 3104: frame 12 -- in focus. Seeing is good according to SoKent from the first frame. skippy ran successfully and we are in spec in position and rotator. frame 68 -- lambda 29.7 We ended the drift. We have enought data to use this run as our astrometric calibration scan. The seeing got worse at the second half of this run (magenta in SoKent). Also the sky was getting brighter. We decided to to try skyGang on last night and tonight data to see if the pointing was bad. skyGang output on last night's data which skippy failed are below. Indeed, we find the nuErr to be very large (380"). Why did this happen? We have done pointing model and the spectro observing prior to imaging showed that the telescope was pointing very well. Pete checked for fiducial crossing errors in last night's murmur log but found none. Tonight's imaging data shows that the pointing has been very good from the beginning of the night. Then, why was the pointing SO bad when we tried to do imaging last night? BTW, we did try skyGang on tonight's data and the results agree with skippy's estimate of mu and nu errors. We also wish skippy failed a bit more elegantly and telling us it is failing because it cannot match up the observed and catalogue stars. astrom> skyGang 3098 41 44 1 -diff 1140 MANY Open /XWIN Cursor: o-observed (red), c-catalog (cyan), b-boresight, q-quit astrom> skyGang 3098 41 44 20 -diff 1140 MANY Open /XWIN Cursor: o-observed (red), c-catalog (cyan), b-boresight, q-quit Err = True - HDR (astrotools convention for az-el) raBoreErr: -31.7", decBoreErr: -380.4", azErr:-142.9", elErr:-375.8" raBoreErr: -31.3", decBoreErr: -380.8", azErr:-143.8", elErr:-376.0" raBoreErr: -31.5", decBoreErr: -380.1", azErr:-143.5", elErr:-375.4" raBoreErr: -31.1", decBoreErr: -380.7", azErr:-144.5", elErr:-375.8" raBoreErr: -30.6", decBoreErr: -380.7", azErr:-145.7", elErr:-375.7" raBoreErr: -31.9", decBoreErr: -379.2", azErr:-142.1", elErr:-374.6" raBoreErr: -31.0", decBoreErr: -379.6", azErr:-144.2", elErr:-374.8" raBoreErr: -30.1", decBoreErr: -379.3", azErr:-145.7", elErr:-374.2" raBoreErr: -30.2", decBoreErr: -379.3", azErr:-145.5", elErr:-374.3" -------------------------------------------------------- raBoreErr: -31.0 +- 0.6", decBoreErr: -380.0 +- 0.6" azErr: -144.2 +- 1.2", elErr: -375.2 +- 0.7" muErr: 0.3 +- 0.6", nuErr: -381.3 +- 0.6" Correct idReport boresight values: xBore = 0.23 mm, yBore = -0.02 mm. The preCalib for this plate showed that we are IN SPEC in both xsigma and wsigma at ambient temp of 7.5 degrees (from TPM's graphic display). We don't think the xsigma and wsigma being in yellow range last night has anything to do with the temperature since the temperature tonight is very similar to that of last night. The sky values for blue chips were in yellow, but we finished the plate in 4 exposures. cart 1 plate 606 ------------------ We found 6 stars on gotoField with the offsets from the previous plate. The preCalib this time found the b1 and r1 have yellow XSIGMA values and b1, r1, b2 have yellow WSIGMA values. The ambient temperature is 7.3 degrees. Whatever is causing the focus to be slightly out, it is NOT the temperature. We completed this plate in four exposures. Pete noticed that murmur log did not roll over the date to April 1. PR filed in case this is a bug and not a April Fool's joke. cart 2 plate 793 ------------------ Ten stars on gotoField with previous offsets. r1 has yellow XSIGMA and WSIGMA. Ambient temperature is 6.7 degrees. Unfortunately, BOTH science exposure we took on this plate had sky level in red for b2. So we wasted an hour (when we include instChange, preCalib, science and smear exposures). endNight rejoiced and so did we.... ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor
