Date: Sun, 31 Mar 2002 12:28:30 GMT From: prn@apo.nmsu.edu (Pete Newman) Subject: 2.5m obslog 20020330 (MJD 52364) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday March 30, 2002 (MJD 52364) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Steph Snedden Night: Atsuko Nitta, Pete Newman Support: Eric Neilsen (FNAL, by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown night 1 for the 2002 April run. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Standard shakedown items all completed: - Spectro Monthly Checkout - Fiducial table building and MCP cutting (v5_9_7, v5_11_1) - Replace PT FF bulb - Home/Relax mirrors - Pointing model (see below for details) - biasGen and biasCheck on the imager - Imager scan on the sky - Exercise spectrographs and guider - Astrometric calibration scan. We hope that the scan we did (run 3098) on strip 13N does not have too much moonlight. Steve Kent asked to check. Items remaining to be shaken: - Two PRs that failed testing. Spectro focus and/or collimation may already have drifted from yesterday's values. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Minor cumulus clouds low to E clearing before sunset with minor thin cirrus from NW after sunset. Watcher reported a transient vr error on CCD04 around 01:55Z. We saw many of the X and W sigma values flagged yellow by SoS while testing tonight. Last night (which was about 5C colder), all values were in the black. David Schlegel's shakedown notes suggest that the tolerances are, if anything, already too loose, so what does this mean? The X and W sigma values were quite repeatable between different flats/arcs on one cartridge (cartridge 1, plate 606) on a single latching of the slit heads. We tried unlatching and relatching the slit heads and took further flat/arc exposures (numbers 14092, 14093) to see if that made a difference: it did not. We tried switching to cartridge 9, which was used for the spectro monthly check-out yesterday (plate 574), and again got values flagged yellow. We tentatively conclude that a 5C warm-up is enough to start driving these measurements out of tolerance. The bad news is that this suggests we may need to adjust spectro collimation and focus more often than monthly. The good news is that SoS is telling us what is happening. David's suggestions for daily checks should probably be implemented (see the 2002 April shakedown procedures for details). We also saw what looks like a recurrence of PR3402 (wrong exposure time recorded in spectro science exposure FITS file). See that PR for details. As this makes (at the very least) a mess of the SoS sky rate values, the priority of this PR was raised from medium to high. We noticed (late) that the secondary transverse MIG (D or Y) was -0.82 mm away from the nominal value, >> +-0.05 mm tolerance. The Galil (Heidenhain) readings are good, and the imager donuts taken near the end of the night look very symmetrical and evenly illuminated. We therefore suspect the MIG has been disturbed during the recent work on the mirror actuators, and have asked Jon Brinkmann for an opinion. If this is the case, we will update the nominal values tomorrow. All other MIG readings are well within tolerance. Fiducial tables and the MCP --------------------------- New fiducial tables were built and installed to MCP v5_9_7 (current) and v5_11_1 (test). These new tables include an az fiducial that was missing in the previous table. There was also a significant change in the value for az fiducial 11. The new scale should also be more representative of the warmer temperatures we hope to have this dark run. Spectro Monthly checkout ------------------------ Spectro monthly checkout completed on MJD 52363. The sp1 blue camera needed a -6 degree focus adjustment. Sp2-blue needed a -12 degree adjustment. After all adjustments were made, the final collimator motor positions were: SP1 SP2 A=-2 A=-1117 B=0 B=-1116 C=0 C=-716 Dithered flats are in frames 14039 - 14045. Corresponding arcs are frames 14046 - 14047. It didn't have any bugs that I saw, but the focus contour plots, which I believe show Hartmann shifts in pixels for each CCD, are not too meaningful yet. We really don't know what is 'bad' yet. The plots were slightly worse than the canonical good ones David chose, but since the X & W sigmas were in spec, I assume these plots are acceptable. I guess we need to build up a history. I emailed Schlegel, asking him to have a look at the plots. biasGen / biasCheck results: im> biasCheck 3096 Directory /data/photo/52364/3096, Field 32 Select reference mjd 0. 51853 1. 51923 2. 51950 3. 51980 4. 52011 5. 52196 6. 52218 7. 52248 8. 52277 9. 52305 10. 52334 11. 52364 Select index of reference mjd [11]: 10 Writing file /astrolog/52364/idBiasCheck-003096.par CCD 11 Offset. We then shot the GRID_12_6_20_85_T_30.DAT 72-point grid. We got an altitude abort on one star too close to the 20-deg altitude limit. We also lost point 39 which was observed at 1 enclosure-mass. During this pause, we refocussed. On point 51, we got a strange TCC error message saying "slew computation did not converge in 30 iterations". See problem section #1 for details. We retried the observation and it worked fine. Fixing all parameters gave a 2.06 arcsec rms error, very consistent with the model. Around 05:05Z we moved on to on-sky spectro PR testing. Around 09:15Z we switched on on-sky imager PR testing and also obtained a UCAC astrometric calibration scan (we hope: the seeing was good, but Steve Kent has been asked to check it is acceptable as the moon was bright). We checked the changes to sdssProcedures and all looks well. endNight was run to ship the imaging run but none of the spectro test data (no useful science there). PRs tested (in PR order, not order tested) ------------------------------------------ PR 2231 => Closed. (We'd like to be able to see the SoS -extracted spectra). The apoplot procedure works nicely. Other SoS changes: we also sucessfully tested the collimate, plughistory, atvrawspec, apo_plotbias and remove2redo commands. PR 2791 => Closed. (see[ing]Run showed wrong survey longitude on x-axis.) Tested on run 2098 and it worked fine. PR 2805 => Closed. (SoS sporadically very sluggish.) Speed seems consistent now irrelevant files are no longer copied from sdsshost to sos. PR 2999 => Closed. (A requested GUI improvement to seeingRun aka SonOfKent.) The new seeingCurse is very neat! Using it needs to be added to the imaging procedures. PR 3208 => Assigned. (Need sigma about mean and telescope pointing in ltmatch and skippy outputs.) ltMatch _seems_ to be working as required (JEG: please check) but skippy fails consistently with what looks like a coding bug. See problem section #2 for a full set of error messages. PR 3470 => Closed. (Fibers used for guiding and Closed. (Coding error in dscRun environment variable "TZ" declaration.) Works in IOP version v3_74_0 and astroda v14_45. PR 3501 => Open. (skippy and ltMatch are not longer running automatically.) We opened this one when we realised that enither skippy nor ltMatch were being run by iop during a longish imaging run (run 3098). They could both be started manually, however. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3096 21:15Z 21:31Z 100 O -143.79 -139.81 41 bias IGNORE (doghouse) 3097 06:25Z 09:11Z 100 O -6.08 35.54 64 ignore (doghouse) 3098 09:30Z 10:55Z 13 N 31.88 53.24 156 calibration (astrometric) 3099 10:57Z 11:12Z 100 O 62.07 65.82 39 bias (on telescope) ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 3098, strip 13N, astrometric calibration scan in bright moonlight Frame Lambda Contents ----- ------ -------------------------------------------- 38 36.5 Start of in-focus, good-seeing data 139 51 End of science data 143 Focus +300 donut 147 Focus -300 donut (copied to /data/photo/optics/52364) ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- Skippy did not work tonight ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- 3098 41 1 24 0.518 0.210 2.453 0.235 -0.00825 3098 41 1 26 0.533 0.153 2.265 0.284 -0.00762 3098 41 1 20 0.479 0.187 2.329 0.248 -0.00783 3098 41 1 26 0.537 0.201 2.175 0.194 -0.00731 3098 41 1 23 0.512 0.221 2.185 0.263 -0.00734 3098 96 1 29 0.240 0.170 1.057 0.249 -0.00355 3098 96 1 33 0.301 0.139 0.986 0.179 -0.00331 3098 96 1 33 0.247 0.121 0.940 0.210 -0.00316 3098 96 1 28 0.229 0.121 0.778 0.211 -0.00262 3098 96 1 29 0.225 0.140 1.001 0.193 -0.00337 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 All test data, not science. Then we found the following messages from the TCC (a few minutes before 03:49Z) and the murmur errors listed afterwards about the same time. 0 0 > Started; Cmd='Track/Wait/RotWrap=Near/PtErr=(FindRef,NoLog,NoCorrect,NoObjSlew) 175.00, 85.00 Observed' 0 0 > Started; Text="pointing error sequence begins" 0 0 I Text="searching catalog for a nearby position reference star" 0 0 I TrackAdvTime=3.22 0 0 I PtRefPos = 138.788569, 0.000000, 4524262995.08000, 38.334901, 0.000000, 4524262995.08000 0 0 I AzAltDist=0.5712 0 0 I Text="slewing to pointing reference star" 0 0 F Modu="axe_SlewIter"; Text="slew computation did not converge in 30 iterations" 0 0 W Text="cannot slew one ore more critical axes"; AxisNoSlew=T,T,T; AxisErrCode="CannotCompute","CannotCompute","CannotCompute" 0 0 I AxisStop="TTT" 0 0 W Text="move failed; axes halted" 0 0 F Text="slew failed" 0 0 I TCCStatus="TTT","NNY"; TCCPos=183.40,32.63,-85.55; AxePos=183.40,32.63,-85.54 0 0 I AxisErrCode="OK","OK","OK" 0 0 I ObjNetPos = 138.788469, 0.000000, 4524263141.35028, 38.334910, 0.000000, 4524263141.35028 0 0 I ObjInstAng = 0.000000, 0.000000, 4524263141.35028 0 0 I SpiderInstAng = 179.805394, 0.036338, 4524263141.35028 0 0 I TCCStatus="HHH","NNN"; TCCPos=NaN,NaN,NaN; AxePos=183.40,32.63,-85.54 0 0 W AxisErrCode="CannotCompute","CannotCompute","CannotCompute" 0 0 I SpiderInstAng = 179.805394, 0.036338, 4524263141.35028 0 0 I TrackAdvTime=4.00 0 0 I Modu="exe_BrdTelPos"; Text="2619250 packets sent successfully" 0 0 > Started; Cmd='Track/Wait/PtErr=(NoFindRef,NoRefSlew,Log,NoCorr,NoObjSlew)' 0 0 > Started; Text="pointing error sequence begins" 0 0 I Text="integrating and scanning guide image for reference star" 0 0 F Modu="cam_i_MeasStars"; Text="one or more axes are halted" 0 0 W Text="failed to measure pointing error" 0 0 : Text="pointing error sequence finished" Mar 30 03:36:31 sdssmcp ampMgt dsc_E_trcErr MGT: bad alt state ABORT_EVENT: ID_ERROR_LIMIT Mar 30 03:36:33 sdssmcp SLC_DC dsc_E_trcErr Windscreen touched in altitude: UP Mar 30 03:37:49 sdsshost IDA 176272 TEXTONLY guiderMon found /data/spectro/guider/gimg0080.fits Mar 30 03:37:51 sdsshost IDA 542711 TEXTONLY guiderMon found /data/spectro/guider/gimg0080.fits Mar 30 03:38:29 sdssmcp ampMgt dsc_E_trcErr MGT: bad alt state ABORT_EVENT: ID_ERROR_LIMIT ------------------------------------------- Problem #2 - skippy failure While testing PR3208, we ran skippy from oip and from astrom and it failed consistently with the same error messages.
