Date: Wed, 13 Mar 2002 05:30:51 -0700 (MST) From: ank@apo.nmsu.edu (Atsuko Kleinman) Subject: 2.5m obslog 20020312 (MJD 52346) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday March 12, 2002 (MJD 52346) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Jurek Krzesinski Atsuko Nitta Mike Harvanek (swing) Scot Kleinman Eric Neilsen via phone Jon Brinkman via phone ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We started out with hardware problem (petals), then after observing one plate, we had software problem. We then moved to another hardware problem (latches not latching because of lack of air pressure) before finishing two more plates. Watcher seems to be very slow during operation the past few days. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Mike and Steph found that TPM was not logging this afternoon. Peregrine was called and the problem solved. I don't know what the problem was. False alarm on MIG values being off before sunset. Sorry Russell for disturbing you. We had a scale offset. Sorry. The sky had cirrus so we started with spectro. cart 3 plate 889 ----------------- Stars found after fk5. guiderDataWindow is so very nice. I don't know if it is possible (or worth Eric's time) to make it so that even the non-driving observer can get the info show up in the guiderDataWindow s/he runs? Currently, the non-driving observer can have the window up, but cannot get the info show up in the window. During preCalib, the petals (5, 6 in watcher, 4:00, 6:00 petal label) failed to close. Jon B. happened to be in the control room and helped us find out that the middle gear that is connected to the motor and the petal has became out of alignment and belt running between gears has come off. Jon re-adjusted the gear, tightened down the set screw that keeps the gear in its position, placed the belt in its place and the petals work as they are suppose to. We opened/closed the petals many times to make sure they work fine. We tried to abort the preCalib when we found out about the petals failing by control-C. Of course, this confused the DA and we got many error messages (please see Problem section for some sample messages) in watcher regarding wrong number of pix. We got a message asking for iack and did so on both sp1 and sp2. We took couple bias to make sure all is well before going back to operation. Right after we finished our first science exposure, we reached Alt=86.9 and we noticed that the rotator was moving fast and the guider had hard time keeping up. We waited for several minutes and when the guider was able to keep the stars down the guide fibers, we started our second science exposure. It seems that once we are down to 86.8, guider can keep the stars centered fine. Around 4:50Z, the guider frames showed stars looking like elongated donuts. This was after the second science exposure completed, before we started the third one. We went to the lower enclosure to make sure it was not a primary oscillation and it wasn't. Upon returning from the lower enclosure, we took another guider frame and the stars looked fine. We are not sure what happened. BTW, we noticed the following TCC message and didn't know what it meant. It does not seem to mean anything bad since we operated fine. Can someone enlighten us? 0 0 I GCamReply='Allocation Failure' Our preCalib flat had red number in the number of fiber column for b1. So we took a postFlat. The sky cleared during this plate so we switched to imaging. We took on-scope bias before going to the field. 30 S highest priority scan ---------------------------- We could not get the imager setup to take data before the 2.5 degrees allocated for setup time was over because the rotator didn't move and we had to do axis init and do another scanStripe command. By the time we started the drift, we wer at the science start lambda. We thought we will check on focus and skippy, then stop the scan and restart from the beginning of the requested lambda. BUT... 5:35Z Jurek's iop/sop sessions all died. This was just when he typed skippy on his iop session to check the pointing. The messages give to us by issuing ptvmeTest is in the problem section. We did ptvmeRest and restarted the servers. THen Jurek restarted all his iop session. But now we found out that skippy will not run successfully. We called Eric. skippy running from iop nor astrom will give any results. The example of the message from trying to run skippy is in the PROBLEM section. While talking to Eric, we got the Mar 12 23:14:03 sdsshost TMS 166126 dsc_E_shareLost Access to shared data area at 0x18000000 lost Mar 12 23:14:03 sdsshost TMS 166126 dsc_E_writeFail Write failed to PT icc21 CSB=0x80430010 Mar 12 23:14:03 sdsshost TMS 166126 dsc_E_writeFail Write failed to rmt=0x1828CE7C cnt=0x00002288 which means that we won't be getting gangs transferred again (like last night). We stopped our drift and tried to restart a new drift, but this time we got message about "waiting to talk to id5-2" (sorry the exact messages lost). Eric suggested we try to find out what processes are running on the nodes, but we were not able to find out how to do that easily -- so about 5min later we gave up and decided to reboot the crates. After pinging the ID nodes to make sure it is alive, we did iccExec [vmdList] statusGet daqBusy which came back with 0 for all nodes (meaning the drives are being idle as they should be). We started a new drift, and we saw the gangs getting transferred. The scolling display showed blue bands on the left edge of each chip which we did not see before. What causes these bands We tried running skippy on the new run, but failed with same errors. We decided at this point to give up on skippy, and just use ltMatch to give us rotator correction. We have the focus loop, seeingRun and watcher to give us info on the seeing. We get all info we need but the mu and nu error to check on our pointing. It turns out that ltMatch fails as well with messages in the problem section. Strange since there are ltMatch results from early part of the last run. Since the sky was photometric with good seeing, we decided to go and do spectro. Spectro photons are better than no photons. cart 5 plate 876 ----------------- Installing this cartridge turned out to be more difficult that we anticipated. We got in a state where one (ne latch) engaged and two others disengaged. We could not get all three of the latches to engage or disengage. We tried adding more/less pressure and Jurek poked with the screwed driver with no success. We thought maybe we have air pressure problem and looked at all gauges we could find. All gauges seemed fine. We then work up Jon B. Jon asked us to check a gauge in the cone under the steps leading to the cone and that said zero. The valve next to it was closed. We opened it and heard a machinegun type noise for few minutes. After it quited down, the latches worked. We noticed some very faint clouds in the east (starting around 1:15MST cloud camera image). So it was good to be doing spectro after all. We finished this plate (it had previous exposures) and went on to the next one. cart 4 plate 790 ------------------- Stars on gotoField. 1113Z Jurek spotted a mouse entering the control room. Despite Atsuko's screams and Russet and Jurek's effort, the mouse got away. We finished this plate in 3 exposures. endNight and we rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- 3033 0505Z 0520Z 100 O -43.87 -40.16 39 bias 3034 0526Z 0628Z 30 S -21.63 -5.98 118 ignore 3035 0703Z 0744Z 30 S 2.62 12.91 82 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- 3034 64 4 2 0.000 0.000 23.200 0.000 -0.10172 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ----- ----- ------- ----- ------- ------ ------- ------ --- 3034 75 1 14 0.844 0.871 5.877 5.881 -0.01976 3034 75 1 18 0.652 0.719 5.952 5.954 -0.02001 3034 75 1 15 0.601 0.683 5.917 5.922 -0.01989 3034 75 1 10 0.628 0.681 5.976 5.979 -0.02009 3034 75 1 12 0.641 0.693 6.162 6.165 -0.02072 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- ----- sequence 13806, plate 889 ------- 02:35 13806 10.0 flat 02:38 13807 0.0 bias 02:43 13808 0.0 bias 03:02 13809 10.0 flat 03:04 13810 2.0 arc 03:24 13811 900.0 target 03:46 13812 901.0 target 04:35 13813 1800.0 target 04:45 13814 240.0 smear 04:47 13815 10.0 flat ----- sequence 13816, plate 876 ------- 09:17 13816 10.0 flat 09:19 13817 2.0 arc 09:46 13818 1202.0 target 09:54 13819 240.0 smear 10:18 13820 1201.0 target ----- sequence 13821, plate 790 ------- 10:37 13821 10.0 flat 10:39 13822 2.0 arc 10:57 13823 900.0 target 11:15 13824 900.0 target 11:34 13825 900.0 target 11:41 13826 240.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- 0211Z 3 889 84.37 0.0065 73.50 0.0035 254.45 -0.0059 1.000250 1104Z 4 790 194.34 0.0043 63.43 0.0053 23.20 -0.0183 1.000170 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- To FNAL: JL5141 Stay : JL 5140 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- 19:11 3 889 1.00025 -2468 -993 -75 84 73.5 8.1 10 266 gdr 1.0" 04:04 4 790 1.00017 -1678 -395 -150 194 63.4 7.6 13 269 gdr 1.5" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- 17:35 49 6 8 305 (NW) 182 - 18:07 46 6 8 268 (W) 212 - 18:39 46 5 10 268 (W) 275 - 19:11 46 5 9 266 (W) 339 - 19:43 47 5 15 266 (W) 356 - 20:16 47 6 16 252 (WSW) 415 - 20:47 46 5 10 232 (SW) 259 - 21:20 44 7 19 235 (SW) 280 - 21:52 45 7 14 222 (SW) 238 - 22:24 45 7 13 225 (SW) 227 - 22:55 45 8 14 246 (WSW) 162 - 23:25 45 8 15 244 (WSW) 160 - 00:03 45 8 16 260 (W) 170 - 00:36 46 8 17 266 (W) 174 - 01:08 45 7 15 298 (WNW) 169 - 01:40 45 7 11 266 (W) 186 - 02:13 45 6 14 273 (W) 230 - 02:45 45 6 19 294 (WNW) 228 - 03:15 45 5 16 290 (WNW) 228 - 03:46 45 5 15 290 (WNW) 245 - 04:16 45 5 22 297 (WNW) 198 - 04:49 45 5 19 292 (WNW) 228 - 05:21 44 5 10 301 (WNW) 256 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:00Z Fans on. 1:05Z Enclosure off. 11:55 Enclosure on, fans off Telescope at stow with cart 1, plate 873 on.
