Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2002 05:20:26 -0700 (MST) From: neilsen@apo.nmsu.edu (Eric Neilsen) Subject: 2.5m obslog 20020219 (MJD 52326) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday February 20, 2002 (MJD 52326) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Eric Neilsen Atsuko Nitta Jurek Krzesinski (day) Scot Kleinman Russell Owen ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We start with special plates (photo-z and star cluster) at the beginning of the night because no regular survey plates are available. The remainder of the night was spent fighting clouds to finally complete 2 plates. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- We open at 0100Z. The sky is mostly clear. At 0200Z, we change the imager dewar. The cloud camera is giving us some trouble; we are getting strange looking (mostly black) images. After jiggling a loose data cable on the camera, the images returned to usual. We find that (despite little change in temperature of air or mirror) the optimum focus is changing rapidly. We begin with the photo-z plate (plate 810). We accumulate some more signal, but do not achieve a (S/N)^2 of 30 needed to finish the plate. We came close though (r1 and r2 have accumulated (S/N)^2 of 17.4 and 30.0). We then move on to plate 801, a star cluster plate. Some clouds can be seen in the cloud camera in the north east. We are pointing west, and they can only be seen in a couple of frames, so the exposures should be okay. Around 0445Z, after we finished the second smear of the second pointing, the axis halted. The message given in sop is in the prblem section. I was not paying enough attention to see if the axis halted before the smear exposure ended. SOP was caught up in doing a smear and probably could not have given the warning before it finished the smear. We did not get a message saying "smear failed", the sop message looked as if smear was carried out fine. However, the associated the watcher error timestamp indicates that the axis halted while the second smear was on-going. We therefore took additional smear. During another smear, we get a rotator max acceleration error from watcher. We note that the setup time for the star cluster plate is much, much longer than in normal plates, because there are so few guide stars on any given pointing. After mounting and observing on a regular plate, we discover that SoS is very bogged down doing the smears from the cluster plate. We do nto see any easy way to tell SoS to skip these and go on. To keep SoS from reducing all these flats, we move the images out of /data/spectro and erase them from SoS. During plate 521 science exposure, we tried to pause the exposure when there was none going on by accident and confused sop. Doing endStare on command line was necessary since the endStare from GUI didn't work: endStare prompts the user, but cannot get a response when invoked from the GUI. We were interupted by clouds, but they eventually dispersed, and we were able to take additional data before closing again at 1145Z due to clouds. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2998 2231Z 2249Z 100 O -162.29 -157.81 44 ignore 2999 0013Z 0029Z 100 O -136.61 -132.83 39 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 13399, plate -9999 ------- 22:33 13399 0.0 bias 00:16 13400 0.0 bias ----- sequence 13401, plate 810 ------- 02:11 13401 10.0 flat 02:13 13402 2.0 arc 02:32 13403 901.0 target 1.6 2.0 2.1 3.5 03:05 13404 1803.0 target 4.1 4.1 4.9 7.5 03:11 13405 240.0 smear ----- sequence 13406, plate 801 ------- 03:25 13406 10.0 flat 03:27 13407 2.0 arc 03:49 13408 600.0 smear 04:02 13409 600.0 smear 04:15 13410 600.0 smear 04:30 13411 450.0 smear 04:40 13412 450.0 smear 04:55 13413 450.0 smear 05:05 13414 450.0 smear 05:30 13415 60.0 smear 05:34 13416 60.0 smear 05:37 13417 60.0 smear 05:44 13418 6.0 smear 05:46 13419 6.0 smear 05:49 13420 6.0 smear 06:02 13421 330.0 smear ----- sequence 13422, plate 835 ------- 06:20 13422 10.0 flat 06:22 13423 2.0 arc 06:44 13424 901.0 target 3.8 4.9 3.8 4.0 07:16 13425 901.0 target 3.9 4.9 3.6 3.8 07:34 13426 901.0 target 3.9 4.6 3.8 3.8 07:56 13427 1200.0 target 6.0 6.7 6.2 5.9 08:03 13428 240.0 smear ----- sequence 13429, plate 521 ------- 08:20 13429 10.0 flat 08:22 13430 2.0 arc 09:15 13431 1801.0 target 6.7 5.9 7.0 5.4 ----- sequence 13432, plate 784 ------- 09:45 13432 10.0 flat 09:48 13433 2.0 arc 10:16 13434 1500.0 target 11.5 8.7 12.0 9.3 10:34 13435 903.0 target 1.2 1.0 1.2 0.9 11:04 13436 1502.0 target 4.4 3.0 4.4 2.9 11:37 13437 1800.0 target 0.0 0.1 0.0 0.1 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 0258Z 1 810 -53.63 0.0014 42.76 0.0027 137.35 -0.0098 1.000000 0337Z 3 801 -55.44 0.0032 64.87 0.0023 133.67 -0.0046 0.999950 0412Z 3 801 -66.97 0.0032 58.32 0.0023 126.07 -0.0046 0.999950 0420Z 3 801 -69.20 0.0025 56.64 0.0023 124.81 -0.0046 0.999950 0638Z 6 835 43.73 0.0013 54.08 0.0010 215.63 -0.0063 1.000100 0951Z 2 784 173.62 -0.0027 60.61 0.0008 -11.33 -0.0233 1.000100 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5061 Stays: JL5061 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 17:18 1 810 1.00000 0 1257 0 121 30.0 3.3 7 352 19:58 1 810 1.00000 0 1105 -100 -54 42.8 3.2 7 308 21:12 3 801 0.99995 493 1465 -100 -67 58.3 3.4 8 2 23:39 6 835 1.00010 -986 301 -50 44 54.1 2.3 12 326 1.9 02:51 2 784 1.00010 -986 383 50 174 60.6 -0.1 9 336 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 15:38 38 15 14 301 (WNW) 123 - clear 16:14 38 16 15 321 (NW) 110 - " 16:46 37 16 8 321 (NW) 120 - " 17:17 38 16 9 272 (W) 139 - " 17:50 37 17 9 300 (WNW) 133 - " 18:22 37 16 10 281 (W) 115 - " 18:54 37 16 15 293 (WNW) 131 - " 19:26 37 16 10 288 (WNW) 219 - " 19:58 37 16 6 307 (NW) 251 - " 20:28 37 17 8 4 (N) 346 - partly cloudy 21:03 38 17 6 356 (NNW) 236 - clear 21:36 37 18 0 118 (ESE) 214 - partly cloudy 22:10 36 18 5 326 (NW) 242 - " 22:41 36 18 6 323 (NW) 146 - " 23:12 36 18 15 315 (NW) 119 - clear 23:45 35 19 10 321 (NW) 120 - partly cloudy 00:17 35 19 9 300 (WNW) 111 - " 00:50 34 19 19 300 (WNW) 134 - " 01:22 33 20 14 314 (NW) 93 - mostly cloudy 01:54 33 19 7 336 (NNW) 120 - partly cloudy 02:26 32 20 9 329 (NNW) 145 - " 02:57 31 18 12 359 (NNW) 131 - " 03:30 31 21 11 32 (NNE) 125 - mostly cloudy 04:03 30 21 7 11 (N) 109 - cloudy 04:35 30 21 13 314 (NW) 96 - " 05:07 29 21 23 351 (NNW) 98 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Telescope stowed at 30 degrees, cartridge installed. spectrograph dewar 1206Z Dewar wt 232.6 lb imager dewar 1206Z Dewar wt 213.6 lb The exhaust fan box alarm is on this morning. ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_66_5a Watcher: v2_15_0 MCP: v5_9_6 TPM: v2_4_7 AstroDa: v14_36 TCC: 2.6 sdssProcedures: v1_39 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.0820 0.0750 Axial B 0.7970 0.8020 Axial C 0.0680 0.0710 Trans D -1.5200 -1.4860 Lateral E 1.8800 1.8540 Lateral F 1.4430 1.4240 GALILS Commanded: 5400. -3700. 900. -200. 31550. 30650.
