Date: Fri, 15 Feb 2002 06:05:57 -0700 (MST) From: prn@apo.nmsu.edu (Pete Newman) Subject: 2.5m obslog 20020214 (MJD 52320) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday February 14, 2002 (MJD 52320) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Jurek Krzesinski Night: Mike Harvanek, Pete Newman Visitor: Gabriela Mollen-Ornelas (Princeton) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science with standard priorities. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Four standard plates finished (777, 782, 787, 864) plus good data on a photo-z plate (810) under variably cloudy skies. A neon calibration lamp that failed intermittently (see PR3211) and known software bugs were the only problems during observing, but a last minute TCC/MCP error kept us interested. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Variable high and orographic cloud from before sunset, so we started with spectroscopy. We closed for ~ 2hr around 0500Z under heavy cloud, then re-opened in a prolonged sucker hole in a large weather system coming from the west. Ne lamp#4 (as numbered by counterweight position, #1 in the MCP System Status panel) failed aroudn 0749Z during preCalibs for plate 864. We missed a prompt from preCalib about this and lost a few minutes until we found the -nlamp option on preCalib to override it, and also realised the the SOPGUI messes up this prompt from preCalib. We needed to use: preCalib 0 1 -nlamp 3 to get an arc on 3 lamps without a flat (the first flat was ok). SoS reported 39 red arc lines (as normal) but warned about the number of lamps on. PR3211 opened (French was already aware of the problem). We contined with 3 Ne lamps for the rest of the night. endNight is running as this is being written. When moving to 121,30 before closing, the TCC and MCP threw errors (harumph!). See Problems section for details. Observing sequence: 0127Z Plate 810, cartridge 1. Photo-z plate. Not finished in 3 exposures, but good signal on all cameras under variable cloud. Found FK5 star before twilight ended. startGuider failed in its "shSubRegNew: subregion row/col out of bounds" mode after the preCalib flat-field exposure, so we switched to the -simple mode and proceeded. PR 1601 re-opened (was suspended, this _may_ be PR1578). Smear taken under variable cloud and postCals started as the smear ended before the last science exposure was reduced. Another smear under better conditions would be good. 0333Z Plate 864, cartridge 9. Done in 4 exposures (1st useless). Guide stars on gotoField with offsets from previous plate. Several hours lost to cloud. When we reopened, the telescope was in the NW (Az=250, Alt=68) and needed an FK5 star to recenter (see offsets section). 0902Z Plate 777, cartridge 5. Done in 3 exposures. FK5 needed. 1024Z Plate 782, cartridge 2. Done in 3 exposures. Stars on gotoField. 1143Z Plate 787, cartridge 4. Done in 3 exposures. Stars on gotoField. ---=== IMAGING SUMMARY===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2991 2235Z 2326Z 100 O -167.15 -154.31 83 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 23:53 13215 0.0 bias ----- sequence 13216, plate 810 ------- 16.6 11.3 19.0 19.0 NOT DONE! 02:02 13216 10.0 flat 02:05 13217 2.0 arc 02:31 13218 1200.0 target 02:54 13219 1200.0 target 03:17 13220 1200.0 target 03:23 13221 240.0 smear 03:26 13222 10.0 flat 03:28 13223 2.0 arc ----- sequence 13224, plate 864 ------- 19.5 17.2 16.7 19.2 03:48 13224 10.0 flat 03:50 13225 2.0 arc 04:17 13226 1200.0 target 07:48 13227 10.0 flat 07:55 13228 2.0 arc 08:14 13229 900.0 target 08:32 13230 901.0 target 08:50 13231 900.0 target 08:56 13232 240.0 smear ----- sequence 13233, plate 777 ------- 20.7 21.4 20.4 21.7 09:17 13233 10.0 flat 09:21 13234 2.0 arc 09:40 13235 901.0 target 09:58 13236 901.0 target 10:13 13237 723.0 target 10:19 13238 240.0 smear ----- sequence 13239, plate 782 ------- 18.4 15.2 21.3 19.6 10:30 13239 10.0 flat 10:32 13240 2.0 arc 10:47 13241 750.0 target 11:05 13242 902.0 target 11:23 13243 902.0 target 11:29 13244 240.0 smear ----- sequence 13245, plate 787 ------- 16.0 16.4 17.9 14.4 11:40 13245 10.0 flat 11:42 13246 2.0 arc 11:58 13247 800.0 target 12:18 13248 1002.0 target 12:24 13249 240.0 smear 12:41 13250 801.0 target 12:44 13251 10.0 flat 12:46 13252 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 0214Z 1 810 -32.90 -0.0010 52.57 0.0023 152.80 -0.0238 1.000000 0449Z 9 864 109.67 -0.0044 74.35 0.0017 -80.48 -0.0131 1.000290 0758Z 9 864 252.32 -0.0015 66.00 0.0054 89.04 -0.0131 1.000290 0951Z 5 777 188.56 -0.0047 59.80 0.0041 15.73 -0.0362 1.000090 1039Z 2 782 185.15 -0.0046 60.05 0.0026 9.49 -0.0262 1.000090 1145Z 4 787 186.46 -0.0064 62.10 0.0033 11.09 -0.0216 1.000090 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5052 Stays: JL5053 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 19:14 1 810 1.00000 0 1173 0 -33 52.6 2.1 17 220 spec 1.7 21:48 9 864 1.00029 -2863 -1346 -100 110 74.3 2.7 11 268 spec 2.0 00:58 9 864 1.00029 -2863 -1332 -100 252 66.0 2.0 18 298 spec 1.4 02:51 5 777 1.00009 -888 342 -75 189 59.8 1.0 2 0 spec 1.7 03:39 2 782 1.00009 -888 342 -75 185 60.1 1.0 12 16 spec 1.7 04:45 4 787 1.00009 -888 337 -75 186 62.1 0.4 19 23 spec 1.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 15:58 41 15 11 245 (WSW) 525 - Variable cloud 16:34 37 14 12 265 (W) 566 - " 17:05 38 14 15 244 (WSW) 651 - " 17:37 37 13 12 257 (WSW) 659 - " 18:10 35 14 12 233 (SW) 603 - " 18:41 35 14 18 205 (SSW) 653 - " 19:11 35 14 13 207 (SSW) 709 - " 19:42 35 12 19 239 (WSW) 656 - " 20:15 36 9 20 227 (SW) 580 - " 20:48 37 4 18 267 (W) 471 - " 21:21 37 2 19 261 (W) 535 - Thick cloud 21:52 37 2 13 255 (WSW) 541 - " 22:24 37 2 12 236 (SW) 494 - " 22:57 36 1 13 271 (W) 436 - " 23:29 36 2 17 296 (WNW) 429 - " 00:01 36 1 7 268 (W) 378 - Variable cloud 00:33 36 1 8 314 (NW) 390 - " 01:04 35 2 9 336 (NNW) 259 - " 01:37 34 5 11 337 (NNW) 250 - Little cloud 02:09 34 3 7 343 (NNW) 318 - " 02:42 33 3 13 352 (NNW) 414 - " 03:13 33 5 14 348 (NNW) 405 - " 03:45 34 7 13 9 (N) 357 - Thin cloud 04:18 33 10 17 334 (NNW) 372 - " 04:51 33 11 8 2 (N) 430 - " 05:25 32 11 11 355 (NNW) 474 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Time 2300Z Fans on. 0050Z Enclosure off. 0500Z (approx) Enclosure on due to cloud threat) 0730Z Enclosure off 1300Z Enclosure on, fans off.
