A smear failed in the same mode PR3183 - requested debugging info sent to Russell Owen - but a repeat worked. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Variable cloud from before sunset through the night, so spectroscopy. The right-hand +15V CCD power supply on sp2 is showing a red light and reading 97.0 (per cent?). Did not affect the biases, which looked good, but we emailed Jon Brinkman to check if the PSU is abnormal. We observed plate 860 through 87 degrees altitude without any tracking problems. Can the 'zenith avoidance' criteria be relaxed slightly? We emailed Steve Kent to ask. The smear on the last plate failed (around 1232Z) in the same failure mode as recent nights. Dan emailed Russell the information he requested if this happened (see http://www.astro.princeton.edu:81/sdss-controls/msg.677.html and PR3183). As this is voluminous and of interest to Russell alone, we did NOT include the output in the problems section below. The repeat smear worked. endNight rejoiced. Observing sequence 0031Z Plate 860, cartridge 9. Done in 8 exposures, but the last three alone are more enough and the rest had much cloud. Do not use the first smear. Guide stars found with zero offsets, and seeing exceptionally good (< 1.2 arcsec at times). Science started a little before the plate design time. Clouds got thicker by the end of the second exposure, so we logged time to clouds but continued trying to get signal. Exposures 3, 4, 5 had at least one camera with (S/N)^2. Exposures 6, 7, 8 had good signal as a nice sucker hole passed over. 0655Z Plate 575, cartridge 8. Done in 3 exposures. All guide stars found on gotoField. Seeing continued excellent, as did the sucker hole. 0813Z Plate 776, cartridge 5. Done in 6 exposures (2 useless). Smear not in photometric conditions. No guide stars on gotoField, but FK5 glow seen just off fiber (this plate is in the NE). Clouds highly variable. 1109Z Plate 786, cartridge 4. Done in spade in 3 exposures. Stars found on gotoField with offsets from last plate (this one also in NE). First smear failed (see notes above), but a simple repeat worked. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2990 2224Z 2240Z 100 O -170.91 -166.90 41 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 13175, plate 860 ------- 32.7 22.9 29.8 24.5 (but see below) 01:11 13175 0.0 bias 01:51 13176 10.0 flat 01:53 13177 2.0 arc 02:19 13178 1201.0 target good 02:47 13179 1502.0 target marginal 03:20 13180 1801.0 target r1, r2 too weak 03:27 13181 240.0 smear poor - do not use 04:13 13182 2400.0 target all cameras too weak 05:11 13183 2003.0 target r1 too weak 05:14 13184 10.0 flat 05:16 13185 2.0 arc 05:57 13186 2000.0 target good 4.2 3.2 4.0 2.8 06:19 13187 1200.0 target good 8.3 7.3 7.8 7.9 06:37 13188 902.0 target good 6.6 6.7 5.9 6.3 06:44 13189 240.0 smear good - use this one. 06:47 13190 10.0 flat 06:49 13191 2.0 arc ----- sequence 13192, plate 575 ------- 14.9 14.6 16.6 16.1 07:04 13192 10.0 flat 07:06 13193 2.0 arc 07:24 13194 901.0 target good 07:42 13195 901.0 target good 08:01 13196 1003.0 target good 08:08 13197 240.0 smear ----- sequence 13198, plate 776 ------- 18.5 17.4 18.8 18.4 08:23 13198 10.0 flat 08:25 13199 2.0 arc 08:48 13200 1201.0 target useless 09:29 13201 1502.0 target good 09:56 13202 1500.0 target useless 10:24 13203 1501.0 target good 10:42 13204 902.0 target good 10:57 13205 725.0 target good 11:04 13206 240.0 smear not photmetric ----- sequence 13207, plate 786 ------- 32.9 23.1 29.9 24.0 11:14 13207 10.0 flat 11:16 13208 2.0 arc 11:39 13209 1203.0 target good 12:03 13210 1201.0 target good 12:25 13211 1200.0 target good 12:32 13212 240.0 smear bad - slews failed - do not use. 12:44 13213 240.0 smear good ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 0225Z 9 860 98.33 -0.0004 50.40 0.0008 253.17 0.0000 1.000300 0709Z 8 575 20.15 0.0001 59.84 0.0010 196.85 -0.0080 1.000030 0823Z 5 776 170.81 -0.0072 59.97 0.0024 -16.60 -0.0080 1.000060 1131Z 4 786 185.02 -0.0074 61.63 0.0018 8.78 -0.0228 1.000020 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5049 Stays: JL5050 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 18:24 9 860 1.00000 0 1226 0 104 37.8 0.6 4 277 spec 1.3 18:47 9 860 1.00036 -3554 -1785 -50 102 42.5 0.8 5 273 spec 1.3 19:25 9 860 1.00030 -2961 -1322 -50 98 50.4 1.2 6 264 spec 1.1 00:09 8 575 1.00003 -296 858 -50 20 59.8 -0.5 9 201 spec 1.1 01:23 5 776 1.00006 -591 612 -50 171 60.0 -1.3 9 202 spec 1.3 04:31 4 786 1.00002 -198 935 -50 185 61.6 -2.0 16 234 spec 1.6 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 15:36 34 13 9 209 (SSW) 816 - Thin overcast 16:08 33 14 7 198 (SSW) 777 - " 16:41 34 12 3 177 (S) 740 - " 17:13 34 1 1 191 (S) 229 - " 17:45 33 0 1 203 (SSW) 287 - Thicker cloud 18:17 31 2 4 265 (W) 308 - " 18:47 33 7 4 273 (W) 413 - " 19:18 34 5 4 222 (SW) 376 - " 19:49 34 4 7 265 (W) 363 - " 20:21 35 6 6 276 (W) 328 - " 20:52 34 5 7 237 (WSW) 313 - " 21:22 33 8 7 217 (SW) 349 - " 21:54 32 10 7 224 (SW) 353 - " 22:25 32 9 7 213 (SSW) 410 - " 22:57 32 11 5 203 (SSW) 442 - Clearing rapidly 23:30 31 10 6 243 (WSW) 503 - Patchy cloud 00:03 31 11 13 209 (SSW) 556 - " 00:35 30 9 11 207 (SSW) 593 - " 01:08 30 10 10 200 (SSW) 739 - Thicker cloud 01:38 29 8 10 182 (S) 645 - 02:10 29 9 15 203 (SSW) 640 - Variable cloud 02:41 29 9 9 252 (WSW) 716 - " 03:11 29 9 15 215 (SW) 636 - " 03:44 29 12 12 213 (SSW) 775 - " 04:17 28 16 12 231 (SW) 842 - " 04:49 28 17 12 238 (WSW) 1034 - " 05:19 29 17 15 243 (WSW) 1112 - " 05:54 29 17 14 254 (WSW) 975 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Time 0000Z Fans on. 0050Z Enclosure off. 1300Z Enclosure on, fans off.
