Pointing model. Based on cloud cover & other considerations, we chose to delay imager shake until next twilight. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clouds and ice caused observing and enclosure problems. In spite of this, we did get a good pointing model. As the I Ching says, "perseverance furthers". ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Fiducial tables: Since the bad rotator fiducial cannot be accessed until bright time, we chose to use last month's fiducial tables for this dark run. This should not be a problem, since last month's and this month's tables are very much the same (1.4 asec difference at worst in alt & az. Most differences were less than 1 asec), except for the bad rotator fiducial in this month's data. Pre-flight check went without problems. We set up for a pointing model with the engineering camera. Pointing model: Grid used: GRID_9_8_27_88_T_30.DAT;1 Best focus at start: -100 The first point in the model caused dopterr to fail. See the problems section for the details. Running it a second time, everything worked. 0156Z Clouds got thicker & became a problem. We needed several retries to acquire some of our stars. 2002-02-02T02:02:02Z - Just felt that we REALLY needed to have this time stamp in the log. 0204Z Clouded out. 0221Z Removed the neutral-density filter, which allowed us to acquire FK5 stars through the cloud cover. We proceeded with the pointing model. It was still a painful process, requiring us to change exposure times often as the cloud cover varied. Point 36 needed to be removed from the model (should be the 34th entry in the table). dopterr centroided on something that was not the FK5 star. 0315Z Clouds became opaque enough that we decided to close. Stopped at point 39 in the model. 0413Z Clouds thinning. Went to open, but the enclosure would not move. Ice had caused a short at the rail (see problems section). 0522Z Thanks to French, we were back on the sky and resumed the pointing model. Put the neutral-density filter back on, then took it back off again as the cloud cover increased again. Note that points 39-51 had the rotator at 0 degrees mount coordinates, not 0 degrees horizon coordinates. This didn't affect the results. The model results came out to 1.54 asec RMS (internal error - see below). We then tried to redo the same grid to check the model (the clouds were too thick for spectroscopy, so we took no efficiency hit). The seeing deteriorated during this time, to the point where pterr had trouble finding centroids, but we were able to finish. The second model agreed with the first to within 2.05 asec RMS. When the building motion switch was turned on, the building motion alarm sounded, then the ODH display flashed, the ODH alarm sounded briefly and that's all. French was called in and found unusual voltages at the rail. Some derring-do by French (he used a safety harness) found an ice bridge between the 2nd & 3rd slider arms of the rail that was causing a short. He knocked out the ice and we were back in business.
