Date: Wed, 22 Aug 2001 06:48:38 -0600 From: Dan Long Subject: 2.5m obslog 20010821 (MJD 52143) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday August 21, 2001 (MJD 52143) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Daniel Long Pete Newman Mike Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Trouble with clouds and some software/hardware glitches cut into our time, but we still got two plates done. Observed plates 627, 376, and 650. 376 and 650 declared done. Possible problem with fiber 10 coordinates on plate 627. Use fiber 11 to center up. First FK5 issued per plate doesn't work right. Sometimes uses previous plates FK5 star, sometimes doesn't slew at all. Imager voltages went bad when dewar 6's -15V supply flaked out. Supply was power cycled, came up OK. However it took a cc cold to get the camera to show all voltages OK. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- During the afternoon checkout, the balance was adjusted. Cartridge + Corrector is now ~270 ( was 230 ). Front/back balance was fine today. M2 axis E homed. Focus/collimation updates worked error free for about 5 minutes afterwards, then full step error resumed. 72 point model being used now. We started out with cartridge 1 plate 627. With some difficulty we got an FK5 star to show up in fiber 10. When we went to the field there were no guide stars present. A couple iterations of offsets and rotations were tried, but we couldn't get guide stars. We then put the FK5 in fiber 11 and it was nearly out of the field ( it had just been centered in fiber 10 ). We centered up on fiber 11, and there were guide stars in 4 fibers. A similar problem occurred on 52135, where no star could be found in fiber 10 with either pointing model even using a 30" spiral pattern. In that case another cartridge was tried after that. Is it possible guide fiber 10 on plate 627 has incorrect coordinates in the plate file, even though it is drilled correctly? This would account for not being able to find an FK5 star when offset to its coordinates, but that when the plate is properly centered, the guide star appears. Could someone check on this? If you discount the difficulty with fiber 10 on plate 627, the pointing tonight was excellent. Pointing errors were about 6 arcseconds for plate 627, and less than 3 arcseconds for all the rest. Clouds began interfering with data at 21:50 ( during second science exposure ) We waited for the clouds to thin then put 4 376 on around 23:25. When no guide stars were found a slew to FK5 was issued. The telescope then slewed to the previous fk5 coordinates ( on the first cartridge ). This was around 23:40 ( 998458761 ). The second attempt at gotoField then FK5 worked. See the problem section for the list of commands sent to the TCC at this time. This behavior was also observed on 52135. Also see PR 2586. At about 02:00 Pete's SOP session hung during the 3rd exposure on plate 650. The guider stopped updating and when he tried to get out of a sopGUI dialog for changing the exposure time all sopGUI windows went away. A short time later one more guider update appeared, then the saoImage window disappeared. At this point a new sop session was started. It was found the ports had already been released so they didn't need to be logged out to get the new sop session to talk to the spectrographs. Unfortunately the new sop session locked up as well. During all this Landru was running very slowly. When a Java applet was quit things speeded up again. The third attempt at restarting sop worked. At 3:20 dewars 1 and 2 on the imager complained about their voltages being out of spec. It was dewar 6's -15 supply which was bad. It was power cycled. Shortly after we came back up and started on the next cartridge, the voltages in dewar 4 went bad. A check of the power supplies showed everything in spec. All power supplies were fine. Thinking maybe the micro had got confused by the first problem with dewar 6's supply, we issued a cc cold and then iacked. When a camcheck was issued this time, all was OK. As a test we tried an FK5 on cartridge 3 plate 663, and the first time it didn't send the track command after the track/pterr, so the telescope didn't move. Another FK5 was issued and it worked. It seems that the first FK5 issued for a given plate fails, but subsequent ones work. The first one either goes to the previous FK5 or does nothing at all. This information was added to PR 2586. At about 04:00 Landru crashed. This was while we were waiting on clouds and dealing with the imager voltage problems. At about 04:15 we decided to call it a night as it was apparent the clouds were going to be around until at least twilight. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2502 100 O ignore 30.48 36.45 53 ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 00:18 10608 0.0 bias {{}} ----- sequence 10609, plate 627 ------- 6.0 5.1 10.5 7.3 03:09 10609 10.0 flat pre-flat 03:11 10610 2.0 arc pre-arc 03:35 10611 901.0 target science 03:52 10612 900.0 target science ----- sequence 10613, plate 376 ------- 22.7 15.4 21.5 17.6 05:50 10613 10.0 flat pre-flat 05:52 10614 2.0 arc pre-arc 06:16 10615 900.0 target science 06:33 10616 900.0 target science 06:40 10617 240.0 smear {{Smear Pattern}} 06:53 10618 601.0 target science 06:56 10619 10.0 flat post-flat 06:59 10620 2.0 arc post-arc ----- sequence 10621, plate 650 ------- 20.0 12.9 18.7 15.0 07:12 10621 10.0 flat pre-flat 07:14 10622 2.0 arc pre-arc 07:37 10623 900.0 target science 07:54 10624 900.0 target science 08:19 10625 0.0 bias science {{}} ----- sequence 10626, plate -9999 ------- 08:29 10626 0.0 bias {{}} ----- sequence 10627, plate 650 ------- 08:49 10627 659.0 target science 09:05 10628 602.0 target science 09:12 10629 240.0 smear {{Smear Pattern}} 09:32 10630 901.0 target science ----- sequence 10631, plate 663 ------- 10:14 10631 10.0 flat pre-flat ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- getclock Axis position and calibration offset Scale Time Ct Plate time Az El Rot Factor 21:21 1 627 998450573 227.36 -.0046 65.29 .0004 64.71 -.0016 0.999960 23:59 4 376 998459990 37.66 -.0009 50.80 -.0006 210.85 .0141 0.999990 01:23 5 650 998464991 32.30 -.0003 41.54 -.0002 207.05 -.0135 0.999910 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- sidereal time Plate Telescope Tele - Plate " Time Ct Plate deg RA Dec RA Dec RA Dec 21:21 1 627 275 248.9912 46.8401 248.9929 46.8416 6.1 5.4 23:59 4 376 315 337.5379 -0.0385 337.5377 -0.0393 -0.7 -2.9 01:23 5 650 335 0.2275 -9.9398 0.2274 -9.9400 -0.1 -0.7 ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL4297 Stays: JL4298 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 21:18 1 627 0.99996 394 1336 -130 226 66.1 12.4 2 189 - 1.6 00:01 4 376 0.99999 99 1070 -190 37 50.9 13.0 5 205 - 1.3 00:45 4 376 0.99996 394 1301 -190 20 55.5 12.1 8 259 - 1.4 01:21 5 650 0.99991 888 1708 -240 34 41.0 12.7 7 244 - 1.4 01:59 5 650 0.99988 1184 1940 -240 22 44.8 12.1 5 256 - 1.3 02:42 5 650 0.99984 1579 2259 -240 7 47.0 13.4 6 252 - 1.2 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Boughts of high and mid-level clouds during the night.
