Imaging as priority, then spectroscopy. OBSERVING SUMMARY ================= Closed by weather until 22:30. Plate 628, cartridge 9, almost completed, then closed by weather again from 01:00. OBSERVERS' LOG ============== During preflight checks, we fixed the reversal of the spectrograph monitors, which apparently had been round the wrong way since the new video cards were installed in 2000 December(!). In trying to check out which monitor was showing which spectrograph cameras, we confused the DA by switching activeInstruments to sp1 in an iop window then using readoutAbort. This stopped id6, leaving the other dewars running and triggering a flurry of 'wrong number of pixels' errors. We think iop shold not allow activeInstruments to change from im to sp* (and sop from sp* to im), so a PR (iop/2474) was filed. In the process, we discovered that if we try to readout a single spectrograph camera (e.g. by setting activeInstruments sp1), we get 'wrong # of pixels' errors on sp1 (4256 instead of 2128), and noticed that the monitor was showing a very fast apparent readout rate and shows red rows on the screen. This occurred on both sp1 and sp2. When we set 'activeInstruments sp1 sp2' and read _both_ cameras, the apparent readout rate returned to normal and the wrong pixel count errors went away. This may be just a curiousity, so no PR was filed. Weather (monsoon type) kept use closed until 22:30, when we opened under thinning cloud. We had a number of 'correction too large' errors on azimuth starting at 19:19:03 in murmur, with corrections increasing from 1848 ticks to 4562 ticks at 20:14:37. Why do these messages get repeated many times in murmur log? Are they separate events or single events reported many times? Plate 628, cartridge 9: 4 exposures (last aborted), (S/N)^2 >=10.1, not done. Cartridge loaded with 1100lb force. Offsets cleared. The first gotofield -gflat produced an error 'Jun 22 22:42:21 sdsshost IOP 303950 TEXTONLY Star 3 won't fit in an 450*450 region, scaled 150', which means we had to switch to a startMon -simple (see PR1578, which we re-opened). We also did not find guide stars or an fk5 on the first move. The -simple monitor meant we did not have RA/Dec directions available from the monitor, but some lucky stabs in the dark found the fk5 star. SoS warned that "Exposure number in header disagrees w/filename", for several exposures (as a result of the aborted exposures during preflight?). We fixed with the folklored procedure, and not the discrepancies in the imaging data log below. We got an "azimuth (Invalid barcode in azimuth: fididx = 12288, pos = 1098948532 (Jun 22 22:56:40): Jun 22 22:56:52 MDT )" error. During one science exposure, the guider stopped and the error 'Jun 22 23:44:25 sdsshost IOP 303950 TEXTONLY expected floating-point number but got "NaN"' appeared in murmurGUI, although we're not sure what from. startGuider restarted ok. The traceback fro, the failure is listed under Problem #1 below. We lost guide stars in thickening cloud around 00:55 and saw rapidly approaching precipitation on radar, so we endStare'd the exposure and closed. Rain actually resumed at 02:40 and continued intermittently the rest of the night. SoS recommended post-cals for the last (short) exposure, which got (S/N)^2 > 2.0 on only 2 cameras, so whoever finishes this plate should discount that exposure in the current S/N, and aim to add at least (S/N)^2 = 3.5 on all cameras to declare the plate done. We did not open again. endNight completed successfully.
