Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 05:26:48 -0600 From: Dan Long Subject: 2.5m obslog 20010618 (MJD 52079) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday June 18, 2001 (MJD 52079) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Dan Long (APO) Atsuko Kleinman (APO) Scot Kleinman (APO) PT SUPPORT: ======== VISITORS: ========= THE PLAN: ========= Science. SYNOPSIS: ========= Four plates declared done ( 604, 612, 631, 633 ) despite bouts of clouds. Dust counts hovered around the limit for much of the night. The optics may need to be CO2-snowed. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== The mcp was found to be "unavailable" during the afternoon checkout. Logging into the mcp directly yielded no prompt. It was rebooted and worked after that. Also during the afternoon checkout it was found that the Az fidicual at 121 consistently reads about 450 counts different in one direction than the other. This did not used to be the case, and its magnitude of more than 6 arcseconds will affect pointing adversely. It is not known at this point if other azimuth fiducials suffer the same problem or it is unique to this one. If this is found to be the case again tomorrow during the afternoon check a PR will be filed. The first murmurGui started this evening tracked telescope status. A second one started later did not. Can there only be one running at a time? We managed to get stars down fibers right away on cartridge 6 tonight by using last night's offsets as a starting point. Only needed one exposure to finish off the plate. We effectively lost about half an hour to clouds as two science exposures on plate 633 didn't meet the minimum requirement for S/N. Tonight, as was done on May 27 ( 52057 ), I calculated the RA Dec errors for the plates we did tonight. Like before, there appears to be a systematic time error in the pointing, and averages a suspicious 15 arcseconds in RA, or one second in time. See the log of May 27 for details on how the calculations were done ( I think I'm doing this right, modulo sign of the error ).
