SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== MCP hang. A building interlock kvetch. Two spectro exposures on plate 612 before we had to close for dust. Three exposures for plate 371, but not declared done. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== During the afternoon, Connie revised her tcl code for the AB standards test. I append her notes here, should we get another photometric night. I've also forwarded her email to the observing staff. the new code is in ~rockosi/square/square.tcl it is still called squarePhot it now takes three arguments. the previous two, linetime and number of lines to skip, and then the third is at your suggestion--you can optionally tell it how many frames to do this for by saying -nframes N. the default is 20, a little more than you need even with the bigger offset. Partly cloudy at sunset. We opened to do spectroscopy and got bitten by the new building interlocks. We started a telescope slew before the building had stopped moving. A phone call to Jon set us on the interlocks track. We are not happy that if you trip the building motion interlock even when the building is well away from the telescope, you have to lower the telescope to 6 degrees to clear the interlock. We are also not happy that you have to wait to slew until the building has come to a complete stop. It is safe to slew before the building is at its full range of travel, and it wastes a couple of minutes. We feel the interlock should be position dependent, not motion dependent. Cartridge 6 was mounted. We went to the field at about 21:30, found no stars, acquired an fk5, went back to our field. Still no stars. Did a spiralPattern. Found a guide star > 10 asec away from the fiber center, adjusted the alt/az offset and acquired all our guide stars. Why didn't the fk5 offsets get us closer? Are the fk5 coordinates off? High proper motion? As soon as we started the focus sweep, the MCP hung. This occurred at about 992751526 (getclock). The notes are in the problems section. After 2 15-min exposures, the dust went to the closing limit. We closed at 23:30. We reopened at 03:30 with cartridge 3, plate 371. We pushed this plate into twilight, to get three exposures, but couldn't declare it done. Both blue cameras complained about the sky brightness on exposure 3.
