SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== 22:10 Doors open, fans on 22:20 Enclosure off 23:20 Enclosure on, doors closed; WIND 00:40 Enclosure off 03:00 Enclosure on, doors closed, fans off; DUST Night lost to wind, dust and problems with the flat field screens. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== In the afternoon JEG and Mike Carr repaired the umbilicus and made modifications to help prevent the umbilicus from being crushed by the cart. It is now official - the telscope is held together with both duct tape and baling wire. Skies were clear but high wind and dust kept us closed until shortly after 22:00. With the skies being photometric, we started out with imaging. However, the wind forced us to close again around 23:00 because it was lifting one of the flat field screens (the 3 o'clock petal) off its "closed" sensor causing it to be in an indeterminate state. It is unclear whether this actually caused the petal to close but when we noticed the indeterminate state, we attempted to fix the problem by closing the screens and then re-opening them. At this point, the screens opened briefly and then all closed, presumably because one petal was still in an indeterminate state. We tried closing and opening them all several times but the screens would not stay open. The wind speeds at this time were 25-35 mph. Two previous PRs (2387, 2388) have already been filed on this problem which last occurred on 52057. Had we not closed for this problem, we would have had to close soon anyway as wind gusts were up to 36 mph. After discovering the problem with the flat field screens we attempted to end the drift. However, we could not connect to the camera to do so: Jun 13 23:14:11: process 652741 (IOP) running on sdsshost: im: FAILURE on ftelnet t-g-sdss-2.apo.nmsu.edu 3800: connection error in ftelnet: connection refused A grabInstruments issued in iop (not sop) is believed to be the cause of this problem. We logged out the port and were then able to connect to the camera. During this imaging attempt we had two problems with startFocusLoop -pause. The first problem was that startFocusLoop -pause didn't pause; the focus loop was still actively changing the focus. The second problem was that setFocusNkeep 200 failed after startFocusLoop -pause was issued. The current imaging procedures document says this should work. Details of both these problems can be found in the PROBLEMS section below. A PR was filed. The wind dropped and we opened again around 00:40 but we again encountered the problem with the flat field screens all closing because one petal was being affected by the wind. This time we used the manual override control box to force the flat field screens open. We attempted to run in this mode but found that we could not move the telescope. We tried to ignore this interlock using the mcp ignore interlock screen but got into a bit of a mess and had to call RHL (sorry Robert) who backed us out of it. We then attempted to bypass this interlock using the panel in the lower enclosure but could not find a switch that corresponded to it. Is it possible to override this and run the telescope with the flat field manual override control box engaged? After disconnecting the flat field manual override box, the screens stayed open and we again tried to do some imaging. At this point, clouds appeared. We decided to switch to spectroscopy. Immediately after completely the instrument change, the dust rose above 3000 counts and we closed again. Also, we got what seemed to be a lot of empty gang messages from the watcher for the ad1-4 drives. ANK helped us by looking through the murmur log and the relevant messages she found are included below in the PROBLEMS section. The test version of iop (v3_50_3) was declared current. Finally, the fan on the laptop at the telescope (briegel) is failing. A critical PR was filed (2442).
