SYNOPSIS: ========= Early in the evening, we discover that the version of watcher declared current (v2_9_0) is not compatible with the version of IOP declared current (v3_45_8), but is with the version of IOP now declared test (v3_50_3). Weather (first rain, then dust) keep us closed until 2:30. We attempt spectroscopy, but are unable to obtain guidestars, and eventually trace the problem to the outer end of the brass roller end piece for the north kinematic mount being very loose, almost ready to fall off. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== As we were beginning the night, the interlocks display started from the MCP (running on host) failed when displayed on briegel.apo.nmsu.edu, but seemed to work fine when run (again on host) when displayed on the xterminals in the control room. With help from Craig Loomis, we tracked this down to a setup conflict. When logging in to host from briegel, the current IOP and watcher are setup automatically, in that order. Last shakeup, the then new watcher v2_9_0 was found to work and declared current, but the IOP then in testing had problems and was not. (The lastest IOP, v3_50_3, now declared test, works well for spectroscopy, and we have been using it for such, but it is still untested for imaging, and so has not been declared current.) After some testing, we determined that the MCP interlocks display works fine with the combination watcher v2_8_17 and IOP v3_45_8, and also the combination watcher v2_9_0 and IOP v3_50_3, but fails with the combination of watcher v2_9_0 and IOP v3_45_8. We were successful in running interlocks from the MCP from the xterminal because we were setting up the products we needed by hand, and never stumbled across the unfortunate combination. There are two possible solutions to the problem: test to ensure that new watchers are compatible with current IOP's before they are declared current, or simply drop the automatic setup of watcher on briegel entirely. When IOP is setup, a compatible watcher will get setup there as long as a different one is not subsequently setup explicitly; the explicit setup of watcher on briegel is both dangerous and unnecessary. At 20:33:07 (during the doghouse bias), we get a id2 wrong number of pixels complaint. See the problems section for the relevant lines of the murmur log. When the rain finally stops and the clouds clear, the dust is too high for us to open. By the time the dust drops, we decide that we no longer have time to change to the imager and do the requested tests. Therefore, we go to spectroscopy, switching to cartridge 8, plate 633. We get not stars in the fibers at the field, and no fk5 either, although we do see signs of a star in fiber 2 when trying to center the fk5 in fiber 10. We resort to a spiral pattern, which picks up signs of the fk5 over 40" away. After centering on it, we still cannot get the guide stars at the field into the fibers. Guessing there is a considerably rotator component that our centering on the fk5 star could not find, we search for the stars using rotator offsets. We still cannot get any stars in the fibers. We give up on cartridge 8, and go on to cartridge 2. When changing the cartridge, we examine the mountings carefully. We find that the outer end of the brass roller end piece for the north kinematic mount was very loose, almost ready to fall off. We do not load the next cartidge, but put the counter weights all the way down. After verifying with French that it would be at least approximately in balance, we bring the telescope down to 6 degrees and close the telescope for the night. We note that when the counter weights are all the way down and only the corrector lens is on, the telescope is nearly balanced.
