SYNOPSIS: ========= Variable high clouds and a flat field screen problem held us to getting only two plates done tonight ( 590, 626 ). GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== The south side building pin could not be removed this evening until we ran the building west a tiny bit. It went in at the end of last night with no problem, and I don't think the building was moved during the day At sunset we opened the enclosure, closed it, and opened it again in rapid succession ( in support of the NHK film crew, to allow them a couple angles on the opening of the enclosure ). The building motion controller registered OH ( overheated ) and stopped moving right near the end of the second opening. It took about half an hour before it would reset. 22:25 - 23:05 lost time due to flat field screen flakiness. Plate 597 was leaving the observable range about the time we got going again. It started with the 3:00 panel registering an intermediate position. It wasn't all the way open. When a science exposure was issued, a command to open the flat field screens was also issued. Apparently since a panel was in an intermediate state, it decided to close. SOP complained about the closing, but continued with the exposure anyway. Once closed, we tried reopening them. This time it opened for a minute or so, then closed again. After checking both the petal open and closed switches and verifying that they would send the proper state of the screen we pressed, we noticed that the power was off to the screens. Apparently the power is removed from the motors once a move of the screens is complete. This can cause trouble if one of the petals is later moved off the switch ( by a wind gust or gravity ). We tried another open command, and this time the screens opened completely. This brings a few issues to mind. 1) When you go below 20 degrees in altitude the telescope will often halt due to one of the closed switches not being depressed. Why is the altitude for this interlock 20 degrees? The telescope can go all the way down to 6 degrees without the bottom flatfield screen hitting the floor ( it has about 3 inches to spare ). If we change the interlocks to something just shy of 6 degrees, we should be able to do our normal operations without ever having altitude trips due to a petal not being closed. See PR 2.5m-telescope/2386. 2) The flat field screens try to close if they can't successfully open. Why does the screen try to close if it can't reach the open state? If the motors were shut off after 30 seconds of trying to open, why not leave them there? If the reason had something to do with issue (1) can we eliminate (2)? See PR 2.5m-telescope/2387. 3) The flat field screens no longer try to maintain their state. The motors used to come on and attempt to close whichever switch of the state they were in, if that switch became open. That is if the screens were open, and you pulled a petal away from the open switch, the motor for that petal would come on and push the petal back open. This is no longer true. A moderate wind can now change the state of the screens. If this is to be the implementation of the system, the interlock reliance on these switches needs to be reduced, and the reaction to an intermediate state needs to be handled more carefully. See PR 2.5m-telescope/2388. SOP didn't handle this flat field screen episode well. It did complain that the screens were not open. It waited some time, then with the screens still closed, proceeded with the science exposure. See PR sop/2389 Failed to open Flat Field Screen Issuing goStare science with 1200 exposure Cartridge 9, plate 590 has fiber 2 so close to the edge, that when startMon tries to display it, it ends up outside the 450x450 display region. This causes the monitor to hang. The work around is to use startMon -simple. The normal version of startMon needs to have its code modified so that no part of the fiber postage stamp can lie outside the display region. I think this is another manifestation of PR 1601. It has been reassigned ( was needstest ). Tonight as part of the ongoing effort to track down the pointing problems doing spectroscopy, more offset information was gathered. Part of the addition was to compare the RA and Dec of the plate to the RA and Dec of the telescope when centered up on the guide stars. It showed a very interesting systematic error; the telescope was off by about one second of time on most plates, and in the same direction. Could there be a disagreement between the MCP and the TCC about which second they are syncing on? It is possible I don't have the sign right on the correction, and also possible there is something wrong with how I am using the TCC convert command, so here is how I arrived at the numbers. I start by taking the plate coordinates and converting them to observed coordinates at the current sidereal time. Once the calibration offsets are known, I add those values to the observed coordinates from the first conversion, and convert back to fk5, using the same sidereal time for the observed coordinates. As an example, here are the commands issued to obtain the data for cartridge 8. plate RA and Dec are 173.2454,64.445 convert 173.2454,64.445 fk5 obs=195 this gave observed coords of 196.4374, 55.6318 the calibration offsets were .0036, -.0004 Adding those offsets gives 196.4410, 55.6314 converting those back to fk5 convert 196.4410, 55.6314 obs=195 fk5 this gives adjusted fk5 coordinates of 173.2410, 64.4442 The difference between the telescope RA,Dec and plate RA,Dec is -15.8" and -2.9" DATA ACQUISITION : ================== IMAGING: -------- Run Stripe Strip Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame # Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2340 100 O ignore -56.06 -50.04 50 doghouse bias Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rotator --------------------------------------------------------------- SPECTROSCOPY: ------------- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ------ sequence 10104, plate 597 ------- 23:11 10104 0.0 bias {{}} ------ sequence 10105, plate -9999 ------- 00:32 10105 0.0 bias {{}} ------ sequence 10106, plate 597 ------- 9.1 9.1 7.7 5.9 03:26 10106 10.0 flat pre-flat 03:28 10107 2.0 arc pre-arc 03:54 10108 1201.0 target science 04:17 10109 1200.0 target science ------ sequence 10110, plate 590 ------- 18.6 15.4 16.3 16.7 05:33 10110 10.0 flat science pre-flat 05:35 10111 2.0 arc pre-arc 06:00 10112 1200.0 target science 06:23 10113 1201.0 target science 06:45 10114 1200.0 target science 06:52 10115 240.0 smear {{Smear Pattern}} ------ sequence 10116, plate 626 ------- 15.9 17.7 17.5 17.0 07:17 10116 10.0 flat pre-flat 07:19 10117 2.0 arc pre-arc 07:44 10118 1200.0 target science 08:02 10119 901.0 target science 08:24 10120 955.0 target science 08:34 10121 10.0 flat post-flat 08:36 10122 2.0 arc post-arc 09:05 10123 240.0 smear {{Smear Pattern}} ------ sequence 10124, plate 632 ------- 6.2 4.0 5.1 5.2 09:30 10124 10.0 flat science pre-flat 09:32 10125 2.0 arc pre-arc 10:19 10126 1200.0 target science 10:26 10127 240.0 smear {{Smear Pattern}} Plate 597 was observed in sequence(s) 10104 10106 for a total of 2401 seconds Plate 590 was observed in sequence(s) 10110 for a total of 3601 seconds Plate 626 was observed in sequence(s) 10116 for a total of 3056 seconds Plate 632 was observed in sequence(s) 10124 for a total of 1200 seconds Inst ID 1 reading Disconnected for cartridge 8.
