THE PLAN: ========= Science. Imaging if possible. Otherwise spectroscopy. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== 18:00 Doors open, fans on 21:00 Enclosure off 04:45 Enclosure on, doors closed, fans off Two plates declared done (584, 618). Good data taken for plate 515 but not declared done. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== During afternoon checkout we discovered the hose for the PMSS venturi pressure was loose and leaking air. The problem was fixed by putting a hose clamp on the hose. Mostly cloudy at sunset but starting to break up. The clouds delayed opening until an hour after sunset. At approximately 22:10, we noticed that the TPM was not updating mirror temperature and encoder detail screens. The error message on the temperature screen said "not connected". After about 30 minutes it appeared to be updating correctly again. The problem reoccurred at around 03:15. Good data was taken for cartridge 4 plate 515. However, the S/N for r2 was too low to declare the plate done. Cartridge 5 plate 584 was declared done after 3 exposures (2700 sec). We had problems finding guide stars for cartridge 6 plate 611. No guide stars after gotoField; no guide stars after fk5; no guide stars after a spiral search. We also tried to go to a nearby bright star (2nd mag). At this point we noticed a problem with the flat field screens. Petal 3 seemed to be stuck and was causing the other petals to close. This occurred because the 2nd mag star took the telescope too close to the railing. The telescope was moved to stow and the flat field screens were opened. They closed again automatically. We opened them again and they remained open. We did another gotoField, another fk5 and another spiral search while visually confirming the flat field screens remained open. No guide stars were found and we switched cartridges. Cartridge 1 plate 618 was declared done after 6 exposures (5400 sec) even though the S/N for b1 was only 12.8. Two of these 6 exposures had S/N < 2 for b1 and so are not included in the final S/N (although one of these had S/N = 1.9 and may be usable). Also, a "whopping fiber" in b1 may have had an adverse effect on the S/N. Thus, we believe that b1 actually has sufficient S/N to declare it done. If the final reductions show otherwise, please inform us and we will get more data for this plate. We attempted to get information on the plate offset coordinates but made several mistakes as this was our first attempt at doing this. The info we did get are included below the offsets. There was some question as to the best method of obtaining the initial coords. Are coords from the plate data base acceptable? If not, can we report the positions with sticky offsets included (as long as we note what the sticky offsets are) or do we have to clear our offsets before reporting the coords? Note that clearing the offsets every time detracts from our efficiency. We also checked the instrument IDs as reported by the TPM and watcher. The results are listed below the plate offset coords. The IDs are not always correct. A PR (2362) was filed.
